Hi Alex,

We'd like to reproduce the problem.

Can you post the output of

   sudo bbb-conf --check

How long do you share webcams before the video freezes or users are disconnected?  Is the problem repeatable?  If so, can you give us the steps to repeat ... which might just be connect with 10 users, but it will be easier for us to duplicate if the problem is repeatable following a given set of steps.

Hi Alex,

We've opened an issue for this

We won't be trying to reproduce/fix this in 0.80 as we're nearing the end of 0.81 development.  Instead, we'll test this in 0.81 and see if the problem still remains and, if so, figure out how to fix it.  We're using a later version of red5 in 0.81.

Thanks again for reporting this.

Hi Fred,

we are propably facing the same bug with the latest build of BBB. It has occured two times so far.
The first time there were about about 16 cameras and the second time there were about 8 cameras.
Both times the problem ocuured at about 1 hour after the start of the meeting.
For some users the video of all others was frozen but the sound was normal for all users.
At the time the problem occured the CPU load on the server was not high and the bandwidth usage was not the bottleneck as far i know.

Some information about the server
BigBlueButton Server 0.81-beta (1341)
BBB is running in a KVM Virtual Machine

I am attaching the debug output. The first freezing (with 16 cameras) occured at 19-6-2013.

We will try to reproduce the problem at the demo version of BBB.

Hi Panagiotis,

We encountered a similar problem when one of the user was using Linux using FireFox, which uses the built-in Flash, which is version Flash 11.2.  We had also turned off the h.264 compression on the server.

What happend was we had three users join, two using Chrome (which runs the latest version of Flash) and one using FireFox on Linux (Flash 11.2).  All users shared 1280x720 webcams.

After about five minutes, all three web cam streams would stop.

In your tests, was there any user accessing BigBlueButton using FireFox on Linux?

Hi Fred,

we are not using Firefox for Linux. We are not using browsers in Linux only Windows. Our server has h264 enabled as in the default.

i have more info on the problem from our tests in the demo BigBlueButton server.
The issue seems to be that the videos are freezing when there is a network problem or high traffic on the client but there is no error or warning to the user. When multiple users joined from the same ADSL connection after some minutes the video of some users started freezing. When a user was transmiting video and he saw all other videos freezing his transmission to the other users had frozen also.
It seems like that the red5 is droping video connections silently and the videos are freezing. Propably the application should detect the timeout in transmission and restart the stream instead of freezing which seems very bad to the user. It seems that even a slight network problem or congestion freezes video streaming both incoming and outgoing. If the user joins the meeting again everything seems fine as the video streams start again.

I hope I have given enough information to detect the bug and correct it. Could you suggest further steps or settings to test in our server? Would lowering video qualitymake a difference?

Regards
Panagiotis

It could be a mis-match between versions of Flash.  Can you describe the clients you were using to connect.

Hi Fred,

the problem is not related to clients using Ubuntu desktop. We are not using Linux clients at all but the problem still occurs as i have described the previous times.
We have once again faced the problem of freezing videos and the problem is exactly the same as it appears in Lee's screenshot.
After the videos freezing we tried logging out and logging in again. After logging in some videos appeared smaller than others as you can see in the screenshot attached.
The videos that were smaller, appeared smaller to all clients as if the streaming server was sending them smaller to all clients.
Reducing the quality to 70% made no difference.
After logging in again, some of the videos broadcasted did not appear in the video dock. It was possible to open them by clicking the video button in the participant list.

I think that it is a serious bug that needs to be solved before the 0.81 release.

Please inform us what tests to run to help solve this bug.

My LAN speed is 100Mbps. While testing with version 0.81 in the conference for about 3 hours, more than half the clients (8/15) are freeze. In this case, video is freeze, audio failed Continuous. So these clients have to log out and log in again.
Version 0.81 is really fantastic. So you should fix this problem soon.

Hi Le,

OK.  We've just tried 10 users connected to a BigBlueButton server on our LAN and, after three hours, they are still working.

So, just to remove any differences, can you update your 0.81-beta server to the latest packages

  sudo apt-get update

and test again on your end.  We're *very* interested to see if you still encounter the same issues.

We've used the latest build of BigBlueButton 0.81-beta.  This really shouldn't make a difference, but we didn't see any disconnects or problems with video with ten users.  You can update your server

Hi Fred,
I think the problem is not related to using an old version of BigBlueButtton. During all the times that we have encountered the problem we were using the latest beta version. Besides that we have encountered the problem in the demo server that is always to the latest version. The only difference in the official demo server is that the video was freezing but no videos were appearing smaller than the other. Maybe it was the fact that in the demo server we used only 7-8 cameras and not 15 or more.
In real conditions users are joining and leaving the session. Maybe that makes a difference from using ten cameras from the start and having them open for many hours.
The fact that in most cases it happens after about 1 hour maybe is related to some buffer of red5.
To help locate the bug I am attaching the output of bbb-conf –debug the last time the problem occurred.
I hope it helps.

Hi Fred

The users are all using ADSL connections. The ADSL lines are 24Mbps/1Mbps (download/upload) but real ADSL speed is usually around 10-15 Mbps download and 1Mbps upload.
Watching the server traffic with iptraf I could see that the total outgoing traffic was a little higher than 5Mbps. If that is distributed to all the clients I suppose that each client receives less than 0.5Mbps. Am I right?
I suppose that a network problem could cause the freezing of the videos but I don’t know if that would result in some video starting smaller than others as it shows in the screenshots. In the case of a LAN I could be a hardware network error (the freezing) but in our case there is no central switch as we are all connected through ADSL lines. We were also constantly pinging Google at the time of the test and at the moment the video froze there was no interruption in the ping packets. One more thing is that the sound at the time the videos were frozen was ok. I suppose a network problem would create problems to the sound that flows through the network.
I believe that it is a software bug maybe in the red5 streaming server or BigBlueButton. Maybe it is related to network conditions but the network alone is not the problem. Even if the network connection drops the software should handle it some way (I think previous versions of BigBlueButton and probably 0.81 showed a message Reconnecting to the Server when it detected network disconnection. Maybe now the video module cannot handle network problems and freezes or shows smaller videos instead of showing some message or restarting the stream. Also the problem of smaller videos is there even if the client logs out and logs in again.
Is there a build of red5 that is newer than the one currently in 0.81 beta? Could the open issue 325 in red5 http://code.google.com/p/red5/issues/detail?id=325 be related?

Hi Patagiotis,

We need to do more testing on our end.  I've also decided we will not delay the release of 0.81 to fix this issue.  My reasons are below.

BigBlueButton (specifically red5) has been working well with multiple webcams.  We've seen many meetings proceed with less than 10 webcams without issues.  We're not saying it's perfect.  When a user connects via Ubuntu Desktop using FireFox (Flash 11.2) and broadcasts a webcam HD, the video will stop after a few moments, see

This is an edge case, but a valid bug nevertheless.

For your scenario, we also suspect, as you do, the problem is within red5 and/or the Flash player on how it buffers data.

We worked quite closely with the red5 team earlier this year to upgrade BigBlueButton to the latest build.  Many bugs were fixed, in both products, and we believe we helped improve the support in red5 for RTMPT, see

Red5 is at the core of BigBlueButton.  For stability, we've frozen our version of red5 now for three months to create and test a stable build of BigBlueButton for release.

At the moment, we're thirteen months into development of the release of 0.81.  We could hold up this release and begin another round of testing and updates to red5, but it means we would release of 0.81 would be near end of 2013, as opposed to releasing much sooner.

Our goal for 0.81 it to make it better than 0.80 in terms of stability, usability, and features (in that order).  We have fixed over 150 issues since 0.80, and the is a large community of BigBlueButton users (many of which share only a few webcams during of session) who stand to benefit from those improvements when we release.

So, we're going to defer resolving this webcam issue until the next release, when we can upgrade to the latest version of red5 and do another full round of testing -- with emphasis on use of many webcams.

This doesn't mean we're going to stop testing and gathering more data, but our focus now is on finishing this release so the entire community can benefit.

Warm regards,... Fred

Hi Patagiotis,

We've completed more testing on Friday with regards to reproducing the video freezing.  So far, with the latest build of BigBlueButton 0.81-beta, we were able to hold two sessions with more than ten users over an hour..

In the first test, we had 16 users connect over the internet to a remote server.  The users were in Canada, Brazil, and Ecuador.  The server was in North America.  We left the webcams running for 3+ hours and the sessions remained stable.  See image capture below.

Inline image 1

After a few hours most of us left.  However, I just logged in now (about 35+ hours after we started the test), and two webcams were still broadcasting.

In the second test, we monitored an on-line class by Howard Rheingold (a digital media author) who used BigBlueButton to teach fourteen students with webcams.  The class ran for 1.5 hours.  We didn't detect any user problems with the webcams.  See

Patagiotis, despite the positive results above, you are clearly encountering issues on your end.   In an earlier message you had written

Both times the problem occurred at about 1 hour after the start of the meeting.

Is your BigBlueButton server behind a firewall?   It seems odd that both times the problems occurred after one hour.  As you postulated, the problem could also be a combination of buffers in red5.

We plan to upgrade to the latest build of red5 after the release of 0.81.  Right now, we're probably about four months behind, but again that's by choice so we could have a stable platform on which to test.

Thanks again for sharing the information Patagiotis!

Regards,... Fred

Hi Anil,

Thanks for doing this test!  I was able to login a few minutes ago and saw the same as you did.

It might be that your upstream network was saturated with all the webcams.   Question: do you have a BigBlueButton server within your LAN that you can repeat the test?

Again, thanks for sharing this!

Could the issue be some sort of Flash exception? If there's a computer that it freezes up on consistently it might be worth it to download the debug version of Flash and see if any exceptions pop up. If you want to try downloading the debug version of Flash you can get it here, http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html, just make sure to get the correct plugin for whatever browser you're using.

Hi Chand Pilkey,

the issue is not only with single computer is it random it happens with all computers.

Hi Anil,

What happens when you connect 5 computers for 2 hours -- do you see the same problem (is there a threshold)?

We're not going to make any more changes for the upcoming 0.81 release to try and address this issue, and we don't know exactly where the problem is happening, but if we gather more data, then when we start the development cycle for the next release we can update our version of red5 and try re-running the same tests to see if there is an improvement.

Thanks again Anil for sharing this data.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Anil,

Could we ask that you test this problem on our latest build of 0.9.0-dev.

We're getting close to releasing 0.9.0-dev --- which saw major updates to BigBlueButton itself and the underlying OS --- and I've been looking forward to posting a follow-up to this thread and seeing if we've made progress on resolving your issue.

You could use

and one of the sample rooms

to try out with a group of people.  We would be *very* interested in your results.

Hi Fred,

I tested the server with about 18 computers connected to your server on Sat, Aug 23, 2014 at 11:04 PM Indian Time
You can check your servers logs for errors or exception, I am still getting the blank screen on some connection I used safari and  Mozilla on Mac Os Mavericks for testing purpose. Sorry for replying late.
If you want any help please ask.I am also attaching screen shoots of the 2 clients.

Hi Anil,

Thanks for doing the tests! Having 18 webcams is pretty good -- even if a few loose video.  It's a lot of bandwidth to push down to the user.

Would it be possible to do another round of tests with 9 webcams?  It would be half the bandwidth and I'm curious is if affects the stability of the videos.

Regards,.. Fred

18 users, receive 17 cams from each other so that around 300 streams being passed around to all the clients.

Depending on camera resolution a single stream could easily push 450kps if HD with a lot of motion is happening.

The choke point is probably going to the  clients internet connection.  (for example a user at home with 5mb down connection),  or if you are performing all the test within your corporate lan, but the bbb server is external everything is going thru edge router.

You might also exceed the 100mb server connection for large meetings and need a 1GB connection.

One way to test the application and eliminate the network bottle necks, is to create a few cloud images with Ubuntu desktop, and run the entire video stress test in single zone,  you can also use ffmpeg to simulate more video connections to red5. and really get a good handle on stability.

regards,
Stephen

Hi Anil Singh Bafila,

Would you be able to do the same tests again on the most recent version of BigBlueButton 1.1-beta, see

You can also use https://demo.bigbluebutton.org/ for the tests as well.  We would be interested to see if you still get any blank screens.

Recently, we've seen some sessions use BigBlueButton to share over 20 webcams.
