Hello All,

New to the group. I wanted to buy a bicycle to cycle to work The
details are:

- Office To and Fro - 12 Kms per day.

- Weekends - Maybe max of 30 Kms

- Budget - Max of 10 K all inclusive.. (Helmet / Blinkers / Lock /
Bell / Pants Belt-Near Ankle)

I went to a BSA Hercules shop. The one I liked was a Hercules A100.
They said that the Cost was 9,000/- The accessories would cost approx
- Rs.1,000 as follows:

Helmet - Kawasaki - Rs:350
Blinkers: - Rs.150
Lock - Rs. 100
Bell: Rs. 100
Pants Belt-Near Ankle : No Idea

My doubts:
1. Is this the correct bike for me?

2. This bike has front disc brakes. How difficult is the maintenance,
etc. for front disc brakes? And in the case of a front tyre puncture?

3. This bike is 21 Speed. I would be happy with a 5 or 6 speed. How
difficult is the maintenance, etc. for a 21 speed? Does the chain come
off / break, etc?

The shop guys said that I should take it to them for service every 6
months for break alignment, etc. The cost of which is Rs. 250 (Per six
months).

Regards,
Boney

Do not buy that bike. You don't need suspension and will not get a decent suspension at that price. It will only make your bike heaver and harder to pedal. This bike is much better suited to your needs http://www.playgroundonline.com/products/Btwin+-+ROCKRIDER+5.0+(MAN)/9243.aspx

I could not locate it on the Decathlon website but I imagine they have it in store. Check them out on Sarjapur Road.

Arvind

I feel the best bike for you rightnow is act110, hercules. I had one and its awesome startup bike.
i suggest you inquire the price in other shops too. its cheaper in other shops.

you will surely need 21speed, its just the combination of  gears and will be very helpful.

And need not worry of chain coming out, and dont bother too much on service too. it will hardly cost you anythng.

Happy cycling and surely you will upgrade if you fall in love with cycling..

Thanks Arvind, Vijay and Pradeep. looked at the images of ACT110 and
liked it. Want to go to a shop and check it out.

Just a few questions:

1. I know one shop .i.e. the BSA shop in Marathahalli junction. Is
that the right place to buy the bike from or would you suggest some
other better shop?

2. Am not sure if they are called flaps or something. Need them on the
two tyres so that water does not come up from the tyres on to me.
Would I need to buy them separately for this bike?

3. The approximate price of the accessories. Does it look right?

The reason I don't generally recommend ACT 110 is that it comes in only one size. If it fits you well, great. Educate yourself on how a cycle should fit before you make your purchase.
I prefer this horn to a bell. Gets more attention for sure. http://www.decathlon.in/Cycling-Accessories-HORN Rs. 125 (member price)
Trouser clips are Rs. 95 (member price) http://www.decathlon.in/Cycling-Trousers-TROUSERS-CLIPS

You can get that bike at RR cycles, Next to little champs or Karnataka
Cycle mart, first floor above woodlands.
In case you are tempted to go for a higher valued bike then come back
here and seek opinions. DO NOT listen to what those guys say! Both
suck in servicing.

Q: is RR cycle in madivala a good place to give my bike for servicing?
Ans: No!

@OP: The Act 110 is known for seatpost problems. Plus, at that price I
still think the RR 5.0 and 5.1 are better buys.

End of the day, its your call.

Cheers,

Rahul

I had seen the 2011 Model of Act 110 ... Has anyone faced the seatpost
problem in this model?

Also, going by the site the price of a RR 5.0 is around 9.5K. Would
like to know the price of a Schwinn Hybrid..

RR 5.0 is Rs.8500 at this site.

The Decathlon website seems to be out of cycles. You may want to check
in-store.

My friend recently wanted to buy an ACT110. RR quoted 7.5k
I vaguely think he mentioned the size as an 18. I do not remember.
I inspected the seatpost and to me at least something does not sit
right (pun intended). Most other bikes have a solid joint (moulded/
screwed on) between the seat post rod and the rest of the seat post
assembly. In the ACT110 we saw, it had two lateral welds that looked
weaker. I do not know if this is the seatpost problem mentioned by
others, but maybe you want to check it.
My personal opinion : Spend a little more and get a better bike in the
15k-20k range. And get it sized properly. It will pay off in the
longer run.
