Well, it has been a while since I made a really big public mistake. This is
the first of 2013, anyway.

Sorry I got you all excited. But I needed excitement today.

Looking for 3rd time at this bird, after confirming all the easy stuff (nice
white butt etc), I suddenly realized the bill was slightly the wrong shape
and... BLACK. And the eyestripe was too prominent, and... well, you get the
idea.

Let he who has never misidentified cast the first stone.

No worries Linda. :) I completely understand. I've done the same thing! With all of the redpoll sighting posts on CObirds, it's like I contracted redpoll fever! I've been obsessively looking for any redpoll to show up in my yard all winter long. I have turned at least 20 house finches and a few dark-eyed juncos into redpolls, just with my mind! Still no redpoll for a yard bird. Oh well, now it's on to turning bumble bees into hummingbirds and leaves into rare warblers. :)
