When Groening failed

I'll have to side with the "disappointed" on this show.
It seemed thrown-together, the sub-plot of Bart's karate
lessons didn't relate to anything, and the ending was
terrible. I know it was a reference to "It's A Wonderful
Life," but the irony was missing. It was more of a
rip-off than a reference. What bugged me especially
was that the earlier scene of the Flanders kids roasting
marshmallows over the cigarette lighter, singing "Put
On A Happy Face," was perfect. It was funny, and it
was just what you'd expect from the Flanders. The song
didn't need to be repeated at the end.
Also, I was disturbed by the scene in which Homer buys
up all of Flanders' stuff. Homer is a boob, he's
ignorant, and sometimes greedy in a thoughtless kind
of way, but I don't think he's cruel. I thought
that scene was very ugly, not funny in the least,
and completely out of character for Homer.
The only redeeming part of the show was Itchy & Scratchy.

In defense of Homer, I think Homer wasn't aware of the
desparate situation Flanders was in. When he said, "Oh, it's good
enough for me but not enough for you"(or something like that), it
implied that he still feared Flanders was one-upping him. Only when
he saw that Flander's was in debt did he realize his cruelty.
I feel funny saying this because I made a similar criticism
of another character in the new season of "Tiny-Toons". Believe me,
I hate it when they go out of character just to make a point(or a
joke) just as much as the next guy.
