Hi Greg,

I’ve been playing with a lot of distros over the last few months… and tbh - Elementary and Mint both come out on top.

(I’ve also tried Raspberry Pi OS (for Pi users of course); Ubuntu basic; Zorin; NomadBSD (runs more than adequately from a USB stick - nice classroom possibilities); Fedora (it has a server edition))

A few points of takeaway I’ve found…
  • Much easier to install than expected (all)
  • Almost all services / software / equivalent on every OS (even AirDrop like macOS)
  • Security higher/better than Windows IMHO (not all OS)
  • Nomad running on USB opens lots of possibilities
  • All free (some donationware)
  • Very “light” install for hardware (really! I have 2 c.2010 windows laptops i3, 4gb, SSDs - running linux distros and they’re like new machines)
  • Downside : some “specialist” knowledge of installation of software through command line - but lots of help available online and well worth it IMO.
It’s a project people would have to be familiar with - but the benefits (especially for old hardware) are remarkable.

A final case in point - I’ve edited an 8GB video file with Kden Live on ElementaryOS and it works with live preview and no problems exporting. Impressive.

Cheers,

Chris
