Here at Duquesne we are looking for a good writable monitor for our classrooms.  Also we need whiteboard software.

We have a couple rooms where whiteboards are not very practical.  I am wondering;

1.       Does anyone out there have any recommendations on writable monitors they have used in classroom?

2.       What software are you using.

We have tried some low end monitors, the SMART podium interactive display, and a Sharp LL-S201A.

The SMART works nice but the price is crazy and now the new software requires a yearly license fee.

The low end just is not good.

The sharp at $650 is a decent price point and seems to work well but needs recalibrate every time the computer is restarted.

As for software we have tried the SMART Notebook and a free whiteboard software.

I looking forward to hearing what others maybe using OR what you have tried.

Thanks

Todd

How about writing in OneNote on an all-in-one touchscreen PC?

We’ve used a lot of the SMART monitors over the last few years, but we’re now looking for a lower cost option w/o yearly licensing of software.  Our education faculty might stick w/ SMART ‘cause the local school boards have a lot of SMART gear, and it’s always good to teach the future teachers on the gear they’ll be using.  However, the school boards might not like the new licensing policy.

I’ll be checking to see what responses you get from the rest of the group.

Todd-

Not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for, but we are starting to use an application called Doceri.  It is $30 and runs on an iPad.  The iPad connects (very easily) to either a mac or pc.  The ipad is then the writing surface.

It is working REALLY well, and is very cost effective.

We just deployed a few rooms with standard touch monitors (Dell 23" touch displays - $400ish) and for annotation, we're using software called Ink2go ($20). http://ink2go.org It's a bit basic, but does the job without the huge expense of of SMART Sympodiums and their software licensing (Now even more draconian!").

Thanks Scott

I have tried Doceri and I like it but they faculty wants something they can write on at the podium.  The complaints that I have heard about the ipad is size.

Chris

Thanks for sharing.  I will look into ink2go.

What are your faculty writing with?  Fingers Stylus?  Have you had much feedback from the faculty?  One thing we have heard from faculty is the touch screen leaves marks when using a stylus and accidentally touching the screen something SMART does not do.

Thanks

Todd

Hi Todd,

The few faculty who are starting to explore annotations are using their fingers (because they can't lose them).  I suppose they could use a stylus but at this point, it's an experiment to see how annotation might be used.

Give them time, eventually they’ll figure out how to do that.

Hi There,

Sharp makes a 20 inch interactive display Model #: LL-S201A, MSRP $700.  We don’t have one here so I can’t vouch for it but it might be worth a look.

We have started using the Dell touch monitors as well and use Workspace by TurningTechnologies (formerly Einstruction).  We've also had success making our own stylus for these using small diameter copper tubing and the static foam that IC chips are shipped in.

Thanks.  This is the monitor we are using at the moment in our one classroom.  The monitor is great but calibration is an issue.  It seems to keep losing calibration when the computer restarts.

We use the hitachi starboard. It works great for annotating PowerPoint, word, excel, browser, or for writing on a blank page. It uses a stylus, it could've been designed better, but works great.

Frequently used with our ACCT, Fin, Stat professors.

We're about to get the smartboard and will let you know how it works.

Our latest foray into annotation incorporates Wacom's DTK-2241 (HDCP compliant), and Epson's free TeamBoard software.  This has replaced our expensive and much-maligned hardware annotation products.  TB can be used on Mac and PC, which was a requirement for us.  Our faculty and staff chose this software over Ink2go and at least one other software-based annotation product.  The Wacom is very easy to use and is very accurate when calibrated properly, though people can be a little rough on the pens.
