Where did you find it? I saw the WWW site where to get it, and I
clicked on it and it sent me back to another screen.. around in

Go and buy this month's Computer Gaming World Magazine (CGW)... a CD which
includes the Magic Carpet 2 Demo (5 levels).

Frankly, the original Magic Carpet stunned me--but this one totally floors
me! Night missions, even BETTER performance (at least in low-res),
more DETAILED objects close up, really LARGE on screen objects, fantastic new
enemies, MISSION GOALS!, and much more...

Only one problem... its still anoyingly impossible to go down into trenches
or holes in the ground. That @#$*& Carpet still can't point DOWNWARD!

It came on the cover disk for the last CGW. Its pretty neat, though I
liked the control in 1 better. The graphics are great though, but again
it runs too fast in low res and too slow in high res on my P100. If this
doesn't get fixed I think I'll pass on the game. Pity since I loved MC
until I upgraded. And I can't figureout how to make it play with the
joystick.

Try this. Switch to high res and then shrink the screen until the speed is
good. You will probably end up with about a 4/5 screen image, but a playable
game. I have even done this with my dx2, and while I can only use about 1/2
the screen, the graphics are great. It is sort of like playing with your head
in a box. Not that I ever actually put my head in a box, but you get the idea.

By the way, for those that don't have it, the demo is 26 Meg, so it is unlikely
to show up on an FTP site.

It is worth getting the magazine (CGW) just for the demo. Five levels and very
cool stuff.

I'm a bit behind the times on MC I guess, but how do you pick up mana in
MCI and MCII? I've just got both demos and I haven't been able to figure
this out.

Also, are the controls for the reg versions of both games the same? The
demos seem to use different mouse/kbrd controls.

Why do they advertize for the demo on their web page, and its not even
there for? I usually buy a few different mags, but, I've been sticking
to PCgamer of late. I guess I'll have to just get it to get the demo..
or I think I should be able to wait until they put it on their page.

I've been hearing good things about it, and if its faster, it will be
even more enjoyable.. however it was just fine before on my dx2-66!
Sounds like one I might go out any buy..

They won't. The reason? The demo is 26 megs. Even if yiou subtract the 15
meg intro sequence, 11 megs of already compressed data (so it won't ZIP
any smaller) is too much to have tens of thousands of people attempt to
transfer.

On MY 486-66 it rocks. (Carpet 2) I can't even imagine it on a Pentium 133!

Is that zipped, or unzipped? And don't forget the infamous 30mb Wing
Commander III demo, which I downloaded. Took 3 days. :)

11Mb?

15Mb Absolute Zero demo
7Mb Witchaven and Tekwar demos
10Mb Cybermage and SlipStream 5000 demos

I believe that many people will download it, as they have these (not
sure 'bout the AZero one).

Get the Sept. issue. It's worth the $5 just for the demo. I doubt
you'll see it on the WEB page - too big. I didn't think I would be interested
in MC2 after 50 levels of MC1, but this completely changed my mind. Game play
is great! New monsters, night missions, and some play improvements (like having
flying control in the map screen).

Also on the disk is the HiOctane demo. I didn't think I would be into this
either, but wow! Great action. Uses the MC engine for racing/shooting.

The demo will run off a hard drive. If you just replace the intro.dat
animation at the beginning with a null file, the resulting demo still
functions fine and is only 5.5MB zipped.

I will try to upload this tonight if no-one already has. I was annoyed
at having to buy a second newsstand copy of CGW just to see this.

In the September issue of CGW, or what? I have got the August issue,
but there is no CD included, and it hasn't been in any earlyer issue
either. (At least not in Sweden) I haven't got the September issue yet,
but I sure hope it contains that CD with Magic Carpet 2...

Actually it runs fine in high res mode on 100 MHz and 120 MHz systems.
IF you have a decent video card (e.g. Diamond Stealth Turbo 64, Matrox

The Magic Carpet 2 demo is at:
http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/msdos_uploads/game_demos/mc2demo.zip.

It's missing the 15MB introductory animation, but is otherwise complete,
and is approximately 5.8MB compressed. The full version of the demo
is on the newest CGW CD as well as the CD included with Strategy Games
Plus, apparently.

Yesterday I bought CGW (september issue) in the Netherlands, with the CD,
so it will also arrive in Sweden. Its worth buying, the Magic Carpet 2
demo is great!

I also have the MCII demo. I never played MCI, so I don't know all the
controls. One big question: how do I get mana? If you fly through it,
you don't automatically pick it up, so I assume I need to actually
do something to gather it. Any help would be appreciated, I can't
complete the first level of the demo without getting the mana.

Uhhmmm...ok, ya first hafta get ur castle big enough ta have
a baloon....this is how you gather mana not close to ur castle...
the baloon will go out and collect mana that you have cast the
possess spell upon...so cast the possess spell upon some mana
near your castle...to keep building up mana reserves...then, go
farther out...get more mana, possess it, balloon will come for
it....etc......also, i believe it's either the first or 2nd level of this
demo.....this spell is ALMOST A NECESSITY FOR YOU TO
GET!!!! the lightning spell is either on level 1 or 2....get it....
cuz if ya don't ya better hope ya can get your fireball to level
2 real quicklike...heh-heh....

Someone has posted the MC2 demo at "www.pht.com" and "ftp.cdrom.com". They left off
the intro so the file is about 5.7 meg as suggested by jmc.

Mana is picked up by balloons. The balloons automatically seek out any mana
which you have "marked" as under your control with those white bolts you fire
(initially with your right mouse button, I believe). Mana under your control
turns white in the single player version.

Here's the catch... you don't get balloons to pick up mana until you build a
castle to serve as a delivery point for the balloons. This can only be done
on a large stretch of flat land with that "castle" tool--which you don't get
until late in level 1 in MCII.

Other hints:
--use your rotate keys. if you adjust your forward/backward motion to zero,
and use either your left or right rotate keys, AND lean your body positioning
correctly (via the mouse), you can navigate quick circles around an enemy.
--don't shoot if you don't have a target. every type of weapon needs to
recharge--don't waste valuable energy.
--getting mana in trenches/pits. this is the single hardest part of the
game. frustrating, actually. if you stay still long enough you'll sink
into a pit--but sometimes that isn't an option. in MCI, with a joystick,
the task was easier, but in either game, with a mouse, you'll hard a hard
time. the best technique is to rock forwards and back quickly using the
accelerate and decelerate keys in sequence--using the mouse to point the
carpet downwards in the proper direction during the acceleration stage.

good luck.

Well, there is a smaller demo out there (w/o the intro)
it's about 5.8 megs zipped, 11megs unpacked.
Don't know where to get it, though, since I sucked it

You can find the smaller demo (sans intro-animation) at:

wuarchive.wustl.edu:/pub/msdos_uploads/game_demos

The files involved are mc2demo.txt and mc2demo.zip.

Hope this helps!
