So far, no wireless to displays, unless you count the AppleTV in my office.

Remember—the best designed, best manufactured, best installed, best maintained, and best operated wireless system is almost as good as a cable.

We are deploying some Apple TV's in rooms for a pilot program with ipads this fall. In testing we have seen some issues with HDCP handshakes and needs for reboots or switching to another HDMI source and then back to the Apple TV. I have a feeling we might be getting a lot of trouble calls. At infocom we saw the "Christie Brio" that may have some potential, although it's pretty expensive.

Ok Frank, you got me interested. The Brio is pricey, but also pretty fully
featured. And a solution that requires no software on the client makes me
purr.

We're looking at Apple TVs in limited testing, perhaps this fall.  The primary issue we see is network-related as the Apple TV's multicast traffic is very noisy.  As I understand it, this fall iOS 8 will support Wi-Fi Direct which would (presumably) allow the Apple TV to not even be on the network, so that might be a solution.  It's similar in that aspect to the Miracast devices, though those are also still new and as-yet unproven.

Looks like there are a number of new wireless(/thin client?) presentation gateway with rapidly expanding capabililities:  Christie Brio, AMX Enzo, Crestron Airmedia, Barco Clickshare, and ?  Some apparently share a common platform so maybe a lower cost, more IT friendly,  more mature solution is here … or on the way.

Chris: Wouldn’t a separate dedicated wi-fi connection to the device (Apple TV or ?) mean that the laptop/phone/tablet could not simultaneously access the internet?

Donald,

That's one of the potential issues I see with Wi-Fi Direct (at least if I understand the technology correctly), because if that's the case, it's going to be a deal breaker for many applications.

"Wouldn’t a separate dedicated wi-fi connection to the device (Apple TV or ?) mean that the laptop/phone/tablet could not simultaneously access the internet?

Precisely the problem I see. Although there are lots of occasions when a presenter doesn’t actually NEED network resources, the need is far too common for us to rely on that type of platform. They do look like handy utility belt tools for ad-hoc setups in locations where network access is limited or non-existent anyway, but for us they’d fail in our classrooms & meeting spaces.

Very helpful reviews, Mike. Thanks.

I spoke with Christie this morning. Two additional Brio units will be shipping in September. They have built-in WAPs, but he confirmed they can be disabled, which serves us well. One of our challenges is that we’re not allowed to deploy our own WAPs on the LAN, so any device that depends on built-in WiFi has very limited utility.

For us, getting the NOC involved is a given.

They go to a TV one AP-536 HDMI audio extractor and then to an EXTRON MPS-409 switcher. This slows down the HDCP handshake and increases the delay between source button push and the apperance of the image at the display. We could put them directly in to an HDMI input to the projector but the Panasonic projectors we use have only one HDMI input. Also, because the MPS- 409 does not take in combined HDMI with audio we would still need the audio extractor. We would also need to pull extra cable ffrom Rack to projector. I think if apple TV's go over well with faculty and the network admin has no issues, we would probably redesign our classroom systems on future upgrades to make things work a little better.

We have been searching for an agnostic solution.. Apple, Android, windows.

We have been trying Apple TV out and had some success, except they still don't play well with others. Also, when your IT system wants to push out updates ..yes including AppleTV. We are use the AppleTV into a Crestron DMPS-300 system that is in a comm closet and away from the user. So IR emitter controls are being used, which also messes up the updates.

Crestron Airmedia is far too much $$$ and the Network people don't like any more rouge APs than they have already.

Christie falls under the $$$ area also.

We have done tests with Chromecast, but they have some security issues and have not released the IOS solution. But I have not checked recently. If the security can be figured out, this will work for us.
