Scotland's post-devolution "gay agenda" evolves;
Mardi Gras 23 brings out half-a-million in Sydney, Vermont House committee

up against discrimination, why Tallulah was non-grata in Britain,
and other LGBT news from around the world
* In NewsWrap: The 23rd Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras brings out a
half-million in spite of cold weather and Church condemnations... McCain
slams religious right presidential politics, and Gore and Bradley agree...
the Vermont House committee charged with fulfilling the state Supreme Court's
marriage equality edict approves a "civil union" draft, while a Rhode Island
legislative committee hears support for civil marriage... Ontario's Human
Rights Commission tightens anti-harassment protections on the job and fines a
born-again printer for discrimination... newly-revealed papers describe the
British Home Office's failed efforts to deport the "ambisexual" Tallulah
Bankhead... and other LGBT news from around the world [written by CINDY
FRIEDMAN and anchored by LEO GARCIA & CINDY FRIEDMAN].
* The Scottish Executive's efforts to repeal Section 28, the Thatcher-era law
prohibiting local governments and schools from "promoting" homosexuality, has
been greeted with enthusiasm by activists. But that's not all that's on
Scotland's "gay agenda," according to the Equality Network's TIM HOPKINS in a
late January interview with MVS (Amsterdam) Radio's JULIE CARVER.
* A highly anticipated new film from Paramount, "THE NEXT BEST THING,"
combines the talents of a gay academy award winning director, a critically
acclaimed gay leading man, and one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, to
tell the story of an accidental alternative family. The serio-comic offering
has been hailed by some as a sympathetic look at gay parenting, but others
see it as the proverbial train wreck from which you just can't look away.
This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE weighs in with his opinion, and talks to JOHN
SCHLESINGER, RUPERT EVERETT, and MADONNA for their take on it (with a scene
and music from the movie).
