On an old pc, i have instaled freedos before Win98 for possible
maintenance, but when i load "install" on the cd setup of Win98, i have
a memory problem, i have got an alert witch tell me i don't have more than
16Mo of memory, however the pc have 385 Mo of active memory.
I load HIMEM.EXE and EMM386.EXE, and i dont know how to tell freedos move
extended memory to normal memory.
Sorry for my english.
Thank you for yours answers

I don't know what is causing the alert. Is that in MS-DOS or
when Win98/SE boots?

You shouldn't need EMM386.EXE for booting DOS or booting
Win98/SE. What happens without EMM386.EXE loaded?

First, my understanding is Win98/SE won't work with Freedos.

Second, you need Win98's HIMEM.SYS to install Win98, but if
you have more than 1GB of memory, you'll need to use
Japheth's HIMEMX.

http://www.japheth.de/Jemm.html

Win98/SE's memory is not capped by available XMS memory
from HIMEMX. Win98/SE is capped by MaxPhysPage and
MaxFileCache in system.ini. These work with HIMEM.SYS
for 4GB during Win98 install:

system.ini
[386enh]
MaxPhysPage=22000
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=560000

These work with after Win98\SE install with Japheth's
HIMEMX.SYS for 4GB:

system.ini
[386enh]
MaxPhysPage=3FFFF
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=524288

Japheth's HIMEMX.SYS can be switched for HIMEM.SYS
during Win98/SE's install *after* the first reboot.
Edit the setup's system.ini.

So dont install freedos. Win98 has a perfecly working dos7,
of a much better quality than freedos.
Its quality is about the same as dos6.22, the last M$ dos.
dos 7 and dos6.22 are just what you need, and when you download
and install FREE WATCOM, you can make 16 and 32 bit programs.
Google for:

aurez Windows. Sachant que vous ne pourrez jamais excuter
Windows 98 directement partir de FreeDOS.

Bonne chance
