Oh I'm sure we could get the downtime "lower" with more money... I
won't turn it down :)
http://boardgamegeek.com/support
On April 1st, we added 5 new servers to the rack (which was a disaster
- 2 full days of downtime as I recall), and last weekend we added 4
more (down for about 5 hours).
Tonight was needed (5 hours) because I was migrating over some older
VMs to the new machines - I don't know of anyway to do that without
taking down the site. Maybe toss another 10 random hours here and
there...
That's about 68 hours of downtime in 7 months - approximately 98.6% uptime.
Obviously I would love to avoid it completely, but we have a lot more
moving parts than many websites out there and we do it with a limited
budget and one IT person (me).
We aren't a static webpage/forums site. Every single thing is
dynamically generated and cached out. I'll diagram out what kind of
things we use to run the site at some point to show people how things
work here.
If it wasn't for that disaster in April - we'd have nearly 99.6%
uptime... just to put it in perspective.
Sorry for the inconvenience. Have fun on the site now! It's back up.
