All,

We are looking to repurpose a number of wall-mounted Sony PTZ cameras in lecture halls to be used for Skype and Panopto (lecture capture). Since both applications will only recognize USB video with UVC interface (webcam), we’re hoping to find a USB video capture device (most likely a “dongle”), but as yet have no joy. (All signs pointed to the Hauppauge USB-Live 2 until a call to their support line – they have excellent support – brought the news that changes to Skype have made it incompatible.)

Has anyone found a solution that enables a camera’s s-video output to be streamed via Skype or Panopto?

Thanks,

Joe,
I don't know if your cameras have composite video out but, we use a Vaddio A/V bridge to get the job done. It could be that they make a version with s-video as well. This device also addresses the audio portion of the system. Good luck

Thanks, Gary, but $1,900 seems like an awfully high price to pay!

Joe,
We went through the dongle stage and found that people were getting upset when 50% of the calls were being dropped and updates from the manufacturers weren't fixing things and new cards for the computers didn't fix it and testing and troubleshooting costs were rising and well... $1900, in the end, was pretty cheap to be able to walk away and have our sanity in tact and know we would not have angry people knocking on the door on a daily basis. We have several rooms in this configuration now, all working trouble free.

Gary, that’s exactly where we’re at now! A $59 dongle is an appealing solution until it’s broken by a Windows update, or the latest version of Skype. And, of course, it goes undetected until it’s needed. L

We tested the AV bridge for the same purpose, the video quality was very poor when using standard def cameras. We worked with Vaddio on trying firmware updates and a hardware modification, but the quality remained poor. We are looking to purchasing the Haverford Systems HuddleCams (http://conferenceroomsystems.com/product/huddlecam-hd-10x) as a inexpensive way to design small video conferencing rooms.

We’ve also got the AV Bridge in one room, plus we situationally employ a K-World usb dongle that works with SplitCam software to reliably allow us to use something other than a webcam for web based conferencing.

The AV Bridge we have is only in one room yet, and it requires us to be around when we’ve got a request for it because sometimes it needs to be “rebooted” in order to work. We thought the AV Bridge would be our “answer” going forward, but we’re having some doubts.

I’d like to take a moment to recommend the virtues of what is now the Polycom CX5000 (a.k.a., Microsoft’s “Roundtable”). While this unit is meant to be used in smaller rooms with a handful of people, it’s surprising how satisfactory the results are when we Skype or AdobeConnect with it in a larger room. It’s a chunk of change at between $3-4K, but we have no regrets from buying one about five years ago.

Joel,
We are using standard def cameras into a Crestron DMPS 300 system and are very satisfied with the quality. It is not HD but fits the budget/use criteria we were after. We are a liberal arts college with art, film and theater users and had no complaints on the quality.

Greg,
If you don't mind me asking, what is the yearly cost to run the Microsoft Roundtable through the Microsoft Lync system? Is that free with the purchase of the Polycom gear?

Hi Gary,

Your question caught me by surprise, so I double checked with one of our sys admins who says we get Lync within our campus Microsoft agreement and we don’t pay any extra either for Lync itself or to use the Roundtable with it.

By the way, the Roundtable offers Lync users (exclusively, I think) an optional panorama view of your room. It is actually pretty cool, though limited in size and therefore not super useful. The other option on the unit is called “Active Speaker”, and this is what Skype, Webex, Adobe Connect, and other users select when the device is part of one of the latter platforms’ conferencing. My new boss says this really rocks, and I have to agree. When someone talks, the Roundtable activates one of its six cameras, the one that’s pointing in the direction of the sound source, and switches as each person around the room speaks.

We have found the Vaddio AV Bridge to be a very stable and easy to use solution for both Windows and Mac OS X based computers.  It is pricey though, and I continue to be interested in more affordable USB camera options.  The Logitech Logitech ConferenceCam CC3000e is quite attractive, but it has a proprietary cable which precludes it from many fixed installations due to length. Thanks for sharing that HuddleCam HD, will be taking a look at that.

We just received one of the HD PTZ units.  We haven’t finished testing it yet, but we are looking at it for use in medium conference rooms.

I'd be very interested in hearing your experiences with that camera.

Sent from my iPhone. If there are typos, blame Siri.

Matt,

I for one would be really interested in the result of your tests.  Looking at two rooms right now where I can use this camera.  I would also like to know if anyone else has used the VDO 360. http://www.vdo360.com/

I haven’t used either the Huddlecam or vdo360 but they are interesting, and VDO360 just announced a price drop to $1150. If you don’t need the audio and other features the AV bridge adds, it looks, on the surface, like a good alternative, although a usb extender will increase the cost a bit. Who want’s to dive in first?

If I already had good cameras that met my needs I’d probably opt for the Vaddio AV Bridge because of the additional flexibility it offers. The limiting factor with USB cameras is that you’re tied to that camera. A stand-alone USB interface like the AV Bridge will let you use a variety of sources including another PC or iPad for example.

A bit off topic: I’ve tested the AV Bridge with an iPad as the input source, and it works, but I did have some trouble with audio from the iPad. The AV-Bridge doesn’t support embedded HDMI audio, and when the iPad has an HDMI connection it appears to disconnect the headphone jack, so using analog connection to the AV Bridge isn’t an option. This probably wouldn’t be a problem with a computer as the source.

So, how did the cameras work out?

The BigShot 3x was fine in every respect except for the lens field-of-view.  It needed to be much wider.  It was about 50 deg.  So we sent it back in exchange for a wide version of about 100 deg.  We haven't received the replacement, so I am not sure if it will make enough difference.
