I saw an episode of MASH in which there were the camp was under attack,
and there were flashbacks of what life was like back at home. I would very
much like to know which episode this is. I hope you can help me. :)
This person is obviously hallucinating, right? I can't think of what
possible episode he could be thinking of. The only time we see "back home"
is in the home movies: Radar's, Henry's and Frank's. Any idea what this guy
may be thinking of?

Maybe episode "When There's A Will There's A War"? Hawkeye's at the
frontline under heavy shelling and draws up his will and there are
flashbacks of life back "home" at the 4077th.
Or maybe it's a distorted memory of "Dreams"? Apart from the appearance if
Peg Hunnicutt, there are some glimpses from the childhood worlds of Potter
and Klinger.
Oh, Nancy -
How could you, the creator of that amazing database, have forgotten about:
"A Smile, a Song and a Surprise"
| They play the lyrics in the opening credits. Radar mentions his bear's
name
| and Richard Gere informed us that his brother used to call him "Ferret
Face"
| (for obvious reasons). Then there was the big send-off for Spearchucker
and
| when Richard Gere's character was dying in post-op, his last words were
what
| B.J. stands for. For his funeral they played that song (by Mozart?)
Charles
| taught those chinese musicians.
| The episode was written by Vic Tayback and Larry Gelbart played the supply
| sergeant.
.... and it did feature that famous flashback scene in B&W.

No, that's not the episode. There's an episode where scenes of MASH in
crisis are intertwined with black-and-white footage of live in the early
'50s in the US. There's a cat playing pingpong, there's ballroom dancing,
etc. I think it is the fourth seasons' episode is called 'Deluge', but
the episode guide doesn't confirm that. Doesn't the episode start with
the line "I will go to Korea -- Dwight D. Eisenhower"?
But Mr. Gelbart is listed as one of the writers of that episode (together
with Mr. Muntner), so perhaps he can tell me whether I remember correctly.

I just watched that ep. The line is one of the first snips, yes.

I thought of Dreams, too. There was shelling going on in Dreams, wasn't
there? But the "back home" bit only marginally applies.
Yes, 'Deluge' is the one with all the b/w stock footage.
The pingpong cat was called Dagwood...

The 'stock' footage is actually Movietone Newsreel footage.
The Other Brad
You do in fact remember correctly.

And may I add, a brilliant episode.
Well done Elsig.

We lucked out. We edited so much material out of the shot footage for a script
entitled "Deluge" - which was never meant to alternate scenes at the 4077th
with newsreel stuff -- that we were minutes short of having a show to go on the
air. So we added all the black and white stuff.

Wow that's amazing. I always thought that was scene where Hawk is checking
out wounded intercut with scenes from the ballroom dance contest is one of
the most poignant of all. The sharp contrast speaks volumes. Not bad for
luck.
Luck, yes, but also an innate sense of drama, because it worked well - well,
good quotes can sometimes make the paper, as I lucked out in just that way
in my schooldays...
