Birding in Lincoln, Washington, Morgan, and Weld Counties

Joe Roller, Ric Olson, Dick Schottler wandered through these counties with the hope of finding longspurs and sparrows. With the snow cover north of Limon, conditions looked good. We saw few horned larks during the day and no longspurs. Continuing to the Prewitt Reservoir and back along the I 70 corridor and then down towards Latham Reservoir we ended up with an interesting day. We found 3 groups of migrating long-billed curlews of 42 south of Last Chance, 47 south of Brush, and 83 north of Roggen for an astounding total of 172.  Colorado Birds, Righter and Andrews gives a high count of 64 at Neeskah Reservoir in 1988. The most amazing sight was a Wild Turkey in the same field of view with the first group of long-billed curlews. A total of 73 species were observed.
