Job description

Summary:

iRobot design employs a user-­centered design approach in order to optimize business strategies, build our brand, develop rich experiences, and ensure user satisfaction. Our group is responsible for defining the physical and digital experiences of iRobot. The Principal Design Researcher will apply skills in advanced research methods to the design of various new products and experiences.

Essential Functions/ Job Duties:
  • Works as part of a multidisciplinary team to design a product and further our basic research and understandings of users.
  • Further the quality and influence of our research practice as well as iRobot’s general understanding of consumers to inform future products, software, services and ecosystem.
  • Work collaboratively with teams to identify business questions and research needs throughout the product development process, from concept phase to post­-launch.
  • Design and conduct user research using qualitative and quantitative methods as appropriate, including but not limited to rapid and iterative usability and concept testing, participatory design, ethnography, contextual inquiry, surveys, and summative usability studies.
  • Work with the design team to create tangible design solutions and inform prototype development.
  • Serve as a primary consultant on consumer understanding and behavior through iRobot’s various business, technology and marketing teams.
  • Transfer knowledge to internal teams and leadership via workshops and well­-articulated reports/presentations

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience designing, executing, and reporting advanced design research
  • A Masters or PhD degree in a design research­-related field: interaction design, human factors, psychology, etc.
  • Highly skilled in a range of research methods, with demonstrated experience designing and conducting different types of user-­research studies, including usability studies, heuristic and expert reviews, field studies, ethnography and participatory design methods.
  • English proficiency (written and spoken) required
  • Strong oral, written and presentation communication skills; can present findings concisely and effectively. Able to drive common understanding with cross­-functional work partners and senior management.
  • Ability to work as part of a cross­-functional team with limited supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly build strong relationships within and across organizations.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience researching and designing both physical and digital products and web interaction a plus
  • Experience with product design research
  • Experience leading teams and other researchers or designers (formally or informally)
