Hey guys,

I want to buy a bit of aluminium extrusion to use for the frame of my Rostock (which would be more like a Kossel if it gets an aluminum frame) and to have lying around for general projects. But there's a lot of choice, I was looking here http://www.aluminium-profile.co.uk/acatalog/Aluminium_Profile.html and was already bewildered by the possibilities.

I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on aluminium extrusion in general, a good general purpose size, things to consider when choosing etc.

And if anyone else wants some too, we could split the order.

Thanks,

Tom

Personally always use http://www.minitec.co.uk/

Great stuff.

I'd be interested Tom. No intended use for at the moment but would be good to have some lying around.

I think my MendelMax has 20x20, I'll try and remember to confirm that.

Im more in need of some T Slot nuts that go into the grooves.

I assume these would be supplied by the same source as the extrusions ?

Thing I like about the minitec is they have pretty much any adaptor/
hinge etc you could ever want plus the profile has 4 "pressed air"
chambers so you can easily use pneumatics with it.

I've looked at that one Gareth mentioned, it looks good and is UK based which is nice. The website gives no indication of price though, and I know these systems can be scary expensive. There's loads of different extruded section systems like this now, running from 10x10 up.

Are the connectors reasonably priced? What's the per metre cost of the extrusion?

I certainly want some, and Minitec seems quite good - I just hope their product is better than their video/sound engineer!

Sorry to come late to the party.

I used kjn (http://www.kjnltd.co.uk/aluminium_profile.html) for my 20*20mm extrusions for my Mendelmax

It's currently priced at £2.90 per metre ex vat; it cost me about £18 for the bits I needed a year ago, ready cut to size

The snazzy twist-in T-nuts that they sell are a bit eye-watering at 30p each, and they had a minimum carriage charge of £12.99 so it's as well to be sure you have everything you need in the first order. In fact if I recall correctly that's why I ended up with the extrusions for a second printer.

Provided you don't mind sliding your nuts in before the joint goes together (!), M4 half nuts work pretty well.

Quite a few of these systems use ludicrously expensive nuts where a regular nut would do fine. There are a few that use regular bits though. I don't mind spending for a benefit, but here it seems to be they just want to make on their special nuts with the side ground off.

Still, I need to pick a system and buy some. I missed the London Hackspace group buy. :-(
