I was always wondering how I could change the size and the color of the
mouse pointer for the CDE (new desktop). The normal pointer is really tiny
and after typing for a while I always have a hard time finding it. The old
pointer in DECW 1.2-3 was much bigger but i dont want to go back. The new
desktop looks much more high tech and all the WinNT developers are jealous
about my cool desktop ;-).
I searched the decw$system_deafults for an example with no luck. I assume
there is a paramter like sm.pointer.size or something like this. If anyone
could shed some light on it please.
Thanks,
-Jens.

Sorry Jens,
There's nothing short of you modifying the bitmap for the pointer. There
is no tool or window to modify the pointer attributes under CDE. I have
griped about this too. I constantly loose the small pointer -- even on a
21" monitor -- and have asked for a "pointer attributes" window.
The only positive aspect of this change is to take away the capability to
change the pointer shape to the outline of the "Starship Enterprise" -- a
common symptom of luserdom.

... and in the end, the money you take is equal to the money you make.
$ mc decw$utils:xsetroot -cursor_name sailboat
works only somewhat. My X window knowledge has gotten a bit too stale
to be able to figure out why. You can experiment with the other command
line options to customize the pointer a bit further. Specifying a
foreground and/or background color makes it much more visible, also.
You can look at DECW$INCLUDE:CURSORFONT.H to find some of the names
(including "trek", Brian). :-) Just leave off the "XC_". You can
specify an XBM file also.
When I tried this it only changes the pointer in the CDE workspace
(backdrop) windows. It didn't affect other windows (application
created). It might be because it didn't set the cursor for the real
root window. In the original DECwindows, the background window was
the root window. With CDE, the different workspace windows act like
a root window for the application windows. I have seen similar problems
with XV when trying to have it write to the root window.
It is interesting that if you do a:
$ mc decw$utils:xsetroot -default
you will get the original DECwindows pointer. I think that's because
it's the pointer that's compiled into the X server. It appears that
the CDE startup changes the pointer to the smaller one. If there is a
way to not have CDE do that, you might be able to get what you're
looking for.
"Live long and perspire!" This doesn't keep the pointer across session
incarnations though. You would have to run this procedure each time you
start your session.
I would be real nice to have the pointer setting ability that was provided
under the previous DECwindows.

I asked Digital and they told me the following:
- open a terminal window
- at the prompt type "MC decw$session"
- you will see a menu bar where you can select "Options" and then "Pointer".
Unfortunatley there is no proper way to leave this program, you'll have to
press CTRL-Y in the window from where you started the program. And the modified
pointer size and color affects the pointer only when it is on the background
of the desktop. In a terminal window or on some other window it is still small
and black. And after all you must ensure that the program decw$wsinit is run
during each login.

I have the following line in my DTWM.DAT file:
Dtwm*fontList: -*-Helvetica-Bold-R-Normal--*120-*-*-P-*-ISO8859-1
I'm pretty sure that's what gets me the bold font I like in my title bar.
(Use "Mwm" instead of "Dtwm" if you're not using CDE.)
