Newton Systems Group Preparing New Products

[EXCLUSIVE] Even amidst turmoil in the ranks, the Newton Systems
Group at Apple is far from dead, despite hints to the contrary. Current
indications suggest Apple will indeed kill the MessagePad line off
within
the next few months, or position it solely as a niche product for
special
customers, such as telecom firms.

However, eMate development is going ahead at full steam, and the eMates
will not be similar to today's
design. In fact, several eMates, of varying design, are being developed
currently. Some are smaller than the current eMate, resembling a large
palmtop with traditional Apple curves. Others could be just as varied.

We've also heard of a large slab-like version as well. In addition,
color is
expected to be big part of future Newton development, with extensive
support to be found in Newton OS 3.0. New eMates should ship with
color TFT screens, as we've reported in the past most future eMates will
indeed be based over on the amazing Digital SA-1100 processor,
eliminating the need for several Newton-specific ASICs. Details at this
point are sketchy, but we hope to have more of the interface-changes in
Newton OS 3.0 and more on the new form factors soon.

Rant On:

If Jobs has anything to say about it (and of course the jerk does),
obviously NO.

He wants to cut off anything of value from Apple (I wonder how much
Microsoft is paying him?)

Anyone for an alt.steve.jobs.die.die.die newsgroup?

I know one thing. I will never buy another Apple product as long as I
live. (And as a senior systems consultant, have more than a little
influence in what clients purchase. I can only recommend something I
can trust, and Apple is the most untrustworthy company I've ever seen).

Rant Off:

The message-pad is the most advanced palmtop/notes/organizer/fax/etc...
on the planet. The ability to search for multiple keywords is crucial.
Nothing else on the planet has this ability.

The message-pad is such a critical part of day-to-day existance, I am
waiting until the MP21h is available, purchadsing one, then upgrading my
MP2K. If it is discontinued, I want 2. (Besides, I'd go into Newton
Withdrawl if I had to wait a week for the upgrade ;-)

I've been a message-pad user since the day it came out (I was on the
waiting list for arrival in the store). To me, it is absolutely
irreplacable. (I have over 800 Names & 2400 Notes).

I have folders for supporting 9 Operating Systems, 8 computer languages,
6 different sites I was at as a senior systems consultant (for
performance review/resume update purposes), all of my personal
computers/Sparc/HP equipment for my business, and of course Flying,
Skydiving, Racing, Bicycling, Kayaking, and anything else I feel like
trying for a while.

It's really too bad such an incredible device has been Jobs'ed to
extinction.

Hoping for a breath of sanity from Apple, but come on, its Apple ;-)

P.S. Sorry about the rant, but I've never felt so betrayed by something
I've defended tooth-and-nail before. I don't know how many sales I've
ended up generating, but it feels like I've steered them wrong as well.
I can never forgive Jobs for forcing me into this position.

You are right I heard from a good source that I can't reveal that Gates
IS paying Jobs to take care of Apple once and for all. They met and

Absurd.
Don't you understand that if Apple goes under that Janet Reno can eat Gates for
dinner? Gates needs the Apple operating system to be for sale and available to
the public in order to fend off monopoly charges. Gates needs Apple much more
than Apple needs Gates.

This is bullshit and you should know better. Gates has not killed anyone
in his life. The businesses that went belly-up in the past (Wordperfect,
etc) shot themselves in the foot, Gates had nothing to do with it, he was
too busy developing new stuff. I am not a great fan of Microsoft products,
I use a Mac, I use Windows NT, I develop for Newtons, but the fact is that
Microsoft knows how to market stuff while Apple simply is inept. I
certainly hope Newton is not going to die, it is far superior to Windows
CE. In fact I hope Apple will license the OS to all the makers of
smartphones, smart cars, smart watches, smart ovens, etc. But of course I
don't know if anyone at Apple is listening.

You made me laugh so hard Pepsi fizzed up into my nose! Gates hasn't
developed anything since BASIC for the Altair, and even on that I bet his
'friends' did most of the work!

(from the descriptions of when they were working on that program Gates
sounds like the worst kind of programmer you would want around... printing
up all the source code and laying on or under the table while reading it...
it screams 'unstable' and there's far too much of those kinds in this field
;-)

You know I have to admit you have a point. I worked for Borland in
the first half of the 90's and Phillipe Kahn was so focused on (a)
doing Lotus in and (b) trying to overtake Microsoft in software sales
because he was able to do so with Ashton Tate that he ended up
second-guessing himself constantly and did the company in. While
Borland is truly poised for a very nice comeback with Java tools, etc.
this did *not* need to happen the way it did. Borland could have
continued to thrive and do well without trying to take on MS..
Wordperfect just got stupid... I mean WP 5.1 for Windows SUCKED. It
wasn't until version 7 that the product got truly livable again.

True, but I think what our friend meant was "Gates' company" not gates
himself... Just like the only thing Borland ever developed was Turbo
Pascal.. Everything else they sold someone else wrote and they either
bought the program or the company that made it.

Gates' "instability" is really starting to show more... For example,
his comments in interviews, etc. If you really read some of the
recent stuff on C!Net he's starting to sound a bit.. well.. detached
from reality.. OK ok.. MORE detached from reality.. than usual.

Haven't Apple already been pipped at the post by Psion licencing
EPOC32?

Answer me this, would YOU buy an Apple license after the Mac Clone
fiasco?

Harry.

Judging from their having licensed the message pads from day one,
I don't believe that the issues are comparable.

While I like Psion (and love the UK) you're showing your UK bias. Psion is
worthy competition to Newton but at this point they hardly matter on a
world-wide scale. Newton has been in the licensing game for some time
already and hopefully will continue to be. A much bigger threat is Windows
CE which could kill both the Psion series 5 and Newton (superior products
though they may be).
