I like the picture...it reminds me to be at peace during these difficult times.

My one request would be that they add some sort of estimate for how long it will be down.

I'd link you to a few posts showing my gratuity, but my links would just lead you to the "BGG is down" page. :P

Seriously though, I don't mind the downtime at all. It's been more frequent than normal lately, but I use BGG an unhealthy amount anyway. If anything, I should be thanking BGG for reminding me I need a break once in awhile.

Such estimates are a no-win.  You often really don't know how long it will take.   The end result is people will be more unhappy when you make these guesses.

Also, taking time to try to make such estimates removes resources from actually getting the site back up and running.

I think an explanation of what died and a very broad estimate of how long it would be would be a great gesture.  It's a great idea.

I do not believe that more information would make people less happy.

You do realize that's literally impossible… while the site is actually down?

When it's up? One post? How about 50. How about my '12 Platinum supporter badge. Exactly how much appreciation do you personally believe entitles one to voice an opinion on the occasions that it is not unconditionally positive?

You'd be surprised. Look at Kickstarter for a good example. Setting deadlines sets you up for possibly not meeting deadlines. Perhaps the number of grateful people outnumber the ungrateful, but never underestimate how much more vocal the ungrateful community is.

Don't need a quantifiable amount...I truly believe that if you're someone who's vocally appreciative of the positives of the site, then you're entitled to voice your negative opinions as well. Unfortunately, too many of the people who complain are NOT people who have voiced appreciation...and my initial rant was aimed at them.

Of course, as long as that information is valid.   Unfortunately no one knows how long it is going to take so the best that they can do is guess.   The guess will almost always be wrong and make people less happy.

They already do give a rough description of what went wrong.  They said:

Sorry for the downtime--

A problem related to our ratings calculations has resulted in our subscription system going down (they were stored on the same database). We are working to fix it.

So the downtime is fine to me....the price I pay to use such an otherwise excellent site. And to those complaining, the fact that you keep coming back despite the downtime, just shows that there's more good than bad on BGG....yet where and when have you ever thanked them for the good? Link to one post...just one single post where you showed some semblance of appreciation, then start your diatribe. Until then, go somewhere else.

As far as my one complaint/request...can we change the artwork for the BGG dude when the site is down? I can take the site being offline, but he looks so happy and almost smug...can we at least have some compassion and have him look as sad, alone and neglected as we all feel when the site's down?

Just my two cents :)

AFAIK there isn't any BGG rule which states that for every negative comment you need an equal amount of positive..

No one said anything about a rule...it's called common decency. If all you do in life is complain, then you're an ungrateful jerk. If you thank people for the good, and never complain about the bad, you're a saint. If you thank people but also complain, then you're normal. Feel free to disagree, but just clarify straight out if you're opinion is that it's perfectly fine to only complain about things, without ever showing appreciation.

I don't personally complain more than I praise but if other people want to good luck to them, I'm not going to try stop them. Regarding the OP I agree that the geek looks smug. :p
