Hi Armando

As BigBlueButton developers we haven't tried to install it in Ubuntu 14.04

The current version of BigBlueButton, 0.81, works with Ubuntu 10.04.For the next release of BigBlueButton we will be using Ubuntu 12.04

Any attempt of using any other version may show errors we are not familiar with.

Now our efforts are focused on the next release using  Ubuntu 12.04

Hi Diego,

We're working on the install for Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit as part of the next release (BigBlueButton 0.9.0).

We're also testing builds of 0.9.0-dev on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit as well.

Given the following

1.  We're still in development of BigBlueButton 0.9.0 and have not yet reached beta
2.  Ubuntu 14.04 will be widely adopted by many of the hosting vendors by the time we reach beta (still many weeks ahead).

then what does the community think of skipping Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit support for BigBlueButton 0.9.0-beta (and beyond) and focusing on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit?

Feedback welcome!

Regards,... Fred

Hi Fred.

I think it is best to stay on 12.04 unless there is something specific
that 14.04 gives you.

12.04 is well tested and it would be on all hosting providers. We are
thinking about using Azure and I am not sure how long it is going to
take before they get a validated image.

Hi all,

I think it would be actually better to skip Ubuntu 12.04 and focus on 14.04. The reason is simple that were would be set for years to come and could focus on other things then OS.

The release cycle for ubuntu supports this approach. We would have at least a year for hardware & maintenance updates and after that at least 3 years for maintance updates (http://assets.ubuntu.com/sites/ubuntu/1037/u/img/graphs/image-release-cycle-small.png). Regarding the fact there are bigger things to come (HTML5 Client) which will probably take some versions to reach the level of excellence (yes excellence!) bbb got right now.

For those bound to a Ubuntu 12.04, I could deliver a installation manual to get bbb 0.81 to get it running "by hand" (which actually means most of the stuff still comes from repository).

Mitja
