At this time, I am trying to rebuild the Browser Capabilities Project.

I have most but not all of the pieces to get it running so I am considering a rewrite from the ground up, still providing the same output, just a different back end system.

This is subject to change if I can get access to the missing pieces.

My goal right now is to get the basic links up and running again as they are on the main page of the current temporary site.

I'm also wanting to get everything in place for the update system that the phpbrowscap uses to get it's updates for example.

Is there anything else anyone needs immediately that I might have overlooked?

Thanks!

If there's anything you need that I've got I'll do my best to provide it. Also, not sure if you got my e-mail reply but you're welcome to use browscap.org as your domain name. Let me know if you want it and I'll prepare it for transfer to whatever registrar you want to use. ~gary.

Oh, same thing for @browscap on Twitter. If you want it, it's yours. ~gary.

Gary,

For now it looks like I am missing the /data directory for the website as well as the /download directory.

browscap.org would be great. If you would like to email me offline to let me know how we can get it transferred I would appreciate it.

Also, @browscap for twitter.

Thanks again!

The /data folder and the /data/downloads folders were outside of the /www folder so that I could control downloading "the files" otherwise people could download as many times as they wanted to -- I'll put them both somewhere you can download them because they're too big to send via e-mail -- I used the ADODB.Stream object to deliver the files. If you don't do it that way (or whatever the equivalent is on whatever platform you're using) the bandwidth can quickly get out of control. Before I added the abuse manager I'd had close to 4TB of downloads in just a couple of weeks due to someone trying to DDoS the site by downloading all "the files" several times per second.

I'll contact you tomorrow (it's late here) off-list about transferring the domain name and Twitter handle to you, and getting those two folder to you as well. Thanks a lot for your interest in keeping the project going.

If needed or wanted, I could offer the necessary bandwith capabilities on our webhosting servers. We could spare several TB of traffic and a good part of a Gbit/s uplink which should, according to GaryK's statement, take care of the traffic.
We also have several anti-DDoS measures in place so it's pretty stable against brute attacks such as bandwith eating.

The offer would boil down to a standard-looking webhosting account including your own FTP accounts, PHP e.t.c. so managing data should be as easy as it gets.

We've been since a long time a user of this project and would appreciate if we could give something back to the project to rebuild it.

Cheers,
Daniel

Daniel,

I would be interested in discussing your offer offline (outside of the group.)

I want to get the full service back online soon, however, my target right now is to keep it online as it was the last few days then work on the other aspects to bring the full Browsers Capabilities Project back online.

Target right now are the files that were on the main page recently, as well as the update process for things like the phpbrowscap library.

I want to bring it online at browscap.org however there might be a temporary domain in use during this initial transfer phase.

I have setup a temporary email account for this transition.

browsercap[at]gmail[dot]com

(yeah, browscap was already taken) =)

Hi RAD Moose - let me know how I can help with getting this project back online. I have been maintaining http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/php-browser-detection/ with updated copies of Gary's browscap.ini files for some time and would like to see this continue. I could probably offer a mirror for the new browscap.org site I have a few dedicated servers that would probably work. Feel free to email me offlist.

Joshua Estes,

Thanks. My goal today is just to get the files back online, including the scripts used by some of the auto-updating applications.

Once i get that online and it is stable, then I want to take a slight break, regroup and get everything going again, including new updates.

Thanks to the assistance of Joshua Estes for providing additional testing, the parts that are often used for automatic update scripts are in place.

The following URL replaces the Update URL in many scripts.
Revised: http://tempdownloads.browserscap.com/stream.php?BrowsCapINI
Original: http://browsers.garykeith.com/stream.php?BrowsCapINI

The following URL replaces the Version Date check URL in many scripts
Revised: http://tempdownloads.browserscap.com/versions/version-date.php
Original: http://browsers.garykeith.com/versions/version-date.asp

In phpbrowscap libary, around line 100 or so in Browscap.php the two URLs that match above should be replaced with the revised URLs.

Check with the support contact for your particular script for further information.

Do note that these URLs are temporary as to keep sites functioning. I will be monitoring the temporary site and adjust as needed.

There is a temporary web page at http://tempdownloads.browserscap.com/ for other downloads. Please use the alternate links whenever possible.

Thanks for the update. I'm not sure if this is te place to mention it, but a drupal module I use (browscap) uses 'browsers.garykeith.com/versions/version-number.asp', perhaps instead of ../version-date.asp

minor detail, it also requested .../stream.asp instead of .../steamp.php

R. Moose

Can you provide me a URL so I can contact the developer of this module?

The site does support version-number already =) I was not aware of who uses it so I didn't mention it in the post, but it is already active.

http://tempdownloads.browserscap.com/versions/version-number.php

or

http://tempdownloads.browserscap.com/versions/version-number.asp

You can use .asp or .php at this time as the site does automatically redirect .asp requests to the .php equivalent. Since you are already in there making an edit for the domain, I would suggest also changing the extension to .php as well.

Do note that the site's use of .asp or .php does not limit what type of server/site it can be run on, it is just the script that I am running on my end.

Thanks for the kind words.  Please note that I am just continuing on Gary Keith's work of 14+ years and without his work and persistence, we would have nothing.

There are a lot of things I am juggling behind the scenes to get things in place to start back up new updates and at that time, I will be looking for assistance and more input.

I am waiting on a few things from Gary such as the domain name transfer and some files. (Gary, if you are reading this, my emails are bouncing when I reply.)

For now the main goal is to get the update process stable and available for everyone.

(btw, there was a typo in the 2nd URL showing the old stream in the message your quoted.. it was stream.asp on Gary's site. the new extensions are .php for now, although .asp does "work")

Gary,

I was worried that I may not get a chance to tell you this before you left for good, but I also wanted to add my voice to those who have already thanked you, and Thank you again for all your hard work and effort on this project over the years. I began using your script five years ago, and had no idea you had already been at it for nearly nine years. I also did not know how cumbersome or problematic maintenance had become, and this only serves to further deepen the Thanks that I (and I'm sure so many others) have for you.

Best Regards in all your future endeavors, and I wish you good health; as I read previously that you had been struggling with it. I only wish the community had a way of giving something else back to you before you go--I'm sure you could use a well deserved vacation. Do you have, or could you set up a link for us to buy you a beer (or three)?

Hi,

Thank you R. Moose for taking over the project. And tnx you GaryK for maintaining it before this!

I just started using the browsercap.ini file because we build our own tracking system (We have a new law that forbids the use of cookies for tracking) So I have high traffic site. I notice a lot of missed (Default browsers detected) so I have a big list of non matched browser strings.just of 3 days around 6000 unmatched browser strings (a lot of duplicated an crawlers). So I am just thinking how to help and so to improve the browser matching. I can supply a list of unmatched browser strings or help out a bit in making matching patterns?

It might be an idea to use the github way for updates. Just let me know if you need help!

A Short list of unmatched browser strings. (from the raw 2000 only the unique):

Thank you for the kind words.

If possible, in the future, please start a new thread when discussing something off topic of the particular thread. It will make it easier to keep track.

Can you tell me what revision of the browsercap.ini file you are using?

I also want to say thanks to Gary for the wonderful work he has done over the last many years, and to R Morse to picking this back up!

I'm willing to help any way I can. I'm not really experienced with programming (although I have some some PHP / MySQL work), but I can type and help with the "grunt level" stuff.

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this project continue to grow!

Moose,

I'm not sure what your plans are for after you've completed the initial rebuild but I'd be interested in pitching in a hand.

For example, creating a way for contributors to submit new User Agent strings to be processed by the system and approved by the community/admins and triggering automatic builds on a regular basis.

I know this is a bit early to discuss such things but I wanted to throw the ideas out there for you to mull over as you transition from a rebuild to an expansion.

I miss this project, used it all the time. May I recommend hosting the .ini file formats on a CDN, that way you don't have to worry about your server being down. Let me know, I can probably get you a deal on with a CDN.

I just wanted to jump in and offer my support if there's anything I can do to help out. We use browscap.ini in our analytics work at Etsy. I wrote a Java library for looking up browsers in Browscap (for use in Hadoop jobs), which is available on GitHub:

https://github.com/rafeco/java-browscap

Please keep us updated on the project's progress.

Thanks!

When do you think you can provide a reliable full_php_browscap.ini
We rely a lot on it on various of our websites and the one we actually have on our server is from September 2012...

Do you have a dead end date for a delivery ? :)

Good luck ! Can't wait for the rebirth day of the project

Rafe Colburn,

Thank you for the offer of support as well as letting me know about how you use it.

Jay P,

I do not have a date for the next revision of the files. The current (5015) files are online and hope to have an interum update soon, followed by a more regular schedule.

Tim G,

The project is still alive, but somewhat in hibernation right now.  The latest released files (5015) are available on the temporary site.

Right now I am working on the back end trying to get everything working in a reliable manner.  I might have a "beta" interrum release in the next few weeks (hopefully days.)  I will post more about that here when I get to that point.  Due to various things (including losing my main source of income) it has been tough to get everything where I wanted it to be by now so I would then be set up to work with more volunteers.  I will post updates soon.  For now, the current (5015) files are on the temporary site.

Hi!
I can help supplement the file browscap.ini?

I'm working on service statistics, I'll see what useragent string is not there.

For example there is no Chrome 23-25, Opera Mini 7-9...

Hello all,
I'm really excited to see that there is still life in this project :)

RIght now I need to get my site working with browsers newer then the August version of the ini file. Do we have an ETA for an updated file? or am i better off just updating it manually and setting the version number higher?

Cheers, and thanks for the effort you are all putting in to get this thing back into service :)

While not everything is back online and the final domain is not active, I hope to have an update online soon that should cover new browser definitions since the August 2012 (5015) update.

I wish I could be more specific right now, however, I would gather it should be online by this weekend.

I will post a notice here when the site has been updated with new files, so please do not hammer the temporary site trying to see if they are there.

Once everything is back online, you should see updates more often.

New files were generated on Tuesday December 11, 2012.

Version 5016 should be coming online tomorrow Friday, December 14, 2012.

The version date will be Tuesday December 11, 2012 as that was the generation date.

The version number will be 5016.

The temporary site might have a short window of downtime.  I will try to post before and after the actual file updates.

Please verify your scripts and other processes.

Thank you for your patience and assistance.  Special thanks to Gary Keith for all he has done for this project.

Hey moose,

Just wondering if you're going to continue on with this project? I know its volunteer work and appreciate it but since last update there are so many new browser strings and my work is starting to look outdated. Others have offered to take over if you feel over whelmed with it, if it's going to die I will have to start looking else where. You should charge a small monthly fee then you will feel encouraged to keep updating it.

Seems like this ought to be done by way of pull requests as well as issues.

Also, is there any interest in building a suite of unit tests for the file so that we can run regression tests when people submit new browser info?

I've been maintaining my company's browscap for new user agents since the project died. Most of the time it's simply a matter of copying a dozen lines from the browscap.ini file, updating a version number in the patterns and the properties, and pasting the result underneath.

I would be willing to bet there's dozens of other people at other companies doing the same, all repeating the same work.

There's gotta be a better way to collectively update the files than working with some list of thousands of cryptic pattern-specific INI files that was linked on github last time time someone asked about updates. It seems an awfully off-putting way to maintain a couple INI/XML files even if an automatic build process sounds good in theory. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what's required?

Gary K

It was done that way because the original browscap.ini system was created by Microsoft and that's how they did it. And you're right, it was far from ideal — or even logical. :)

I am inclined to agree with you Dan.

When I heard Moose was taking over the project I began imagining a MongoDB back-end to house browser definitions but then using a script to make weekly builds of the updated INI.

Theoretically, users should be able to submit user agent strings that are missing or incorrect for review by core maintainers (notice the plurality there).

While I like GitHub and maintain several Git repositories for work projects I don't feel like it is the right solution to this problem. I believe the IA needs to be reexamined and updated based on what technologies are available today as opposed to what Gary had available when he first began maintaining this project.

I'm willing to throw some weight behind this to make something happen because I find this project to be extremely useful and I'm sure many others would agree.

Just throwing some ideas out there though and I'd be willing to connect with any of your off-list to discuss it further.

I am alive. Doing OK (well, not completely)

Shortly after I took over the Browser Capabilities Project, I lost my source of income so that had cascaded into physical and emotional issues that I haven't been dealing with very well.

I did reply to Gary's email message from earlier today, and will try to reply to the email that has stacked up.

My immediate concern is to get the an update into the system to deal with the new User Agents.

I don't have an ETA right now however, it is my main concern (as at least I have rent paid for the month.. and trying not to deal with bills and food issues nor next months rent at this moment.)

I would like to see the current process up and stable, then look at alternative and improvements.

Thanks to everyone that has been supportive of the BCP, most of all Gary and Joshua Estes.

The latest versions of all of the files are on the temp downloads page.  They have been updated previously (Dec 2012) and I am fully aware that they need to be updated again (and more often.)

The backend technology that was used for this project was running on Microsoft technology that has been since rendered obsolete by Microsoft awhile ago.  I have been working to get it back online so we can have a stable "type-1" updates of the files.

I have been working on it, however, due to various issues (including such as mentioned above) it has been difficult to get the back end back online.

I did ask for some input for new User Agents to be updated and received only a couple responses.  I do happen to receive a lot of private hate mail on the other hand. =/

Moving forward In the long term, yes, there are changes that need to happen and that is discussed on the browscap-dev group.

Hi there
and a HUGE THANK YOU for the new version !!
Indeed, it solved a bad problem which was that when using the "Default Browser", when performing get_browser, the system did return :

Default Browser- V0.0 - Platform: unknown - Name: unknown

Which was a bit annoying as long as most of the people are using their "Default Browser".... !! Now We have got (for FF which is my default browser):

Firefox- V19.0 - Platform: Win7 - Name: PC

Which is much better...

THANKS A LOT TO all the contributor !!We now have A REAL BROWSCAP perfectly working as attended ;)

I wrote a long message and it got "lost" inside of Google Groups. So frustrated.

Here is the short version

I have been working on the site/server/software and have a tentative target date of June 15, 2013 to launch.  The site/server/software uses older technology (10+ years) that is not supported/offered anymore so it has been a challenge getting it up and running.  I did acquire hardware and software that is compatible with the backend.

The goal is to get this project back on track offering releases in a more timely manner, then to work with the browscap-dev group to see how to implement the next big revision of the system, while offering the legacy system along side for as long as it is needed.

Regarding the donations, they do not cover the costs of just running BCP so I am paying out of my pocket to cover the costs.  Considering that I currently make in a month what most of you probably make in a day or two, it is very much a financial strain.

While I do appreciate those few kind messages, the personal attacks I have been getting are not very helpful. Opening up my email today on my birthday was so much fun. I know the release "schedule" sucks. I don't need to hear just how much I suck. I am a consumer of this product as well. It is frustrating not having it work in the way that I would like it to.

There also have been some major bandwidth hogs that I have had to ban.  There is no reason to check thousands of times if there is an update. There is no reason to download the files thousands of times. Your scripts that check should check the version info and only download the files if that has changed. They should check once a day or less in most cases. No reason to use up terabytes of bandwidth for nothing as it does cost to send the same file over and over and over.

If you are supporting hundreds or thousands of sites of your own (or your customers,) I do have some solutions/ideas on how to handle them so you are not overloading the BCP server.

Thank you to those whom have been supportive. For those whom have not, I am sorry, this is even more frustrating/stressful/depressing to me as I am also a user of the BCP.

For those who would like to help, but do not have the financial means at this time, I do have a project that I put aside to work on BCP and would appreciate it if anyone could help me get that completed. It is a PHP/JQuery responsive "admin panel" that consumes JSON formatted status reports from various clients sites and displays the output in a responsive layout. I need the admin page, settings/edit page and status display page completed.  If there is anyone that could assist with that project, it would help me.  I cannot pay someone to do this as my current income does not even cover all my expenses.  If interested, please write to me offline as to not clutter up this group.

Sorry that the better conceived message got lost. It is late here and since my birthday was a bust, I think I need to get some sleep and start over tomorrow.

Sincerely,

R. Moose

Hi Moose,

thank you for your message. I'm sure the majority of the community
behind this project appreciates your words and is eager to support its
development. I myself am one of the developers working on an opensource
WordPress analytics plugin, WP SlimStat, which heavily relies on
browscap to capture all the information about visitors' browsers. We
have a mixed system in place, which uses a heuristic detection engine
when no match is found in browscap.

We use jsdelivr as our CDN partner to serve the javascript tracking
code, and I was wondering if Browscap could leverage their free hosting
service as a repository where to keep the files that users will
download. This could make a huge difference in the long run, and benefit
jsdeliver as well, given the wide popularity of Browscap. A monthly
limit on the number of requests could be put in place, to avoid
'bandwidth hogs'. Premium/platinum plans could be implemented to allow
people to pay and get a higher limit of the number of requests they can
perform. Something similar to what geolocation companies do with their
databases (i.e. MaxMind or Neustar).

Other business models, with various levels of accuracy, could be used,
to make this project even more popular and attract new supporters.

What is needed, on the other side, is a more flexible way of updating
the database. Something that encourages participation, is not
cumbersome, and relies on open standards like github. I can't wait till
June 15 comes, to see what you've been working on.

Have you received any feedback about your admin panel? I would love to
know more about it...

Thank you again for all your hard work and... happy birthday!

Dino.

Update...

Still busy working on BCP

Haven't gotten any direct emails about my personal project that I was hoping to get going to have some sort of income.

The PayPal widget got discontinued by PayPal Labs so it wasn't updating so a standard donate button was added. I am concentrating on BCP right now and once we are back up and running smoothly, we can look into other donation options. Any donations are welcomed to keep the project online (and well, right now are desperately needed.).

After firing up the box that I had from 10+ years ago, I am amazed at the speed difference.  This box of mine is basically to get the previous site stable so it can be moved to newer (yet similar) tech.  After the site is running again, then to look into moving to existing tech for the future. That part of the discussion will take place at browscap-dev group.

On track, however I wish everything was on time =/

Still busy working, however, it isn't going to launch today (Sat June 15) as I had hoped however I did want to update.

I am going to be offline for the next 15 hours, and then heading back into it. Will post an update again soon.

Also... Thanks to those few who did donate. It helps.

It helps for what no updates? Get real man quit wasting peoples time. If your not going to take care of this project I vote for someone else to do it. If you choose not to give up the project and keep neglecting it, I recommend someone start a new project using the same old browser strings and add to it. Hell I may just do that myself.
