WUDEC---we suck, two......

Meanwhile, back at the ranch....

They moved us.

The joke all day had been "Where is the party tonight?" "The Courtyard
Marriot" "What room?"

"I DON'T KNOW......"

But they DID move us, to a suite and a CONNECTING room....and they
moved us so well, it scared me. Everything was piled EXACTLY as we had
left it...but one floor up. Spooky.

We scattered to shower and unpack. I filled ice, fixed snacks,
arranged the bar, put out props--ANYTHING to keep from chewing my
nails. I was running on nervous anticipation--Circe was here,
somewhere, due ANY minute...

Circe and I have been friends for over two years--and I mean at least
once a week, usually twice a week, and sometime daily e-buds. We had
never met, never even talked on the phone, although we've done several
three-in-the-morning ICQ sessions. She was coming to the DC eXpo, but
not arriving 'till Sarurday night. I was, unfortunatly, leaving Sunday
morning, sowe had just THIS window of oppurtunity...

The phone rang. With sweaty palm, I answered "gizCentral?" "Where ARE
you?" this slight drawl inguires. "Room 214!!!"

I hit the hall and ran screaming into the arms of The Titanium
Magnolia. We were dancing and laughing and spinning--several doors
opened along the hallway--and screaming and laughing and
bone-crunchingly hugging and laughing some more---

And THIS, my friends, was THE coolest moment of the weekend....

Nick Lea, Dean Haglund, William B Davis...I've had knee touching, arm
around shoulder, hand shaking contact with these guys--but THIS is what
WE are all about. We are the Philes. We are TOO cool. <sniff> The

Peep earrings were sacrificed in the name of Philedom. Circe hugged me
so righteously, I had Peep guts on my neck and in my hair.

The clean and refreshed Philes were coming 'round (not to be confused
with those of us still sweaty, and now wired;) We sent out for Pizza,
and gizfiz was poured all around. Joining our merry band of Philes was
Laura Burchard, Circe's friend Cookie and Shannon, The Condom
Connection. Shann had the distinction of being the Phile Who Traveled
Farthest Just To Party--Shann bypassed the eXpo altogether, and JUST
came for WUDEC. Our reputation precedes us:) I had exchanged several
e-mails with Shann in the weeks prior to DC,and asked her to provide
the condom for the Safe Peeping demonstration. She came through , if
you'll pardon the expression, quite handily... She and I did the
"slide Peeps in a rubber" vignette efficiently, despite the fact that
I had left the family of HARD Peeps at home, and we had to use SOFT
ones. I DID put my finger nail through the laytex at one point, and I
was also unnerved by the LUBE (and people do this with their
TEETH...ewwwww) . I hope someone got a good picture of this
demonstration--we may write a book......

Also on the agenda was the viewing of the videos, but since we had
already seen the night before that we could not use the television, we
had to content ourselves with merely looking at the tapes THEMSELVES.
Huh?? Easy--I held up the blooper tape and said "These are the
bloopers, first, second and third season-they are really good" and we
all laughed and cheered. Then, I held up the EPK "This is the
Electronic Press KIt--there is a REALLY cute part on here where DD
interviews his dog", and we "awwww"ed. Then, "This is the Nick
Lea/Mitch Pileggi British convention tape--they are REALLY cute on
here" and we wolf whistled and cheered. Portia had a slas
h tape that got a few catcalls, and the Lone Gunmen interviews won for
CLEANEST tape. Who need s a VCR???

We also had the viewing of the props, a travelling bunch of STUFF I've
carried with me to various Phile activities since last November's
Extreme Possibilities meeting, including the Dod Kalm trivecta, little
green men, the demise of QueeQueg gator, my "really cool keychain",and
the recent addition of the Praying Mantis epiphany. Unfortunatly, the
William B Davis special X-Files HUGE gren wall hanging never made it
out of my suitcase--but we DID have an X in the window, and police tape
on the door.....

Moving right along in the entertainment, Leigh Anne did what would be
the first of three "MadLibs" I still giggle over "Langly!! You
SLUT!!!!" Too cool.

The documentary crew arrived around 9 pm "just go on with your party,
act natural"...yeah, while you shine that klieg in my face and point
that cyclops camera at me. The presence of the documenttary crew DID
tone us down and FOCUS our conversation. Most of their questions were
leading , they tried to steer us around the show itself, plot and
direction, and fandom and OBSESSION, that WORD. I got the
uncomfortable feeling that they are going to edit the hell out of our
comments and make us look like assholes. I know I talked a LOT, but I
BET the only thing that makes the final cut will be my gushing over
Nick Lea, or my back handed slap at Duchovny's lack of participation
in fan-oriented activities. In retrospect, more than one of us regret
our loose lips. It was an interesting evening, and it remains to be
seen weather or not we will REALLY regeret it.

Once we got rid of Connie Camcorder and crew, we got into some SERIOUS
fan-speak amongst ourselves. Slowly, Philes started heading for the
sleeping quarteres, we had several departing in the early hours. I
finally SUBTLY broke up the party at 3 am by getting upand starting to
put things away and pack up. If I had not had to drive back to
Pittsburgh that day, I KNOW we could have talked all night. We bid
adieu to our now visible friends, and turned in for a few hours.

And a FEW hours indeed it turned out to be--I can NOT sleep in a
strange bed. I was wide awake by 6 am,and finally gave in and rousted
my fellow Philes by 7:30. We had a close-to-tears picture taking round
at the Pittsburgh Phile Van with Carolin and Sara by 9 am, then Leigh
Anne, Sue, Emisary and I set off for breakfast, gas-up,and the trip
home.

No flying luggage on the return trip, but Emissary had several near
heart attacks as I attempted to nap on the interstate. We kept me
awake with selections from Monty Python and Emissary's own inspired
musical collection "Songs for WUDEC DC", including such Phile
phriendly tunes as "Chantilly Lace", "Joy To The World", "She Blinded
Me With Science", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" --and
the one that made my eyes water and almost wreck the van anyway, "It
Never Rains In Southern California". What a comedian.....

The toll taker on the turnpike was surprised and delighted when I
Peeped him.

And THEN....we had

"The End"

Truly an unforgettable weekend.

I have the PRODUCER's card somewhere in this mess on my desk--I'll
let you guys know if and when there is something we can actually SEE.

>Hey Laura Cap were you in this doc. too?

I think almost everyone in the room said SOMEthing, at one point.
It will be interesting to see just WHAT makes the cut--I'm not sure
what the gist of this documentary was, did anyone get that?? Was it on
general SciFi fandom?? I know they said they had attended one other
eXpo, plus the Vancouver charity event, but this was the only time they
got to really TALK to the fans. We covered a LOT of subjects, the
show, fanfic (we tiptoed around slash, I was proud of us), real LIVES
(that's when I started to get nervous, when they went around the room
and asked "how many hours a day do you spend on line?"...like we don't
do anything else...but....)

Cookie and I discussed this and we think they were doing marketing for Fox.
It just seemed strange the way they were leading us and kept asking us what
the episode plots were about. If they were truly doing a documentary,
wouldn't they have already known that?

That question was the one that led us to believe that they'll use this
video for marketing purposes. We could be wrong, but still the whole thing
was kind of strange in restropect.

Unfortunately yes. Considering that we were neither dressed nor made up
to be stars of stage or screen, I wasn't having a good hair day, I'm
not normally your movie star quality woman and I'm not good at thinking
fast except when I'm making wisecracks or being funny...I wouldn't feel
bad if I was cut out entirely. I admire Serge for his "no consent" to
be seen on film. On the other hand, I can't even remember what we
talked about and when I do remember, I wince. The only thing I
remember saying is something I meant but didn't exactly want it gushed
around the world in living color. And they made me repeat something
too, and it scares me that I can't remember what it was because it
seemed important to them. As Giz said, I think it will be easy to
make us look bad. See if I was doing the documentary, I would have
focused (little ATXF pun, there) our piece on The X-Files and The EXPO
as the catalyst for fan friendships, especially among the on-line group
who talk to each other almost every day but had never met each other.
That was the story at the party but as Gizzie said, they wanted to make
us talk about the show and well, we do that every day here naturally.
To do it on camera seemed forced and uncomfortable.

They definitely said they were independent film makers, so I don't think
they worked for FOX. They said they had to get permission from CC and
FOX to film. I believe it is not on sci-fi fandom in general or they
wouldn't have cared about an XF episode discussion. Actually, they
could have really helped their cause by telling us their documentary
topic and then we could have stayed focused. I'm hoping it turns up on
PBS at 1 AM, "The Dark Side of XF Fandom." You know, then no one will
see me that doesn't know about my "other life."

My other guess is that it will be shown at the 1013 Christmas Party as
you know, like fan bloopers. Give them all a big laugh. ;-D

Uh-oh. That was at the end. Obviously they don't read Al's stats.
They actually stopped filming when they ran out of tape.

I don't think so since they said they would let Gizzie know when it
would be aired...of course, we're not telling the rest of you until we
"screen it" first.

The truthful answer IS no...but Laura, I have to admit that I keep
thinking about my private interview during the Expo line and
cringing...I don't remember all that I said either, and while I tried to

I can relate to this too well. Several years ago, I was involved on a
research project that started to get some media attention in South
Florida. A guy from a local PBS show called one morning to ask if he
and a camera man could join us on the boat that day. Like an idiot, I
said yes. Of course that day I was *not* looking particularly
photogenic. So they meet up with us at the dock, and he tells us to go
about our work like they're not there. We actually get used to having
them there and my assistant and I started doing our normal joking around
while doing our work. But then we realized that the guy is writing
*EVERYTHING* down in his little *notes* (thank god they weren't filming
at the time). We were then realized we had to act really professional
or else we'd look like idiots. It didn't help that he kept asking the
same questions over and over so that at least one of the takes would
come out right. (Him: "So what's in the bucket?" Us: "(For the
millionth time) it's plankton." Him: "And what's in these jars?" Us:
"It's *more* plankton (you moron!)") :-)

I never did see the show on TV (if it ever really aired), nor do I want
to. If anyone saw a really irritated marine biologist who looked like
crap talk about sea lice on "Florida Today" several years ago, um... I
deny everything. ;-)

It's easy if you didn't identify yourself by name. You say that the
person is indeeed your evil insane twin sister who was separated from
you at birth and raised by wolves. You have had no contact since she
came through the birth canal with you. Then you sniffle a little and
say, "Neither I nor my family like to discuss her. She is a painful
part of my past <little extra sniffle here - works better when men are
doing the interview>. I hope you understand." Then give them that
woe is me faraway look and then immediately refocus.

Of course if you wear the hockey jersey all bets are off. ;-D

Me, I'm sunk. I am attempting to get a new job, too. They'll say, "Who
walks on water?" and I'll know my career is over.

I average five. On my days off, I have been known to hit this
chair at 7:30 am, and stay on-line 'til 11pm, stopping just to do loads
of laundry, let the dogs out to pee, and make dinner. And if the fanfic
muse hits, I'm really doomed. I wrote "Auld Langly Syne" on New Year's
Eve, but didn't finish and post it 'till 4am, and I had to be at work
at 7am.

Obsessed??? Nah, not me.....

We didn't identify ourselves, but we DID call each other by name,
in the course of regular conversation.

I'm not really WORRIED worried about this--I quit apologizing about
my FOCUS about a year ago, when I heard two guys discusssing
basketball, and they were talking about games and players and scores
from six years ago,and no one thougth THAT was wierd. It's ACCEPTED.
Same as those that spend HOURS a week playing GOLF, for crisake (find

We believe it would be in FOX's best interest to make you an EXPO
hostess, plan and run parties. For those of you who have not met
Gizzie, the greatest thing about her is she makes you feel comfortable
immediately...and when Hotel Security catches up with her, her bunkies
in The Big House will feel the same way, I'm sure. <only kidding>
She is just like she is on-line, very friendly warm and a lot of fun.

I tell people I know how diverse our ATXF on-line group is. I think
it's hard for people to understand how people of different ages, with
different backgrounds, different levels of education and/or at different
points in their careers and lives can find common ground. This is the
story that documentary crew should have/could have explored. The thing
that people don't do when they write about fandoms/film fandoms is dwell
amongst us for a few months to get a feel for the group dynamic.
Instead they concentrate on what brings us together (in this case The
XF) and usually miss the real story.

Also, The Gatherings were different, the
> first group was wilder, the second more intellectual...

Only because we didn't have Coz, the Chicago EXPO Stud Muffin, to
distract us in DC...or at least that's what I've been told. ;-D

Coz was indeed the unexpected stud . . . um, star of the Chicago WUDEC.

Here's the thing--except for Caroline and I from Pittsburgh, and
Circe and I, and five of us that belong to a mailing list, and Donna
and Darcy--NONE of us were "friends". THAT was the point that I was

Exactly. When people start ragging me about being on the Internet, I ask them
how much time they spend in front of the TV every night. That usually shuts
them up.

Multi-Tasking.

Very rare combination of talents - not usually seen in the workplace
but often seen in the privacy of one's own home.

Rumoured to be common in females who can hold a conversation with one
