9.3.18. Mjolner BETA System

Description:
The Mjolner BETA System is a software development environment
supporting object-oriented programming in the BETA programming
language. BETA is uniquely expressive and orthogonal amongst
object-oriented languages. BETA unifies just about every
abstraction mechanism, including class, procedure, function,
coroutine, process, and exception, into the ultimate abstraction
mechanism: the pattern. In addition it has general block
structure, strong typing, whole/part-objects, and concurrency.
Compiler: Native code generation, garbage collection, separate
compilation, C and assembler interface. System: Persistence,
distribution, comprehensive libraries, platform- independent GUI
application framework (Unix, Mac, Windows, NT), metaprogramming
system, graphical system, hyperstructure editor.

Among the unique characteristics of the Mjolner BETA System are
that the GUI-applications run on Motif, Windows NT and Macintosh
without any change and with the native look and feel; it is easy
to write distributed applications and it is easy to save and
restore objects from a persistent store.

The Mjolner BETA System is being used successfully for teaching
both first grade and second grade students at several
universities.

Distribution Media:
3.5" Floppy Diskettes, FTP.

Licensing Policy:
The normal version requires a licence per CPU. Server licences
are available at reduced cost. Educational licences do not
permit the use of the system for commercial purposes, but permit
free distribution of Personal Editions (see below) for students.

A Personal Edition containing compiler, the basic libraries,
persistence, X frameworks is available. This version may not be
used for commercial purposes and/or teaching.

OS Provisions:
Linux 1.0 or later, RAM: 4Mb (8 to 16 recommended), XFree86,
OSF/Motif 1.1 or later (for MotifEnv programs only; not required
to run compiler), Programs needed: (g)as, ld, make.

Documentation:
Full system includes 1000 pages of printed documentation. FTP
customers have access to all documentation in PostScript format.
The Personal Edition includes 200 pages of printed
documentation, and remaining documentation in PostScript.
