MacUpdate says that LibreOffice 4.1.0.4 requires

Intel, OS X 10.4.7 or later.

LibreOffice, which automatically opens a web page pertinent to your
particular Mac, says

"
Selected: LibreOffice Mac OS X (PPC), version 4.1.0, English (US)

No regular installation files are available.
Please change your selection or pick one from the additional downloads
below.
"

Is this Newspeak for "We have decided to drop updates for PowerPC"?

The only downloads available seem to be the older versions which I
already have.

Michael Vilain: Yes, they stopped support for PPC a while back.

My Reply: Version 4.0.1.2 was released in March of this year, 4.0.2.2
in April, 4.0.3.3 in May, and 4.0.4.2 in June. All of these included
the PowerPC. "Stopped... a while back" hardly seems accurate.

Lewis: As did nearly everyone on the planet.

My Reply: Dear Mr. Krispy, GFY and then ESAD. Fortunately, MacUpdate
knows that you are full of shit.

I'm currently working on OSX SDK10.5 and gcc-4.2 portability.

Patches would be on http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/manulix/other/libreoffice/ and also sent to LO's mail list.

See also: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/OSX-PowerPC-Dropping-support-why-td4068941.html

I hope we, the Community, will have LibreOffice 4.2 for OSX@PowerPC as upstream build.

Doug, you are doing a great service to the community. You are also
helping to prevent some machines from going to the landfill yet.

Any chance you can do an update when 4.2 becomes stable & same for 4.3?

Thanks again,

Current goal is to achieve OS X 10.5 support with upstream (i.e. The Document Foundation). Of course, I can build and upload 4.2 release, when it comes out. 4.2 branch is "frozen" now (no new things, only fixes), so current work is going on 4.3. And I hope 4.3 would be 100% PowerPC compatible. The hardest thing now is Firebird's storage, see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72987

Hmm... there is a whole community out there using Tenfour{fox|bird}. All
of them should be interested in LO 4.2 and 4.3 etc. for Leo (the Tenfour
programs run very well under 10.5).. Even though many of us run Tiger;
as far as I am concerned if Leo has significantly better software
support why not "upgrade"? For me, certainly LO 4.2 and 4.3 will be an
incentive to get my last Tiger hold-out to Leo (which it'll do just
fine, most of my PPC machines already run 10.5).

Thanks again for doing this,

10.4fox browser guy is not interested in office productivity suite. Or... Oh, I didn't contact him.

And the question is not 10.4 vs 10.5. I'm sure 10.4 and 10.5 can use Qt toolkit or at least Gtk+ in X11 mode.

I dunno, sorry. Apache/Oracle ones will definitely *not* work with LO. Where is that language pack you took from?

Meanwhile, current master (and future 4.3) is ready.

I'm very "glad" to see no error reporting. But we, as my own tests shown, have no JPEG embedding (thus a lot of presentations are now without images), no outline font effect. And using unknown font (as "Calibra") in M$ Word OOXML crashes LO.
So... Nobody still really uses LO on PowerPC, except me?

People who hang out in these groups (myself included) are Apple Mac fans
and users to some degree or other. While some may be clinging to a
faithful PPC Mac here or there they also likely have an intel Mac too.

Then of course there is the general paucity of LO users regardless of OS.

The transition was announced in 2005 and the first intel Macs shipped in
2006.

So, yes, us nobody's here really do not use LO - or so it seems.

I planned to update my Intel Mac's LO at the same time as PPC but

Here you are:
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/manulix/other/libreoffice/LibreOfficeDev_4.3.0.0.beta2_20140615_MacOS_PPC.dmg

After this, I'll be with master branch (currently called 4.4.0alpha0), because:
1) there're no patches for beta and stable releases which are not in master too (it can only go one way: master --> other branches);
2) stable at date T is the same as master at date T-1, but without new features;
3) it's much harder to commit to beta and stable than for master.

All the best from Douglas!

Sad news: LibreOffice team goes to drop 10.6 and 10.7 support since 4.4 ( https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/index.php?title=ReleaseNotes%2F4.4&diff=99539&oldid=98768 ). The reason for this is "not enough OpenGL support".

What's the point of dropping even more userbase due to OpenGL support?

I made patch ``don't force OpenGL requirement as "must have"'' ( https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/11101/ ), but team is against it.

My patches are not accepted by upstream anymore. This will render my work to be very hard (if possible at all).

If there's still any demand for LibreOffice @ OSX 10.5-10.7, can you please raise some attention to it.

<@moggi> nobody cares about your ppc builds
< dougmencken> moggi: leave marketing team with TDF builds, but leave an option for others

No, 10.6 and 10.7 are Intel... I think that most of us that have LO on
our machines have it to open legacy files from WP and early MSO.
Existing builds will continue serve that purpose.
It's time to thank those who might have made special patches for those
legacy systems and let go on with their lives instead of banging their
heads into a wall...

Err... Thanks to Doug and his friends, BTW...

Actually, it's time to ask for demand.
Well, I can build just for myself. (Currently I'm using "Built by Douglas Mencken for PowerPC (2014-08-25, master:552f139)" version personally, not upladed anywhere.)

Do **you** need a newer build of LibreOffice for PowerPC @OSX?

I don't exactly *need* it - as the last public version for PPC OS X works well for the couple of things I need it for.
So for me it would be nice seeing a stable release one or two times per year - for example the last bugfix release of every even version (4.0.4, then 4.2.6, then 4.4.?). You could determine your release cycle like you wish - and your time permits.

I myself am maintaining WebKit for (Snow) Leopard as a hobby project (I like it because it's simply better integrated with the OS than TenFourFox, and faster therfore - even without JavaScript JIT) - mostly for myself and I'm sharing my achievements online.

Currently, I made 16 commits to my dedicated branch (which follows master):

http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/manulix/other/libreoffice/pictures/ports-macosx10.5-master--summary--02nov2014.png

You can see it yourself here:

https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/gitweb?p=core.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/ports/macosx10.5/master

The question now is compiler. There's no matching compiler with C+11 support for Darwin-dyld now.

GCC does "internal compiler error": https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=61759 (and fresh 4.9.2 is just unbuildable: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=63703)
LLVM doesn't "support for PowerPC in RuntimeDyldMachO.cpp" yet, so clang can't generate powerpc code for darwin: http://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=16885

Another choice is to use Apple-patched gcc-4.2 for objcxx (.mm) stuff, it's not C+11 addicted now. Or to go "free" GNUstep way. Or to go X11 way. I suppose, I will try as many options as I can.

I almost forgot... If you met any problem like it doesn't launch first try to patch with http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/manulix/other/libreoffice/LibreOfficeDev%20Patcher.app.zip
On my side, patched version works well even on just-installed Leopard http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/manulix/other/libreoffice/pictures/lo-5.1tenfive20151001patched-on_fresh_leopard.png

If it continues to refuse to work, try to launch via Terminal : drop LibreOfficeDev(.app) to Terminal window and add /Contents/MacOS/soffice ~-
/Applications/LibreOfficeDev.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice
and look for errors in output ( but ignore "autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking" and "ATSFontFindFromContainer failed" )

Any feedback is very appreciated

Hi Doug,

I just wanted to add to this thread, many thanks for your work on this. I'm using your 5.1 snapshot build and it works quite well (post-patching), on a 1.67GHz AlBook. A little slow, but that's the nature of a 10 year old laptop in the modern era.

I'm really glad somebody is taking the time to maintain this.
