Hi Everyone,

I founded the company, Aquila Education, which is an education technology company partnered with Google Expedition to bring virtual reality kits to schools in order to enhance student learning.

Although most of the schools that purchase the kits are in the United States, I actually live in Cork.  I know that the kits are too expensive for most schools in Ireland to purchase outright, however, I was thinking of setting up a loaner program so schools can use the kits for a day or two at a low cost.

Do you think this is something that schools in Ireland would be interested in?

Any thoughts/concerns are welcome!

Thanks!

We have some good contacts within the Google Expeditions community. I would hold off a little bit, there are a few big changes coming down the line which might have an impact on schools decision making. We have a Google Expeditions project ready to roll for August so we are in the same position.

Hi from VA by the way.

Hi

My experience of providing a resource for schools is that there is a huge expectation of getting everything for free. In general, despite talk of budgets, schools will just not pay. They are too used to freebies. And there are plenty of big players happy to provide them.

You may need to find a third party support to enable a  free-to-user provision.

Good luck with your enterprise. Sounds brilliant!!

Ciao

Hi,

I had thought that Google expeditions required some dedicated hardware but I see that google have just publicly released their Expeditions app for IOS and Android. So I assume now that if teachers and students can get a sufficient number of handsets and some google cardboard sets (~5 dollars each) then its possible now for any school to try it out for free. Possibly there's some underlying requirements such as high speed Wifi connectivity etc but it would be good to see if a small class could be run with this free app.

Thank you for all of the insights!  I know there are definitely challenges with budgets in the Irish school districts.

John - do you work with/run an edtech company?  I know that there will be changes released in Expeditions within the next few weeks; I am assuming after ISTE?

I am glad everyone is just as excited as I am!  Once I have everything sorted, I will be sure to reach out to those interested.

Just for my own reference, how many students do you typically have in a class? Also, how many days would you be looking to rent the kit for?

If you are interested in learning more about VR, we have some great blog posts on it here.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly at:  in...@aquilaeducation.com

I am really excited to see this thread
We have decided to do a small community of practice with another school in our area next year using VR and art. We are (as someone pointed out in an earlier message on this thread) hoping to do it on the cheap. We were in Google (amazing, fabulous day had by all involved - thank you to the digital championship initiative which we got heaps out of this year). In Google they used cardboards and it inspired us to have a "go". Our teachers have ipads and most of the kids have smart phones so doing it on the cheap seems really possible. My digital champions don't know this yet but Ill get a few in next week to help me to assemble the card boards. Then we will take an art class to a gallery next year (virtually of course)............another school will do the same and we will share the resources and the planning..........

Someone who is "into" tech integration and art might point me to a a good gallery on the expedition app - I have found a few but was hoping for something amazing like MoMA or the Louvre - think big!!!!!

Great and opportune thread any more help or info really welcome. I'm hoping to get the teachers and students involved to present at #ictedu next year

Hi Clare,

There are several art Expeditions on the Google Expeditions app.  You can search the current list of Expeditions here  If you choose "art" from the subject, it will filter all of the Expeditions that relate directly to art.
