I just happily rooted a B&N Nook Glowlight, the newer model with the
high-res screen. I also have the older Nook SimpleTouch with Glowlight
that I study on regularly, but this post does _not_ concern that
wonderful device.

I have installed Ankidroid 2.2 Alpha79 on the new Nook Glowlight,
however the application crashes even before it shows the splash
screen. I do notice that according the forums at xda-developers, many
other users are having trouble with applications that refuse to run
due to the lack of an SD card. For example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52916394&postcount=399

Might the lack of an expected SD card be enough to crash Ankidroid?
What else might cause the crash? This device does not have a memory
card slot, so I've symlinked /sdcard to another directory. Is that not
enough for Ankidroid to use the space?

Thank you!

I looked at what I believe are your crash reports(such as http://ankidroid-triage.appspot.com/view_crash?crash_id=4991425435402240 ), and it references this nook-related bug here: https://code.google.com/p/ankidroid/issues/detail?id=1253

It says that a re-install is the fix, but no one's sure why it comes up.

I'm very sceptical that the device had in fact sent a crash report.
That crash report might be from my older Nook.

Tonight I'll monitor the crash-report website and try to reproduce the
issue. I'll post back with more information then.

Thank you!

date-wise it was perfect timing, though on further research it is for a nook simple touch

I would still try the clean re-install however -- I've seen it correct a lot of issues lately

Thanks. Even upon reinstall, Ankidroid exits within half a second of
trying to start it. No splash screen, nothing. There are no crash
reports in here:
http://ankidroid-triage.appspot.com/report_crashes?filter_version=2.2alpha79

Note that this is on the new Nook Glowlight, not to be confused with
the Nook Simpletouch with Glowlight (which I also have).

I'll see if I can get any older versions to load. Thank you.

I'm assuming it's not giving you any reports to send? Just checking to see if it's crashing before even set up error reporting.

Doesn't it crash the emulator too if no SD card is provided? I think I
noticed something a while ago, but I forgot to investigate.

I know you don't have to have an SD card, a literal external SD card, because I used AnkiDroid without before. Maybe this is a volatile part of the code that changes support, but I've always heard this "requirement" come up and have never seen it play out. I mainly have an SD card now, however, my nook hd+ doesn't and AnkiDroid always works for me there, so I've answered my own question.

Ankidroid v1.1.3_parallel installs and starts fine, but it only gives
this message:

"
No External Storage Available
No external storage is currently available. AnkiDroid needs to have
access to the SD card in order to read and load your Anki decks. Check
that your SD card is mounted and try again.
"

How might I work around this on a device with no physical SD card?
Note that I am not trying to use Ankidroid v.1, but rather use
Ankidroid v2 which has the same requirement.

Ankidroid 2.1 installs and starts as well.

I can see the 'New Features' screen, but as soon as I hit 'Continue'
Ankidroid crashes.

The next time that I try to start Ankidroid 2.1, it crashes
immediately without showing anything.

More information:

I have installed a terminal emulator and I can confirm that I have a
directory /sdcard. When I cd into /sdcard and then type pwd I get
/data/media. In this folder (/sdcard or /data/media) I have the
following directories:
drwx------ app_17 app_17 2014-05-30 05:30 Android
drwx------ media system 2014-05-16 19:45 B&N Downloads
drwx------ app_16 app_16 2014-05-30 05:15 AnkiDroid
drwx------ app_17 app_17 2014-06-05 18:58 Download

I cannot cd into the AnkiDroid directory, I get the message "cd: can't
cd to AnkiDroid.

What else should I check?

what I would really recommend is to step the code in debug, so that you can see the line on which is crashes

this can be harder with nook devices, but it is possible. there's a nook developer's site where I got the usb drivers for my nook hd+

it's either an issue with the code, or an issue with your glowlight that crashes the code (either way, a flaw in the code). The fact you can't cd into the AnkiDroid indicates to me a possible permissions issue

Yeah please try debugging in Eclipse, there's some instructions here:
