Hi All

We are struggling with finding good, descriptive titles for a couple of positions.

I am hoping you may have some titles of people in your organization, that may be appropriate.

Position 1 - currently called AV Engineer
- project management of new installs and upgrades
- 2nd tier support for AV problems
- senior position to the AV technician
- works with logistics for AV event support
- lead on install and upgrade projects

We don't like the term, Engineer.

Position 2 - currently called AV Technician
- 1st tier support for AV problems
- junior position to the AV engineer
- hands on support during events
- basic technical work on installs and upgrades

These are exactly the position titles that we use.  Only our Engineer is really an Engineer.  Please share your results.  Thanks so much.

Best regards,

Position 1 sounds like a lot of what I do.  My title has just been changed to Instructional Technology Integration Specialist.

Hi Scott,

In our group, the first position would be a Technology Specialist or Technology Administrator.  The only difference between those two tier 2 positions is that the latter does more design work for installation projects.  My only staff with an Engineer title is my Network Engineer for our infrastructure for hosting and streaming.

Starting with the entry level, also what we would expect in so far as certification (and with that goes education)

AV Technician

Sr. AV Technician – CTS Certification

Lead AV Technician – CTS-I / D

Broadcast Engineer – CTS-I / D , Technical Training/School e.g. AMX, Extron, ITT, DeVry

Sr. Broadcast Engineer - SBE certification

Lead Broadcast Engineer

The split between the AV Techs and the Broadcast Engineers is a career shift in some aspects. The AV Techs are front line folks, they make deliveries, operate the gear and do some basic trouble shooting. As you go from Sr. to Lead you are shifting to the “managerial end of things, scheduling events and student workers although you still go out in the field as needed.

Broadcast Engineers are more background folks being involved with the design and installation end of things and that includes both the classroom/lecture  halls and the televisions studios and sports venues. They can read a set of prints and trouble shoot to the component level.

We came at this title from the television industry and more specifically with the Society of Broadcast Engineers. They are celebrating 50 years in broadcasting this year and help set the standards for the industry.
