Can't fucking believe it - it broke into the Channel 10 news, then I
switched over to CNN.

As I was watching, a second explosion took place, and I thought, 'hang on a
sec, didn't a plane just go behind the building?' I thought it was emergency
services having a look around... then they said it was a SECOND plane. BBC
hasn't picked up on that yet - they still think it's an explosion from the
first plane.

Navigational stuff ups somewhere along the line sending them both into the
building - small passenger planes they reckon...

Weren't the pilots looking where they were going??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have the TV, and I can't access the website.

I guess several million people had the same idea I just did. :)

And of course the FTA TV channels aren't talking about it.

I was getting all the info from here while the TV was going so I

It was disgusting that they were talking about the stock market while

have constraints.

I agree, because that particular video showed PEOPLE. Happy, dancing,
collapsing, falling.
However, the death toll from this one is going to be a hell of a lot
higher...

Deliberate attack, Katharine. Both towers of the World Trade Centre and the
Pentagon, a military target. The US will consider this an act of war, and if
they find out which government is responsible (if there is one), they're
gonna open a whole can of woop'ass.

No, no way. They're not THAT stupid. They would know that to directly attack
the US like this would turn the whole rest of the world against them.

It would have to be the work of a splinter group or some other terrorist
organisation, but if there is a government behind it - there's gonna be
another war.

In this sort of situation, every man and his dog will come out of hiding to
either claim it or claim it on behalf of someone else, to get the other
group in all sorts of hell.

An official from that group mentioned has denied responsibility.

Bloody hell, people jumping down my throat about this... I wrote this just

One of the networks actually interviewed Tom Clancy, who is one of his
novels wrote about a terrorist that flies a 747 into the Capitol Building in
Washington.

He commented that people who are willing to throw their lives away like this
are rare, and usually religiously motivated. And while I give some Americans
their religious fervour, I'm not sure how you could put enough fanatics in
one room to cause this sort of havoc - without _someone_ finding out...

However at that level, the perpetrators are well beyond the reach of
authorities now. It's the higher levels that they want.

It wasn't just you, but it was made to look like I didn't know what I was
talking about, when in fact I posted information right at the start of the
whole thing, before any of these facts were known.

People didn't think about how much information had come to light since that
post, and thought I was just being ignorant of the facts at the time - of
course I knew it was a deliberate attack by that point!

True, I was just talking about the raw effect of the footage taken out
of context of the big picture. The wedding footage actually *showed*
people dying etc..

I was in the same position, the casualty list is going to be huge.
When you think of the events after Pearl Harbour this does not bode well
for the world.

They seem to be trying to rectify that this morning.I've seen spokesmen
from the President to the FBI trying to calm the citizens.

So you haven't seen the footage of people jumping to their deaths yet?

I'd doubt it in this case. There aren't a lot of terrorist groups
actively targeting the US with the obvious exception of Bin Laden's
followers. Isreal is a much more preferable target. Isreal doesn't have
the military power of the US and an attack on Isreal doesn't touch home
with the US as much as with the Trade Centre/Whitehouse attacks. From
what's being said, most arab terrorist groups and arab leaders are
distancing themselves from the actions, especially powerholders such as
the PLO and the Taliban. The biggest problem as I see it is that the US
has an itchy fingered president anxious to follow in daddy's footsteps.
If the US went to war with any arab nation over this incident that
country would be devastated with the US's losses primarily being
military personnel. I can see this incident esculating very easily into
war especially if Arab nations are reluctant to bring the perpetrators
to justice.

Or the plane full of passengers flying into the WTC, the people jump is
disturbing, esp shots of those 2 coming down together and those hanging out
the window, knowing they are about to die.

Just want to point (again :) out that what I said above was written right at
the start of all this before anyone knew what was going on... but damfine's
newsserver was so slow he was about an hour behind the rest of us :)

It's interesting that 'terrorism' wasn't immediately considered, they were
searching for 'accident' explanations for a while, I suppose it took a while
for the commentators to take it all in.

There's going to be a lot of retaliation unfortunately, and even more
unfortunately, on anyone people feel like lashing out at, whether or not
they have anything to do with what happened.

Rednecks with little self control who feel helpless will feel the need to
personally punish someone, and that someone will probably be an individual
who looks different to them.

What does that matter? I didn't say that these people actually DID the deed,
I just said that they would CLAIM they did, or claim that OTHERS did to get
those others in a whole world of trouble. Soon after it happened an
anonymous caller (to somewhere) said the PLO was responsible, however then
Arafat came out and declared they had nothing to do with it.

> the PLO and the Taliban. The biggest problem as I see it is that the US

No no no no no. What we have now is a totally pissed off NATION (with
exceptions) and the government's attitude is going to be a reflection of
public opinion in the US (read: opinion polls). Dubbya is only reacting to
what the public wants - which is, bluntly, vengeance.

Once again, I think this is incorrect. Any military action will, I believe,
be localised - but hard, damn hard. I'm talking lots of naval and strategic
air assets and Special Forces on the ground - UNLESS the attacks are the
work of an actual nation state. Then there had to be serious thinking, and
Dubbya isn't about to go down in history as throwing away American lives.
His Dad delivered victory in the Gulf War with "minimal" US casualties, and
Dubbya would want the same for this action.

Hmmm, my experience was a bit different... was happily tucked away
watching Captain Corelli's Mandolin as all the planes crashed. I
bumped into someone I knew outside just before midnight however - he'd
also just come out of a movie and already knew of one aircraft going
in. Either he left his mobile on or had a whole pile of messages when
he got out.

Getting into the car, the radio was already on ABC Local Radio, which
was playing CNN, so that's where we left it. It would appear going by
later reports that we tuned in just moments after the first tower
collapsed. As such, what CNN was reporting was almost completely
incoherent.

In 20 minutes of listening, all we managed to learn was that one plane
had hit one tower... it was some time before we learnt that it was
something as large and significant as a 767. I think until then we
were both thinking more along the lines of a Cessna, possibly because
we've both flown many FlightSim Cessnas into that building.

Given the sheer size of the WTC and the (relatively) not so large size
of a 767, I expressed a feeling to the friend I was dropping off that
I didn't really believe it was capable of bringing the entire building
down (and it seems that structurally speaking, that was kind of
correct - I hadn't considered the fire).

After I was moving again I looked around and found BBC World (radio)
coverage on NewsRadio and was about 500m down the road when the second
building collapsed (Again - I hadn't even realised the first had
already gone) and they ran through the full list of what had happened.
I had to pull over for a moment as the sheer enormity of the incident
sunk in.

I didn't actually see the TV coverage until I finally got home about
an hour later... was a very interesting drive home. As I came down
the hill into Wollongong, United was still "deeply concerned" about
the aircraft that turned out to be the second that hit the WTC.

In a surreal experience, I was watching The West Wing when there was a break
for a newsflash and Jim Waley announced a plane had hit the World Trade
Centre.

They went straight back to The West Wing and for a while there, I kept
waiting for a scene where a character burst into the Oval Office and
announced the attack had occured.

Then the show ended, the news started, and I saw the rest live.
