Ok I have looked over the situation and I think I have a solution.  See here we have a problem with our beloved BGG.  It doesn't have the necessary funds to operate at maximum efficiency, this causes stress on Aldie, Geek Rage, and downtime problems.

The solution: Get more funding to BGG.  I admit I am partially to blame for this as I have been mooching off the system without donating back for a few years now but I intend to remedy this problem as soon as the site returns.  Who's with me?

Been donating for 5 years and don't intend to stop. It's a measly $30
per year, but it's still something.

I've donated every year since I joined in 2008 and that's not going to change. I donate so that I get adblock as well. If every user donated at least the minimum, I'm sure that would mean a great deal more funds for Aldie et al to utilise for the benefit of all. But like anything that has free membership or voluntary payment, there will be a percentage who will exercise their right and not pay. That's just the way people are.

Don't they have multiple FT peeps working on the site now?  I didn't hear what happened... but I doubt it's money related...  It just happens sometimes, this stuff can be hard.  Unless you spend millions a year for a staff of 30 uber geeks, and event then there's no guarantees.

One idea would be to shift the fund drive to January and have a secondary one (or one for the next year) in December.

Many wait until December to contribute because you get GG only if you donate in December.

No, you are wrong. I donated for 2011 in January 2011 and received the same GG as everyone who donated in the membership drive. Maybe they should give an incentive to those who donate ealier, like free overtext, or something like that.

Yes - everyone who donates during the year gets GG after the supporter
drive.

Cool.  By pledging in December, do we make the amount higher for everyone, or is the amount given the aggregate of all the memberships over the year?

The GG bonus for the year is (has been) based on the number of new
contributions during the membership drive in December. I think it's
possible that some people delay subscribing until then just to drive
up the bonus.
I think it would make more sense in terms of revenue stream to give a
GG kickback to all paying members just like they have been doing,
except to uncouple the bonus calculation from the December membership
drive. Then they could also give out an additional bonus for members
who have never had a patron badge before, or at least who didn't have
one for the previous year. This would serve the purpose of rewarding
loyal members and giving new members an incentive to contribute any
time during the year, not just in December.
For the end-of-year membership push could still happen, but calculate
the GG bonus based on total contributing members for the year, total
new contributors for the year, or total $ of contributions for the
year, instead of "total number of members who contribute in December".
They'd jusy need to see where they are at the end of November, set a
target goal for the end of December, and figure out an incentive if
the goal is reached. Bang, zoom, done.

More money with a different business model.

A "Members Only" section would include trading, selling, etc. Retailers would be subject to higher membership fees, or BGG might take a bigger % after a certain $ limit. Example, if you sell up to $99 = 3%, $100 - 199 = 3.5%, $200-299 = %4, etc. Trades could only be between paid members. Something like that.

The fact is BGG users never had it so good. And that includes retailers.

I've been a supporter in 2008(?), 2009, 2011 and 2012. Financial
issues in 2010 stopped me then. For the $25 a year I give, I get
access to an amazing site for 360 of 365 days per year. :) Seriously,
though, I can block ads, and I support a site which covers my favorite
hobby and for which I probably end up paying no more than 2 1/2 cents
per hour.
