World Of Warcraft - The big box fantasy flight one. Play two
characters. Try to kill the end boss in 15 turns (impossible IMHO) or
less than 30...always my solo of choice...

Ambush! (Victory Games)
D-Day at Omaha (Decision Games)
Where there is discord.

I am currently playing the old Melee/Wizard solo modules with
Heroscape figures and its great system. Reminds me of Ambush! with
the paragraphs.

Non-Wargame:

Arkham Horror is always good.
Ghost Stories

I'm still having great fun with Agricola and At The Gates of Loyang -
I'm only an occasional solo player this year, though.

Alternatively, Gears of War or Space Hulk: Death Angel.

Arkham Horror is solid. I've never actually played it solo, but instead as two characters. Jenny Barnes and Monterey Jack work together particularly well.

Race for the Galaxy's robot AI isn't too shabby, but I think the computer version (http://keldon.net/rftg/) has it beat.

I'm also a fan of Yggdrasil solo.

I have Zombie in my Pocket and it's a good short burst of fun (also,
it's playable with up to eight players which is cool) but my current
favourite solo game is Thunderstone Advance. Lots of variety and it
doesn't feel as if the solo has been tacked on. It works very well and
I know I'll keep coming back to it.

Here, you go: http://lordrahvin.hubpages.com/hub/A-Tarot-Game-Queens-of-Fate

That's an older version of the rules, but it should get you by until
BGG comes back up and you could check out version 1.2, along with some
optional variants.

Much like others, I'm throwing my vote in for the new D&D board games:
Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, and Legend of Drizzt. I
believe Wrath of Ashardalon is the best balanced of the three and I
personally own it and it's a blast. 1-5 players, completely co-op.

Well the PnP version of Zombie in My Pocket is solo only. The retail
version offers multi-player.

Gears of War is my most recent solo purchase and I'm a fan. I also own
all three of D&D board games but I haven't even played Drizzt yet.
While fun, the novelty kind of wore out its welcome. I did pick up
some of the Drizzt books to see if that might inspire me to actually
play it.

What I've been playing solo lately is the old Tunnels & Trolls solo
adventures. The combat mechanic in T&T has a very board game feel to
it. You can pick up a digital "box" set with rules, a solo module, a
GM module, and a few other items for only $15 bucks at drivethru RPG.
A word of warning though, so far most of the solos I've played have
all been insanely brutal. I'm hoping to discover one where every other
monster encountered isn't ridiculously overpowered.

2) ...I can grab off the shelf and solo right now: NOT MAGE KNIGHT.

Is Gears of War significantly better?
I've been thinking of picking up either Legend of Drizzt, Gears of War, Claustrophobia, or Earth Reborn.

Mage Knight, clearly.

Distant second would be Lord of the Rings card game. Space Hulk: Death
Angel is pretty fun after you let the rules accost your eyes.

For me, it is better. Significantly better? Maybe? When I first got
Castle Ravenloft I loved it. Played it frequently solo and
multiplayer. My issue with the newer games is that they are just more
of the same. There is some tweaking here and there, but the fact that
each turn is either a new environment effect or a new monster and a
new environment effect wore thin after awhile. Its possible Drizzt
changed this up a bit as I only skimmed the rules, but I don't recall
any major changes. Gears has a bit more variety with the AI cards, I
just wish there were more of them. My biggest complaint with Gears is
that the AI doesn't have any range limits while you do, and at times,
you'll get swarmed based on the AI card draw.

I thought Claustrophobia was strictly a 2-player game. Does it offer
solo?

I'm not familiar with Earth Reborn.

For me, probably
Arkham Horror
Elder Sign (on my tablet)
Castle Ravenloft etc

And Tsuro. No hand, draw one tile per turn. Make the longest path you
can.

Doh! I have an entire GeekList for solo games!

If you have "Friday" and like deck-building, go for that.
Card game? "Race for the Galaxy" + the first expansion (for solo
play).
Don't have either of those, but have 2d6 handy and can print 2 pages?
Check out Utopia Engine @ http://bit.ly/yQ9ZyU.
