It's a good plot tool. Especially when a series is starting out.
There are several of them: The ol' "one person does a favour in return for
another favour" bit (see "For Want of a Boot"), the ol' "will this regular
character die/go home/marry etc", the list goes on (there's a list on the
net somewhere, possibly "Jump the Shark.com")
With M*A*S*H and Hogans Heroes I guess it was obvious or predictable to have
a phony Cease fire episode. But it works for the audience.
It should also be said that the M*A*S*H one had other significance -- I
believe it coincided with a Vietnam cease fire. Can't remember.
