How to display tamil text in website in different fonts?

How to display tamil text in websites in different unicode fonts? I use www.fontsquirrel.com to convert normal fonts to webfont and embed in a website. And I have downloaded the unicode fonts by Ila.Sundaram and converted to webfont by the previous said procedure and embedded in the site. But the tamil text are been displayed in the default font only. I could not see any differences in the website. Any ideas?

Please read below the mail correspondences between me and Mr. Navarajan (webmaster of www.anbinmadal.org). As you can see, he has succeeded to a very good extent in showing web page contents in different Unicode font styles in various browsers. You can contact him directly for knowing further details on the methodologies adopted by him.

 

Meanwhile, I have requested Mr. Navarajan to email his efforts as an article to our group (if he has no problems in joining our group) AND/OR post about it in his website so that I can give a link to that page in http://azhagi.com/free1.html which will benefit many others who are in great need to show web page contents in different unicode font styles. 

 

Today morning, when we were talking, Mr. Navarajan told that he has no problems in me sharing the following mail correspondences with our group. He also informed that for IE8 and below (in which the contents appear still in default Latha font only) alone, he will use the traditional ".eot" format - work for which he will finish at some point of time in future.

 

In his recent mail to me today, he had suggested me to see the link http://www.anbinmadal.org/dailyword/dailywords.html. When I visited this page, I was able to see Unicode texts in different unicode font styles in both google chrome and firefox, but not in IE8 (as already mentioned by Mr. Navarajan).

First of all, my very sincere applause, from the bottom of my heart, for your perseverance. Great...........................

 

I just gave a quick test and the Tamil texts were visible in my chrome, firefox and IE browsers correctly (i.e. in different styles). I don't think I have those fonts installed in my system

 

Kindly please explore further and post a few more test pages (in some very rarely used unicode fonts) and I will test them out and let you know. If this works out well and if you receive feedback from many others too that they are visible in different styles in the 3 major browsers (chrome, firefox, IE), then I can confidently write about this method in my http://azhagi.com/free1.html page and give your webpage itself as an example for all those website designers who are in EXTREME need for showing Unicode in various styles in their web pages.

 

By the by, kindly have a look at this page - http://dev.w3.org/html5/spec-preview/the-style-element.html - for an information on the @font-face rule. Probably you have already read it. Anyway, just sharing.

 

One more thing. Can I forward your mails below (as they are) to Mr. A K Rajagopalan (Mr AKR, for short), editor of www.mazhalaigal.com and a great well-wisher of azhagi, so that he can also try out and let me know his findings. Please confirm for this at the earliest so that Mr AKR can also try out and have his web pages in different styles. I am sure he will be interested to show his pages or paragraphs in different styels.

Due to time constraint and certain other factors, I am unable to reply in detail. 

 

In short, in whichever Unicode font (for e.g. Arial Unicode MS^ or Tscu_SaiIndra#) you email your Tamil text, if that font is available in the receiver's system, he/she will see your Tamil text in that font itself*. Otherwise, receiver will see it in default## Tamil font (Latha or Vijaya) only.

 

(*) Exceptions might arise but I am not going into the details, as mentioned at the start of this mail.

 

(#) Tscu_SaiIndira - If you are not aware yet, Tscu_SaiIndira is a Unicode font. It can be very well used for one's Unicode typing, printing and publishing needs. It gets installed automatically along with 'Azhagi'. It is downloadable individually also from http://azhagi.com/freefonts.html. Please see point 2 in https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/azhagi/Tscu_SaiIndira/azhagi/-Qauwbk7Cl0/cxunvpfvLYUJ [Users' doubts - 10 (Unicode Fonts Lister, TSCu_SaiIndira)] for additional details on Tscu_SaiIndira.

I just browsed through the link you have sent. They have given a methodology for English fonts. I did not try it out, even for English fonts.

 

So, whether the methodology works for Tamil Unicode fonts has to be tested out by Sri Ananthanarayanan sir or you or any other member only, as and when time/interest permits. The findings of the tests (as and when they happen) may be kindly shared in our group so that those interested can act according to those findings.
