Good that I missed this great opportunity (yay, Dolphin will get open sourced) to get filled with false hopes & wild expectations.

I'm sure it felt great while it lasted, but damn, it must have hurt to come crashing down again.

Now I don't dare start hoping.

[was really tempted to throw sarcastic thanks in A.B.'s way]

What I would give for a mature / polished smalltalk implementation with a future ahead of it, not requiring you to basically invite the whole company producing it to live with you (meaning something like Cincom's licensing policies).

Maybe Exept (http://exept.de) will produce new stable major version in our lifetimes, they are cooking Smalltalk/X steadily at https://swing.fit.cvut.cz/projects/stx-jv/wiki

What it also really needs is a larger community, the roots are pretty solid, the lacking parts are mostly polish & libraries.

Check it out at least as a curiosity, a Smalltalk that (in addition to bytecode & jit), can compile through C to standard executables & dynamic libraries.

just checked, and they are announcing preview of 6.2.4 for, sit tightly :

macOSX
raspberry-pi
linux
win32

(mac & pi being new additions)

Why you say so? Do you have any confirmation that there is no progress on the subject?

Yes, I've been doing some preparatory work and the existing 6.2 codebase is now under Git and compiles completely under VisualStudio Community 2013. This took a fair amount of work but, fortunately for us, Microsoft have now release the old VS 2013 Pro (the pro version was previously needed to build Dolphin) as their free offering.

Best regards

Will it be possible to keep a download-and-use compiled image online also.

Sanjay

True, I was bitchmoaning, and I'm trying not to repeat it now, hopefully there will be some progress on this front sometimes.

Since I'm just getting into the green numbers now, I might actually be able to chip in. I'll try to keep on lookout !

PS: I whore myself out using basicaly any language (don't aske me to enumerate all I've met, if not our univer, at least the rest of our youth might grow cold before I'd spout all the love and hated ;-).

But since "commercial grade" Smalltalk licenses cost a ton (and a few limbs; on an annual basis ;-), I used Smalltalk (Squeak, back then) "under fire" just for a few small apps where Morphic was actually a gret boon.

Ok, a bloody convenient dirty shortut ;-)

If you've ever got your audince to laugh by detaching those "close/minimize/..." buttons from the panel, and used them to close the window afterwards, you kow what I mean ;-)

Perhaps A.B. just played a cruel joke on us ?

It was surprising to hear about Dolphin getting open-sourced in light of his previous stance:

"Both Blair and I dislike the Open Source movement intensely and we would rather see Dolphin gradually disappear into the sands of time than instantly lose all commercial value in one fell swoop."

source: https://tekkie.wordpress.com/2007/08/14/dolphin-smalltalk-is-discontinued/]

But as L. Torvalds stated: "Inteligence is the ability to change your opinion in light of new evidence", so I harbored some hope ...

Yeah, buddhists had it right, expectations translate into disappointment :-/

So it's taken rather longer than any of us would have liked, but I can now announce that Dolphin will be open sourced in just a few short hours from now. Because of the delay, we have decided to dispense with any ideas of crowd funding and just go straight for a release. The sources for both the image and the virtual machine will be available on GitHub from 3pm GMT on Dec 29th. This is a new version, Dolphin 7, that is modelled off the previous X6.1 Professional Edition (although you can choose to build DCE if you so choose). The licence is MIT.

Take a look a the revamped http://object-arts.com website for more details.

Best regards and a happy New Year to you all.

Wow, awesome news. I was in the process of making some dolphin smalltalk youtube tutorials, this makes it all the more enticing.

I never regretted purchasing Dolphin, it's a fantastic development environment.
