Hi,

since hackndev.com is down for now, I rolled out a new ISO here:

http://twilight.ponies.cz/android-x86/

I have a few questions, they're at the bottom of this document. Answers are very
welcome.

You can find the SHA1SUM in there too and in the directory libsensors-w500 the
sensors library source for Rotation vector sensor and Ambient light sensor
(still has issues). Repo diff is there (x86.diff) and so is kernel config (you
need to replace it in kernel/arch/x86/configs/android-x86_defconfig and
device/amd/brazos/brazos_defconfig after you rebase the kernel, see below).

It should have all of the necessary patches and fixed wrapped in it.
* The sensors library is there, so you can use some sensor program (I use
"Sensor List", "AndroSensor" doesn't support RVS).
* The Ambient light sensor has issues (it sends readings only when I tilt the
device as reading from it is initiated by data on the RVS filedescriptor for
some reason, needs further investigation. If anyone will fix it, I'll be happy,
otherwise you'll have to wait until I get to it).
* The RVS doesn't rotate the device screen automatically, no idea why. Again,
fixes welcome.

Kernel patches for 3.4 (you'll need to take acer-wmi.c from the mainline kernel,
rebase the android-x86 kernel on top of android/android-3.0 (as of now, 3.0.31)
and drop it in there). Then add defconfigs as needed and apply:

http://www.spinics.net/lists/platform-driver-x86/msg03345.html
http://www.spinics.net/lists/platform-driver-x86/msg03346.html

Now a few questions:
1) Can I use toolchain that's present on my system instead of the toolchain
supplied with android-x86? eg. gcc 4.7 has additional optimizations for amd
brazos.
2) Where exactly does the screen rotation decision happens? (in what file etc,
based on what kind of sensor etc.)

It seems sound isn't working with the latest build.
The power button now locks the screen without putting the device to sleep. And there seems to be no way to turn of the tablet.

I really think someone should list changes for new people that don't have a clue btw double hit the power button to shut off

Sound works for me ... try adjusting volume with the volume key?

Hi,

new ISO is here, including all patches, changes used etc:

http://twilight.ponies.cz/android-x86/

For details refer to the begining of this thread.

NEWS (the surprise):
There's only one change, demo here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_QkmqXzAfU

To enable (for some reason it's shitty), go to Settings->Display->autorotation,
tick if off, then tick it on. It should start working.

Your iso is great. Congratulations Marek. Now let us see if we can solve HD playback in youtube, the error when trying to use google voice search, the poor video players and codecs for android x86 and finally the sound driver error that happens sometimes. Here suddenly the sound goes crazy stay mute or does a strange noise like xxxxxxxx. Hope you can solve that. Thanks for sharing your great job with us

Well the ones on the market use JNI methods carrying ARM code. You'd have to get
the binary translator from intel to get them running. And even then it'd be
shitty. The other option is to -- somehow -- wrap QEMU into android's JNI
component.

> and finally the sound driver

New kernel maybe.

> Here suddenly the sound goes crazy stay mute

I noticed. It's shitty, 3.4 kernel might have it fixed, but it'll take a while
until that lands.

I was not able to boot with this one, while using my same data.img. I
tried it twice. Is there something different in this one where I need
to create a different data image?

Data image? What's that? Just write it to USB thumbdrive and boot.

Beautiful!! Thanks so much for the clock fix, glad to see things on a
steady pace upwards :) I don't know what was up with the previous
buile, I tried re-flashing it many times with no luck on booting into
it. The 06-10 release booted perfectly though, so it's all good now.

In the past releases, I have been able to take the SD folder and the
data.img, from the previous release, and just copy them into the new
releases directory, therefore, not having to re-install/re-download
everything all over again. That is what I was mentioning in my
previous post.

Good to hear it works for you now. I'm using the thing to read study materials
until plasma active lands in debian ... then I'll probably pass the builds over
to someone (or maybe talk CWH into merging this crap).

Like you I'm also waiting for plasma active. Tryed it in ubuntu 12.04 on the w500 but was quite buggy. Plasma Active 3 should be out around the end of summer. Will bring many improvements.
There are the Mer Active images that work well on atoms but noone is working on APU support in them. Maybe you should give that a try if like me you are using android just out of lack of options.

Maybe, but I'm quite busy already and I'd prefer to have installable packages in
debian.

Another interesting project for tablets was Bodhi. It had a tablet ui built on top of Enlightenment. Bodhi is built on top of debian/ubuntu. It was a very fast and quite smooth experience but it lacked proper support for our GPU and multitouch. If someone would fix the touch driver , Bluetooth and gpu it would be a great experience for the w500. Especially it uses far less resources the Plasma active.
Version 2.0 is on its way but I have serious doubts anyone tackled our specific hardware issues.

Hm, is it only a kernel issue or userland stuff? If it's kernel issue, it'll
likely get fixed along the way with other stuff, if it's userland, I'm not
touching it unless someone pays me.

I don't really know what you're asking. But then, if you want to run real
GNU/Linux system on the thing, install it onto the device. Running it on top of
android is stupid, besides there were many improvements in the recent version of
Linux kernel allowing better operation on the brazos.

Dear Marek,

For youtube HD, we could use modded youtube apk that bring HD to any
devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715

For video player we could use Moboplayer x86, but i don't know about
the codec availability (currently it use arm v6 codec which i haven't
tested)

Too bad many AMD C-60 user have problems not able to booting with this
ISO :(

Dear Friends,

I am confused about all this talk about a New ISO 2012-06-10 that is not available in www.android-x86.org/

Is it an "unofficial" version, so to speak? A version for a restricted set of devices?

Still wondering why this build will not boot on older AMD platforms,
while the Eee build is the most compatible(as far as I tested on my
hardware). Even the generic 4.0 build (from tabletsx86) is not that
compatible with my hardware (Danube platform, just the generation
before Brazos) and even some people on the Brazos platform can't use
the brazos build, cause it won't build.

What older AMD platforms? The kernel is compiled for amd brazos (C50 etc).

I see. I explicitly enabled brazos in kernel so that's it.

Well, maybe the C60 isn't supported by 3.0 kernel. Can you share the kernel log
after it "crashes" ?

Well ... you can redirect it to the serial port. Debug mode will dump it to the
screen, so dmesg > file will also work at some point where it crashes.

Hi Marek,
Any chance to include Dan / Buildroid ARM Translator patch?
Maybe without binary or proprietary stuff.

Thanks

Dear Marek,

I dunno about serial port, since my netbook didn't have any, is this
possible because specific hardware driver for Iconia Tab W500 included
in brazos.iso?
Btw may i ask you why eeepc build drain more battery than brazos build
on brazos hardware? Is there any specific optimization in brazos
build?

When it's ready ... yes. I can't redist the libs, so you'll have to drop them in
yourself anyway.

What do you mean? Boot into debug mode, something will pop up.

I'd rather think it's either missing powernow-k8 module or such

Dear electrik jesus,

> Has there been any new progress made on this build?

None, I'll give that tablet to my student as I want him to hack on ACPI0008 and
he has no such hardware.

So don't expect any builds, on the other hand, you can take over. I can explain
you how to do it.

My best suggestion is to get used to kernel stuff on your desktop computer first. Start by downloading your kernel from kernel.org, configure it manually to have it only those things needed for your desktop computer, compile it and install it.

That will be a great learning :-)

Then, go and buy a LDD3 (Linux Device Drivers, 3rd edition) and write some basic device driver.

That will help you in "adding things to a kernel", if you really need to do that. My personal feeling is that in the x86 world, you hardly have to do work on the kernel source-code level, this is much more needed in the ARM world.

Grab the stock android-x86 source, apply http://twilight.ponies.cz/android-
x86/x86.diff.gz on it.

cd kernel ; git remote add x86
https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/common.git ; git fetch x86 ; git branch
old ; git checkout -t -b new x86/android-3.0 ; git am patches from
http://twilight.ponies.cz/android-x86/android-kernel/

Drop http://twilight.ponies.cz/android-x86/libsensors-w500/ into
device/amd/brazos/ (so you have device/amd/brazos/libsensors-w500/all-those-
files/ )

cp kernel/arch/x86/configs/android-x86_defconfig
device/amd/brazos/brazos_defconfig

make iso_img TARGET_PRODUCT=amd_brazos TARGET_BUILD_VARIANT=user -j9

AND WAIT ...

Doesn't that "repo" command have some reverse process of applying diff it

Hi,

new ISO is here, including all patches, changes used etc:

http://twilight.ponies.cz/android-x86/4.2.1/

Bluetooth is broken, audio is broken, rotation works. I ran gcc with
optimization for btver1 (amd c50) instead of atom.

Which ones do you mean in particular? All kernel stuff I wrote is in upstream

The Bluetooth support , G-sensor and Ambient Light sensor. Last Kernel version I tried was 3.4 and none of the above mentioned hardware worked. Did they make it to 3.4 or are they part of newer revisions.
Too bad you lost interest in the hardware , you were the only Dev supporting it. The GPU side of things is going pretty well with the open source driver for Radeon so there aren't many snags there anymore , we got even HDMI working properly , but all the other hardware peripherals like touch , Bluetooth and sensors have been neglected. It's a nice little tablet and it's a shame it's not supported well under Linux , I had to upgrade to Windows 8 on it.

Hi Alexandru,

You said that the driver for Radeon is working properly. I have special interest in drivers for nVidia, e.g. nouveau, but the best result I got was a lazy screen. Do you have better results running android-x86 with the nouveau driver?

My video card a nVidia ION.

ALS driver is missing, the rest is there (bt -- ath3k ; touch is egalax ;
rotation is bma150 for acer)
