I’m updating position descriptions for the teams that provide technology support to faculty and to campus events and that develop, manage, and maintain the technology systems in our classrooms and meeting rooms.  Rather than re-creating discrete roles for individual employees (and having to do so again a few years out), I have been encouraged to create job families (ladder positions) for encouraging and supporting staff development and having a promotion system already in place for when this happens.   I’m well into the project, and need to step back and gather some additional perspective.

If you’ve developed families, are in the process, or are just starting to think about this, I would welcome the opportunity to talk offline.  I am particularly interested in learning from other higher education service providers that have discrete teams for user services and infrastructure support and that have developed discrete families for each team.  If you’ve had two or more teams and made the choice to blend them, that story may be instructive as well.

Thank you for your consideration.
