L5R Questions

I hope this is kosher. Normally I'd ask on BGG, but... :/

Just played first game of Legend of the Five Rings with my GF. Had some questions.

1. Can actions be responded to? As far as I can tell, it appears not. That seems really strange to me, though. This means that as the attacker, I get to take the first action and I can use a ranged attack to kill a defending enemy personality, and there's nothing my opponent can do about that (besides not sending that personality out into battle in the first place).

2. Do shugenja ever bow when equipping or using spells? I believe not (unless the spell specifically says to bow the performing shugenja). Relatedly, can a shugenja with multiple spells use all of them?

3. The border keep has an ability to put cards from your provinces face down under your deck and refill them faceup. Can I purchase a card, refill that slot face down and then use the border keep to put the face down card at the bottom and refill it face up?

4. Can I use the border keep's ability while it's bowed? Ditto for other holding abilities.

5. Can I split gold amongst cards? E.g. I have two cards that produce 3 gold each; can I bow them both to purchase two cards which cost 4 and 2, or bow them both to purchase three cards which each cost 2?
