Sounds good. If its below £600 I'll parallel build one for myself, too, I think. Swapable plasma head FTW!

Thinking of which, is the BCA laser back on-line now?

It wasn't as of last week but they had done a test pattern on your
laminate.

Brilliant. Was it good? I'll see on Wednesday anyway, but that laminate should be amazingly stable dimensionally and very solid.

Though: Build two, and fit one with a plasma cutting head for metalwork! (I have a portable {luggable} plasma cutter which could be lent, or fitted to my build)

They have left a note about some nasty fumes, also weirdly they
lasered the back rather than the front....

Angus would you mind looking at the BOM and costing?

Planning to have a look at the BOM tomorrow evening. Thought we'd better agree we are going to build at designed size and ensure that there is room for an appropriate laser tube first.

Just to say I'm here, now.

I'll open up at 6, in case of traffic wardens!

As a group project, we need to have a look at some form of ACnode. This is access control for plug sockets, basically. ACnode is what London HackSpace call their proto-system, and we will need the same sort of thing.

This would allow us to limit machine use (& abuse) to those who have been SHE inducted to use it. Definately needed for laser cutters and lathes!

We never actually went into the BOM, though we did decide that building two was a good idea, one with the regular size and the laser as per the buildlog page, and a second the same size with a different cutter head (plasma cutter)

Looking at it now, we need quite a bit of the extrusion. The stuff in the BOM is all 2020 extrusion per http://us.misumi-ec.com/vona2/detail/110302368740/ and the KJN stuff seems to be exactly the same. however, could someone doublecheck the amount we need? I make it a mindblowing 156.68 meters of it! Hang on - power of ten out there. Ok, 15.668 metres. Still quite a lot. Also 1.92 metres of a 20x40 section. Might be worth working out if we can just weld/braze two lengths of 20x20 together, or bolting them somehow? (Scratch that, we use the cheaper Bosch profile)

Also, is it ITM or Bosch profile people are using? The Bosch Rexroth ones have both the 20x20 and 20x40 style, so probably that one, right? Also, it is cheaper per length.

Going with the Bosch, I get a profile cost of about £65.

The BOM wants Makerslide and Delrin wheels. We either have to order those, or we could go with the Bosch sliders, which would require a bit of a design tweak, but would likely give very good dimensional stability. Sadly the PDF to get some technical details on this is missing from their server. However, there would be far fewer parts and likely less wobble with the sliders. If they are UHMWPE, then the friction is low enough that it might as well be on wheels, but I'll email them and ask for the technical info before we can make a decision.

I'm going to print some of these diagrams out so I can get a better idea of where I can improve the design, before I order any materials.

Ahh you guys have started on this project :-(

I'm still struggling to make the meets.

Tom, any luck setting up the Google Hangouts as we discussed sometime back ?

This is starting to get pretty exiting!! Has anyone worked out an approximate cost for a complete machine? On the BOM page is says just over $800 however that may have changed for better or worse! Might build myself one if its in my limited price range!

I was impressed by the price of the extrusions and the finish was really nice too. Those nuts were really cleaver dispute being a bit pricey.

It might be a good idea if we look closely at the BOM on Wednesday and decide on what we will need. Is the plan still to make it as per the design? Also if anyone has already got parts or know of some good suppliers then this might be something good to discuss. I've got a few bits that might be useful as surplus from my Ultimaker.

Cheers, Jack

No idea for how much it will cost, yet. The cost of the laser system is going to be the biggest part for the group. I've already got the plasma cutter so that's not an issue. I've got quite a few steppers and a hell of a lot of bits of things that can be used.

Also, I'm looking at a bit of a redesign - there's no reason to use the design exactly as they've done it, and I think it can be done better and cheaper quite easily.

As I say, I want to print out the design so I can get my head around it entirely, in the next day or so. I'll also work on the BOM for the UK.

(Currently, I'm meant to be clearing out the attic. I'll be bringing a ton of stuff along in the next few weeks - cables, old PC bits (RAM, drives, cards, etc.), odd bits of stuff. Some will be useful for this project, as well as others.)

Ok, sliding elements (pillow blocks) will be cheaper than the wheels-on-Makerslide system shown on this laser thing. UHMWPE blocks with steel rods through them work well, but I found this useful way of making a sliding arrangement to suit the extrusion type frames: http://www.contraptor.org/make-sliding-elements There is also a very simple guide to making a wheeled system. However, wheels tend not to be as good as they can slop about on the axle, and the axle can slop about, which can add up to far more than pillow blocks ever would. (Loading shouldn't be an issue here.)

Thoughts?

I have been going through similar thought processes with my second MendelMax. It becomes obvious that some form of encapsulated LM10UU on a hardened rod provides much less friction than the oilite bearings we started with. I'm not sure linear slide and cars/wheels is at all necessary in lightly loaded systems and with the laser we are moving light beams (OK mirrors) rather than the workpiece.

Right, I'm going to start putting this order for the extrusion together, with a view to getting it ordered on Thursday, so I can bring it next week (looking after Morgan tomorrow) Which gives you all a day and a meet-up to decide if you want anything added on.

I'll go back through the thread and add everything mentioned so far.

If we can get the wiki cleaned up, then it would probably be useful for this. Or, we could start a new Trello board?

I don't think the mailing list is ideal for a group project, but it will do for now I guess. I'm going to start a new thread.
