Dear Members and Associate of IAU Division E: Sun & Heliosphere,

I would like to circulate following information for your attention.

1. The new Division E web pages have been recently set up at https://www.iau.org/science/scientific_bodies/divisions/E/info/, thanks to efforts of the IAU Secretariat to enhance the functionality of the web pages of all scientific bodies of the IAU.

You are encouraged to visit the web site and familiarize with it. You may notice that some pages are still not complete or just blank. On behalf of Division E Steering Committee (DSC) I encourage you to make suggestions and send any inputs you think of interest to the wide community of our Division. Dr. Marc DeRosa, as secretary of Division E SC, deals with our web pages communicating with IAU Secretariat

2. The IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (http://www.astro4dev.org/) has a new point of contact with the IAU divisions. Vanessa McBride (van...@astro4dev.org) is an astronomer who has been working at the OAD since January 2017. She was recently employed as a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town, in joint appointment with the South African Astronomical Observatory. As you may know, the OAD is focused on assisting the Astronomy community to contribute to the goals of global development, supporting development projects through the annual call for proposals, and the provision of a library of best practice for the astronomy development community. The new contact point from Division E is Dr. Sarah Gibson.

3. A new IAU PhD Prize has been established since 2016 to recognize outstanding scientific achievement in astrophysics around the world. Each IAU Division has, once a year, the opportunity to award its own prize to the candidate it feels has carried out the most remarkable work in the previous year (i.e. a PhD Thesis which has been defended between the 16 December in the previous year, and 15 December this year).

The recipient of each award receives a range of prizes, tailored by each Division at their own discretion. A standard prize includes airfare and accommodation to attend the next IAU General Assembly where certificates will be awarded. Other prizes might include the opportunity to present their thesis work at Division Days, an invitation to attend presentations to the IAU Executive Committee meeting and dinner at the General Assembly, and the possibility of presenting a talk at either a plenary or special session. For detailed information please visit https://www.iau.org/science/grants_prizes/iau_grants/phd_prize/.

All Divisions of the IAU are actively raising the awareness of the IAU among junior scientists and researchers. Many of our junior colleagues are not members of the IAU and may not be familiar with its goals and benefits. On behalf of the DSC I ask you all to spread the message with the IAU PhD Prize to your junior colleagues at your institution.

As usual, myself and the Division E SC is willing to receive from you all comments, suggestions, reports, news etc.

With Best Regards

Yihua
