Hi everyone,

Can someone please recommend a good / cheap place to get plywood suitable for last cutting?

Thanks,

Sarah

Plywood is pretty cheap either way. I grabbed a sheet of 3.6mm from B&Q, it was about £4. There's about 50 different types, B&Q have basically only 3 in the thicknesses we can cut, if we only look at the exterior grade, but I went for their standard 3.6mm 3-ply exterior grade. Look through the sheets and find the one with the best finish on one side. It's cheaper per unit area if you buy the bigger sheets, but you then need to cut them down to get them in your car.

You can try any timber merchant, they will have a stock available.

I've hit upon an idea. I'm going to cut thin plywood, and form it into both boxsection (using tabbed cuts and Gorilla Glue) and thicker bits (by cutting the same part multiple times then gluing them together)

This should make for amazingly strong & robust parts for cheap. Also, internal layers of ply can be made to have (deliberate) voids, so making things lighter than ply alone would be. Plus scratty bits with rough finishes could be used up as an internal layer.

This also leaves the way clear to make a 'smart' material with, perhaps, sensors inside, or magnets and/or iron, which could be completely invisible once the wood was finished.

Good if you've a low power laser cutter, too.
