(Still) new at Filemaker 5.5, and I am running into another issue.

I am trying to define a new Calculation Field (with text results)
with information from following fields, arranged as follows:

FirstName & " " & LastName
Organisation
Address
City & " " & Province
Country & " " & PostalCode

Creating spaces between FirstName and LastName etc works; but how do I
create carriage returns within this Calculation Field?
Also, some fields I am including in this calculation (like
Organisation) may be emtpy in some records; can I prevent that this
will show up as a blank line when empty?

Suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
Jose

insert a "ś" in your calculationfield, this symbol stands for a carriage
return. To prevent empty fields to generate an empty line you have to use an
if ... then in your calculation. e.g.: If( organisation = ""; "";
organisation & "ś")

good luck...
Klaas.

You might also want to consider looking into merge fields if you are doing
this just for printing purposes.

Bedankt Klaas, van Early Music Vancouver in Canada... The first part
of your suggestion works when I enter the following:
First Name & " " & Last Name & "¶" & Organisation & "¶" & Address &
"¶" & City & " " & Province State & "¶" & Country & " " & Post Zip
Code

As I said, I'm new to Filemaker, and I have a problem with the layout
of the second part of your suggestion,
If( organisation = ""; ""; >organisation & "¶")

Whatever I try, I can't get this accepted and get messages that it
expects something else. Can you help me out and cut and paste this
into the first part in the proper way? Bedankt,
Jose

That got beat up with email reply formatting. Should be as follows:

if(organisation = "", "", organisation & "ś" )

Basically, the conditional is saying, "if organisation is blank/empty, don't
add anything, otherwise add the organisation text plus a paragraph marker."

I'm wondering, would if(IsBlank(organisation)...) work better?

Jose,

I also think it was an e-mail formatting problem. Here is the complete
calculation, there should be no > or < symbols in it so if there are any,
just delete them.
FirstName & " " & LastName & "ś" & If( Organisation = ""; ""; Organisation &
"ś") & Adress & "ś" & City & " " & Province & "ś" & Country & " " &
PostalCode

Klaas.

How about a simple [cntrl][enter]for each carriage return. Works for me
everytime.

In the calc field defintiion box, just click on the return character up
top. Just be sure it is inside quotes somewhere, either as part of another
string or as its own string

Oops -- I missed something:

To prevent blank lines from appearing, you'll need to surround the carriage
return with an IF statement, something like:
if( isempty(organization), "", "P" & organization) -- where the "P"
represent a carriage return.
