Why does this one image rotate when viewed on an iPad?

I am putting together a simple web page about Alex, our recent sixth
grandchild, as I have with the first five grandchildren. It is:

https://www.wkrp.org/alex/index.html

That little page displays OK on several different computer browsers like
Seamonkey, Chrome, AOL, and Firefox, but when I look at it on SWIMBO's
iPad (or her iPhone) the second one of the three photos is rotated 90
degrees clockwise.

I tried shrinking that photo's dimensions to about half what the are now
which didn't help a bit. That photo still rotated clockwise when viewed
on the iPad.

Help please, and thanks,

Jeff

In article <39OdnUFP5r7SaQ3A...@giganews.com>, Jeff Wisnia
its orientation tag is to rotate it 90 degrees clockwise.

the ipad and iphone are doing the right thing and rotating it, but
apparently the other browsers ignore the tag, which is a bug.

the other two images do not have an orientation tag, so no rotation is
done.

you can either set the orientation tag for the second image to what it
should be, or remove it entirely.

How to do that?

I would open the photo in a graphics editor and rotate it there.
Wouldn't it be re-set when saved? I suppose it depends on your graphics
editor.

by far, the best exif tag utility is exiftool, however, it's a command
line utility, although there are some gui tools that wrap it.

<https://sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/>

it can display and alter any or all of the tags and there's a *lot* of
help, examples and other resources on the site as well as elsewhere.

in this particular case, only the orientation tag needs to be set
correctly, or removed, which although is the wrong solution, will also
work.

I had the same problem with one photo on a website the other day so I opened it in Preview and rotated it left then rotated it right then saved it. Now its okay.

Dunno if the OP is on Windows or Mac for his desktop, where nospam's advice
of exiftool will work on both, where this is an exiftool FAQ for how.
<https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/faq.html>

I'm not sure if "ExifTool GUI" is on MacOS (probably) where this is Windows
<http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/>

In addition, there's "exiv2", which is also a command-line utility.
<http://www.exiv2.org/index.html>

Also there are a host of other Windows/MacOS exif changing tools:
<https://www.geckoandfly.com/7987/how-to-change-exif-data-date-and-camera-properties-with-free-editor/>
Which lists links and descriptions for:
o AnalogExif | Windows | macOS <https://sourceforge.net/projects/analogexif/>
o ExifTool GUI | Windows <http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/>
o Exif Pilot | Windows <https://www.colorpilot.com/exif.html>
o EXIFManager | Windows <https://sourceforge.net/projects/exifmanager/>
o Metadata++ | Windows <https://www.logipole.com/metadata++-en.htm>
o EXIF Date Changer Lite | Windows <https://www.relliksoftware.com/exifdatechanger/>

On Windows only, Irfanview & Xnview also edit EXIF data, as do a host of
metadata editors shown in the "META EXIF DATA TOOLS" section below.
<http://www.photo-freeware.net/categories/image-viewer/>

There's another list of free EXIF editor tools on Windows here
<https://listoffreeware.com/free-exif-editor-software-windows/>

Since Usenet is a potluck where we all bring value to share, I hope this
helps the OP, although I wasn't sure if the OP was on the MacOS, Windows,
or Linux desktop, so caveat emptor on the platform specificities of some of
the advice above.

Many thanks from the OP for all the intelligent responses. I didn't know
about orientation tags before and I guess I never had this problem
before even though I must have put at least 50 .jpg images on family
websites I've created.

So, I downloaded and installed the "analog exif" tool and ran it. I
loaded that image which I needed to set the orientation tag on but the
only screen displayed was one which seemed to have a lot of camera
details on it but nothing related to orientation tags. I couldn't find a
way to go to a screen which would let me change to orientation tag.

More help please.

Just by way of example, I loaded a bunch of JPEGs into ExifToolGui
where this screenshot shows what the "orientation" tag looks like.

You seem to be on the Mac desktop, so I'll let those users help you further
find and then change the orientation tag (as I am on Windows/Linux).

i don't know what 'analog exif' is, but exiftool will show *all* tags,
one of which is orientation, and it can modify or delete it or any
other tag.

i'm sure other tools will also work, but i've never used any of them.

I hate to be feeling and sounding so incompetent since I've been messing
with computers and software since the latter 1950s when I had a student
job at MIT working on the Whirlwind computer (Which used vacuum tubes
and magnetic core memory).

I installed exiftool(-k).exe and have it's shortcut icon on my
computer's desktop. When I drag that .jpeg file which rotates when
displaying on an iPad into that icon a window opens up with a load of
white on black text including a line which reads "Orientation is "Rotate
90 CW".

Now all I need is someone to explain what I have to do to change or
remove the "Orientation" tag.

Thanks again.

what was your job? hopefully not replacing tubes...

you need to run it from a windows command line prompt or macos terminal.

alternately, find a gui exif tag editor that can alter/remove rotation,
but those tend to be limited in what they can do.

> Now all I need is someone to explain what I have to do to change or
> remove the "Orientation" tag.

<https://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/99586/how-to-remove-orientati
on-attribute-from-the-photo-without-touching-other-exif-d>

from that link, using exiftool, type the following at the command
prompt:
exiftool -Orientation= /target/dir/or/File

Replace /target/dir/or/File with the files and/or directories you
want to process. If run under Unix/Mac, use single quotes to avoid
bash interpretation.

even easier, after typing exiftool -Orientation= (with a trailing
space), drag the image file to the command prompt window and it will
auto-fill the correct path (mac or windows).

more info:
<https://leancrew.com/all-this/2009/04/derotating-jpegs-with-exiftool/>
exiftool -Orientation=1 -n <imagename>

will get stick the value of 1 into the Orientation field, and my
computer will now display the images as if the camera had been
held in the normal orientation.

It wasn't a very high-tech job. Mostly I was serving as a nighttime
programmable temperature controller for ovens in which we were baking
out large sized cathode ray tubes called "Charactrons" under vacuum to
"sterilize" them. They were had two sets of electron beam deflection
plates in them, one between the cathode and a metal stencil containing
figures and numbers and a second set between that stencil and the face
of the tube.

The computer's software sent the right voltages to both sets of
deflection plates so the beam went through the right stencil opening and
then landed on the right place on the tube face. See:
http://www.content-animation.org.uk/computers_and_animation/charactron.htm

For "printouts" from those displays they used remotely controlled cameras.

All I got to do most of the time was to change the bakeout oven
temperature controls to different settings according to a time schedule
the big guns gave me.

A bit later, I used to row on the Charles ... not too far from you.
o The Charles, by the park, was a stinking cesspool in those days.

Once, I caught a crab & had to swim to shore; immediately when I returned
to the Weld Boathouse, they forced me to get a tetanus booster.

The good news was it was only ten cents for the red/green line on Sundays!
o We'd take the green line (as I recall) to the dog races - remember those?

If folks are interested, I wrote up a quick log file of my Windows 10
installation of ExifToolGui just now (for the Windows 10 newsgroup).
o Are there any other good freeware EXIF metadata editors on Windows?
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.photo.digital/PpDYnKFYzA0>

Here's a quick "log file" I wrote while installing on Windows, ExifToolGui.
1. Download the exiftool command-line executable from the canonical site:
<http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/>
2. Save to your standard software archive hierarchy (where is up to you):
c:\software\editor\exif\exiftool\exiftool-11.65.zip
3. Download the ExifToolGui from the canonical site:
<http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/exiftoolgui516.zip>
4. Save to your standard software archive hierarchy (where is up to you):
c:\software\editor\exif\exiftoolgui\exiftoolgui516.zip
5. Create an application installation location, as desired (where is up to you):
mkdir c:\apps\editors\exif\exiftool
6. Extract both archives into that single software installation location:
c:\apps\editors\exif\exiftool\jhead_jpegtran\
c:\apps\editors\exif\exiftool\workspace\
c:\apps\editors\exif\exiftool\exiftool(-k).exe
c:\apps\editors\exif\exiftool\ExifToolGUI.exe
c:\apps\editors\exif\exiftool\ExifToolGUI_readme.txt
Note: I kept them together; you can separate them (that's up to you).
7. Rename, copy (or move, your choice) the command-line tool to your $PATH:
copy exiftool(-k).exe C:\Windows\System32\exiftool.exe
(Or, modify your $PATH as you see fit, to point to the app location.)
Note ExifToolGui expects the name "exiftool.exe" [i.e., sans "(-k)"].
8. Create a shortcut to the ExifToolGui.exe
and right-click that shortcut to "Send-To" your WinXP style cascade menu
StartMenu: editors > exif > exiftool > exifToolGUI.lnk
TARGET = C:\app\editor\exif\exiftool\ExifToolGUI.exe
STARTIN = C:\app\editor\exif\exiftool
9 Left-click your WinXP style native Win10 cascade menu you just added:
StartMenu: editors > exif > exiftool > exifToolGUI.lnk
10. This creates the following 'ini' file if all works well sans error:
c:\apps\editors\exif\exiftool\ExifToolGUIv5.ini

Voila!
ExifToolGui is up and running on Windows.

Did you know Howard Kirshner? Dave Israel? Dit Morse? Dave
Bailey? Fred Irish? What about Dick Williamson? He was class of
'57 in Course 6 and worked on Whirlwind.

The men are Jay Forrester and Bob Everett.

Did you try what I did?

No, I use Windows exclusively and I still hope I will be able to learn
how to change or remove the orientation tag on a jpeg image. The several
Exif editors I've looked at will show me the tag for Orientation but
seem to have to run under some other form of windows to be able to
change or delete tags. Am I missing something here? Is there a "do all"
jpeg editor which runs under Windows?

Did you try Right-Clicking the tag?

Yes, while using exiftool(-k).exe on my desktop. When I drag the .jpeg
image I need to fix over it a white on black page opens up with a list
of tags on it. The "Orientation" tag on that list has "Rotate 90 CW"
after it. Right clicking on "Orientation" does nothing.

I'm not sure I'll ever understand how to change the orientation of the
jpeg image. I keep thinking there must be a simple all in one program
that will let me do that in a few seconds.

even easier, download this, which has all tags removed and should
display correctly:

Yes, that did it just fine. The image now displays as it should on
SWIMBO's iPad and iPhone. Muchas Gracias nospam.

I can't remember ever encountering that problem before, I've put what's
likely over a hundred jpeg images from all different sources on my
personal websites as far back as 19 years ago and none ever oriented
incorrectly. Like the ones on this site:
