Interestingly, there appears to be a seperate european version
around. I've played (and still enjoy) a similar game called noughts
and crosses that offers worker placement rather than the area control
aspect you describe here.

If you can find a copy I suggest you give it a try, it would be
interesting to see another review comparing the two.

I have a 1983 edition of this game, published by MGM Studios.  Production values on this edition are low.  The rules are very short.  It wasn't clear what the mechanics or strategies are.  All they say is “The only way to win is not to play the game.”

What, it came out in 97 or 98... BC?

On another note, I did a tic-tac-toe game that takes place on a single
line, where the goal is to get 3 in a row on the line.
