I have heard from my father a slightly different version:

"sarvatra jayam anvicchet putrAt shish.yAt parAjAyam"
and never found out any textual source for it.

Just as I never found the source for the other profound principle of Ancient Indian Philosophy of Education:

"AcAryAt pAdam Adhatsva
pAdam s-brahmachAritAh/
pAdam adhyApanenaiva
pAdam kAla-kramen.a tu//"

What a balanced and insightful distribution of sources of learning.
But where is this from ?

I came across a different version of this verse  (in a commentary of gItAbhAShya-prameyadIpikA) -

AcAryAt pAdamAdatte pAdaM shiShyaM svabuddhitaH |\\
pAdaM sabrahmacAribhyo pAdaM vyAkhyAnakaushalAt ||

I could not trace the original source either.

In the initial posting of my query, icched in the subject line should be icchet. I should have removed the sandhi error before forwarding the query.

In the helpful reference given by Srinidhi (reproduced below), sabrahmacAribhyo should be sabrahmacAribhya.h.

The verse as I heard it had the following readings:
aacaaryaat paadam aadatte paada.m ;si.sya.h sva-medhayaa /
paada.m kaalena labhate paada.m sabrahmacaaribhi.h //

Dear Sir,

As far as I remember, the verse occurs in the commentary of Haradatta on Apastamba Dharmasutra 1.7.29. I will however recheck.

The actual reading in Haradatta's commentary is:
AcAryAt pAdam Adatte pAdaM s'is.yaH svamedhayA |
pAdaM sabrahmacAribhyaH pAdaH kAlena pacyate ||
                                      -  The commentary Ujjvala of Haradatta on ApastambadharmasUtra  pras'na 1 - khan.d.a 7 - sUtra 29

Dr. Mira,

I appreciate the precise information you have given about the occurrence of the insightful verse, regarding the source of which Prof. Arindam Chakrabarti had queried (I assume that there is an indication in the Ujjwala to the effect that the verse is being cited -- that it is not being composed by Hara-datta himself). Now we know that the verse is at least one thousand years old. I hope that we will have similar luck also with the line sarvato jayam anvicchet putraad icchet (/putraac ;si.syaat) paraajayam about the source of which I had sought help.

The source is Sri Nīlakaṇṭha's commentary on Mahābhārata, Udyoga-parva, Chapter 44, Verse 16. The verse on which he is commenting also says something similar:

kālena pādaṁ labhate tathārthaṁ tataś ca pādaṁ guru-yogataś ca
utsāha-yogena ca pādam ṛcchecchāstreṇa pādaṁ ca tato 'bhiyāti

Translation: The brahmacārī attains a quarter of the meaning of the Vedas by passage of time; a quarter by staying with the Guru; a quarter by his own enthusiasm and a quarter by mutual discussion with others.

Nīlakaṇṭha quotes this subhāṣita in his commentary. I have attached the excerpt to this message. In the Mahābhārata with Nīlakaṇṭha's commentary that i uploaded on http://archive.org/details/mahabharata_nk you can find it on page number 1385 of the PDF.

I am reminded of a quotation from a Brahmana-text.I do not have the exact reference, but, the idea is almost similar. It is just possible that this Vedic quotation might be the basis of the the Nilakantha-quotation.
