Why? I haven't found anything that doesn't work with STM except Copy ][+.

Not only does it work, it works amazingly well. It's sound is complex
enough though, to make it the only Apple II program I have used on
STM so far that has a few clicks in the sound. The best thing about
running Karateka on STM, in my opinion, is running it at high speed.
It seems to average about 2.5Mhz on my Centris 650. Those little blue

Yeah, but my ZipGSX runs it at 7 Mhz ;-)
Heh, the emulator also includes the Autostart ROM and the DOS 3.3
System Master, both still copyrighted by Apple. Heck, Apple is _still_
licensing DOS 3.3! (eew! :-) I suppose if they licensed DOS 3.3, it'd
be OK to distribute, but I really have doubts about including the ROM.
The other emulators I've seen make you get the ROM from a real Apple II.
However, the thing does run pretty fast (Quadra 650). It claims to get
about 2.6MHz, although for some reason, it seems a bit slower than an
unaccellerated GS. Slow video, maybe... BTW:

Hmm, APPLEVISION clicks a lot when I run it at 1MHz, and if I don't
limit the speed, it skips a lot of notes. I do have an AppleShare file
server running in the background, but it's idle...
Yeah, well, it's only at v0.851...but seriously, whatever graphics mode
is in
effect at refresh time is considered to be in effect for the entire
screen.
I'm seriously considering recording mode change times by scan line, which
would give you basic screen-splitting capability, but the fractional-line
splits which this code uses are probably out of the question...

Hmm, I had a gut feeling that the shift-key mod involved tying the state
of the
shift key to button #3. I never verified this, but I went ahead and put
that
control in anyway. So if that is really how it was supposed to work, the
mod
is in already...

>Yeah, I smell real illegalities here, but I suspect that Nitchals and co have
>inadvertantly adopted the same attitude as Apple Inc about the A2: They Just
>Don't Care.
I've personally spent a great deal of time and money contacting authors
and acquiring rights to their Apple II programs in conjunction with a
future release of STM. In the meantime, STM is Kevin's property, and
the FTP site is his. I am not responsible for STM or its distribution,
nor for the arrangement of the FTP site. However, I can state with
confidence that the use of the software on cassandra is strictly for
testing compatibility wtih STM, a fair use if I ever heard one for
programs no longer being viably marketed or sold in any way.
In addition, I have already opened discussions with fellow employees
at Apple Computer to secure legal rights for Kevin to use the Apple II
ROM images. The System Disk images are available for $50/year each,
and next week I'll personally walk over to the licensing department
and plunk down $100 to cover the STM disk images for another year.
What Kevin has provided to the Apple II community already, and what
we plan to provide in commercial form, are and will be of great value.
In some cases, I have already succeeded in securing rights where the
author himself did not know how to proceed due to confusion about the
publisher's remaining rights. That's right: the authors themselves
did not know who had the publication rights to their own product.
In other cases, the author hadn't even realized that their agreement
had lapsed, and that they owned all the rights themselves. With
such widespread lack of interest in the Apple II programs they wrote,
I hope it'll be clear that our efforts are bringing those programs
back into availability, and without our efforts they would have died.
My name recognition among the old Apple II programming community
has helped, too. I've been more successful with the majority of
programmers who remembered me than with those who didn't, but they
were *all*, without exception, grateful for my efforts.
You accuse me of a "Just Don't Care" attitude. That hurts.
If you had a shred of concern for the interest of Apple Computer Inc.,
the Apple II community, or the countless authors who made the Apple II
great, you'd be discouraging the "Hey D00D, where's that FTP site
that has that cool copy of Karateka?!" messages, and encouraging our
efforts to test and debug STM.

Performance points on an LC III are useful information. I only have
a Mac II, a Mac IIfx, and an LCII to test with; Kevin uses a IIsi.
My expertise is in software optimization, and there have been substantial
improvements to the emulator that haven't shown up in public releases
yet.

Curious that this is what unfreezes Serpentine; I thought it was rather
unlikely that a key which the ][+ couldn't even recognize would have that
effect, but I have a glimmering now as to how it might be possible (though
still no clue why Serp. might freeze).

I've never been able to get "Karateka" to boot from my ROM 01 or
ROM 3, but I was successful when I tried it from a ROM 00 GS. I should point
out though, that the ROM 00 had an old Disk ][ drive connected via the a
20-pin controller card (not the Apple 5.25 through the GS's Smartport). In
fact I'm positive it's just a smartport incompatibility problem since the
very same copy of "Karateka" refused to load on my old Apple //c! Works just
fine on my Apple ][ and ][+ machines, though I think I'll go see what
happens running it from my Apple //e with DuoDisk (simular enough to the
Apple 5.25, though again I think it's the smartport on the //c and IIgs).
A couple of games dislike the smartport, "Drol" comes to mind...

Interesting, I picked up a boxed copy at a trade show for $2, and

there was more than one version (or more than one kind of copy protection).

There were something like 6 versions of the game. You never kow what
you'll get. Of course, the best thing about Karateka, like all ofhter II
software, is that it san be had for $2. I've gambled that away in 2
seconds in Atlantic City and have nothing to show for it. Spend $2
on Karateka and at least you get to keep the box. :)
No. I think something was wrong with his copy of Karateka (not the copy
protection either). I love that game and when I realized it would work on my
IIgs, I was so happy. I spent 5 minutes playing with mo problems at all on an
Apple IIc external drive.
Joel Schmidt, please address E-Mail as follows,

I have heard that it is only the cracked version of Karateka which has
a problem.
The problem is that on every disk access, Karateka takes a copy of the
ROM from the Disk II controller card and patches it. It then uses the
patched copy to do the disk I/O. The resulting code crashes on the
IIc and IIgs because the routines in the firmware are in a slightly
different location.
