Hi all~!

I hope your Spring is blooming well!

I wanted to alert and invite you
to participate in a Workshop on

3D Metadata and Semantics
at Web3D 2019 (co-located with SIGGRAPH) in LA in late July

Participation from this group will be really valuable to the graphics and 3D model community!   ... and our common mission!

Please contact me if you might contribute!!

with best regards,
_nicholas

a draft summary below:

The workshop will be organized by the X3D Semantic Web Working Group, whose mission is to publish models to the Web using X3D combined with the Semantic Web standards in order to best gain Web interoperability and enable intelligent 3D applications, feature-based 3D model querying, and reasoning over 3D scenes.

Semantic 3D/VR/AR is an emerging field of 3D graphics and animation. The semantic web, which has been derived from metadata and knowledge representation, aims at the evolutionary development of the current web towards a distributed database linking structured content described by ontologies. The semantic web is currently the main approach to building intelligent, explorable 3D applications in a variety of applications and domains, with content and animations described at different levels of abstraction.

Works related to various application domains, including e-commerce, education, cultural heritage, entertainment and infotainment, social media, tourism, medicine, military, industry and construction (and many others) are welcome. The approaches will be considered in the context of building scalable, pervasive 3D/VR/AR systems using different semantic formats (e.g., RDF, RDFS and OWL), 3D formats and browsers. Finally, common fields of interest and opportunities of future collaboration will be identified and discussed.

The main goals of the workshop are to develop conversations and new knowledge about:

  1. Best practices for metadata and semantic information/relationships using X3D as a Web-based presentation layer.

  2. Use of X3Dv4 and HTML5/DOM together in any Web page utilizing a family of specifications and practices provided by the Semantic Web, such as HTML5 Microdata (microformats) and Linked Open Data, (possibly) MPEG-7 and related references.

  3. Utilizing semantic information in concert with archival export, publishing, visualization, and printing of any 3D model as X3D.

  4. Efficient indexing, searching, comparing, and analysing X3D models through the advanced use of metadata, shape geometry, etc.

  5. Development of X3Dv4 OWL ontology from the X3D Unified Object Model (X3DUOM) using best-practice design patterns, starting with those shown by prior published work.

  6. Best tools for developing ontologies and knowledge bases, which can enhance works of the group, e.g., Protege and WebProtege.

  7. Combination of semantic X3D with outcomes of other Web3D working groups, including Computer-Aided Design (CAD), 3D printing/scanning, Medical, Cultural and Natural Heritage, Humanoid Animation (HAnim), Building Information Models (BIM), etc.

  8. Domain-specific vocabularies and taxonomies that are suitable for use in concert with graphics-specific ontologies such as the X3D Ontology.

  9. Interoperability of X3D with Semantic Web standards for greatest possible reuse and integration with the Web.

The workshop will also address the development of a variety of ontologies, methods and tools for semantic 3D content, in particular:

  1. ontologies for 3D and animation annotation, representation and retrieval,

  2. semantic metadata for 3D and animation description,

  3. ontologies based on 3D formats,

  4. semantic 3D formats, including semantic X3D,

  5. domain-specific ontologies for 3D description and representation,

  6. semantic modeling and assembly of 3D content,

  7. semantic methods and tools for on-demand, adaptive and contextual 3D visualization and generation, including contextual VR/AR web services,

  8. semantic queries to 3D scenes and 3D content repositories,

  9. semantics for immersive analytics in 3D,

  10. semantic representation and modeling of 3D animations and interactions,

  11. ontologies for multimodal interaction in VR/AR,

  12. semantic representation and modeling of 3D content behavior,

  13. explorable VR/AR applications and queryable behavior-rich VR/AR applications,

  14. semantic 3D/VR/AR web applications,

  15. semantic 3D graph annotations,

  16. novel interactive semantic 3D applications in all areas and sectors, e.g., entertainment, education, training, cultural heritage, medicine, military, smart-manufacturing / industry 4.0, information visualization, scientific visualization, geo-visualization, building information modeling (BIM), and architecture.
