I have just been given a System 9.1 Mac G3 (Beige), and it will
replace my ancient System 8.1 Quadra 840AV. I only have an internet
connection via an old wireless PC laptop.
I would like to download the following files:
Mac_OS_9.1_Update.smi.bin
Mac_OS_9.2.1_Update.smi.bin
Mac_OS_9.2.2_Update.smi.bin
Transfer them to the G3 and update. I think I need Stuffit Expander
and Disk Copy to use these files once transferred to the G3. Could
someone advise me what versions I would need. The Stuffit site only
lists versions for 9.2.1 and up.
Lastly, since it's been well over 10 years since I used a Mac, please
refresh my mind as to how to handle .hqx (binhex?) files on System
9.1.
Man, I feel like a newb again, lol! Can anyone recommend a site that
would hold my hand from downloading to a PC through copying to the
Mac, then installing? Many Thanks!!!!
In theory all you should need is Stuffit Expander, but an older
version like version 5, 6 or early version 7's that would work on
OS8-9 machines. Havinga copy of DiskCopy would not hurt.
Assuming the Quadra has ethernet capabilities (built in or added) you
can or should be able to transfer files using a cross-talk ethernet
cable. Othertwise you will need to burn to CD or temporarily transfer
the files to a second medium, such as FTP space, or use a file
transfer service such as "SendThisFile.com" or "YouSendIt.com" to
upload to their servers then send yourself a download link via e-mail
for the other machine.
HQX files are zipped file sthat have been encoded further for transfer
across internet boundaries. Stuffit Expander should be able to decode
the HQX down to a BIN or SIT file and should then automatically (if
set to) further decode from there into a usable file.
An SMI file is essentially a disk image. You shoyld be able to click
the SMI to validate it, and open it on the desk top and drag the files
anywhere to use them right away.
Thanks a lot! Dumb me, lol. I found a copy of Stuffit Expander already
installed on the G3. So all is good so far, except for a strange
looping error message after decoding a downloaded .bin file. error
-137 I think it was. I had to pull the power cord to get out of it.
Now I have to make room to update the system, as the drive is rather
full.
