At 9 o'clock, here's Trevor McDonald with the news. "Look at our
scheduling, BBC, and weep. Oh, it's a bit windy out there. And maybe
rather wet." Nicholas Owen is in a yellow mac, getting blown off his
feet on Selsey Bill. He deserves better. The trains are even more up
the spout. Frank Skinner will be late, The Nightly will be at 11:10,
and - hey - an introduction from Sir Trevor!

Ladies Night, on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

#237 Ryan Wilkinson... in and out with £16,000, not guessing at Isle of
Man.

#238 Dorothy Bramham... a guess at Finland nets £16,000... then careful
movement up to £64,000... then out, not guessing at Isle of Man.

#239 Deb Hunter... straight up to £16,000... then The Bela Lugosi
Question... he was Dracula... but it took three lifelines and eight
minutes (including an ad-break) to get there... the free shot falls out.

#240 Caroline Hughes... £4000 and three lifelines.

ITV2 repeat 10:00 tomorrow.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
October 30, 2000; Edition 113
Series 8 Episode 25

Caroline is in a *very* nice flowing navy and gold shirt. Chris is in
black. Tomorrow night, you'll be handing out protection money to kids
dressed as vampires. Or ladies dressed in black capes, I suppose.
Caroline told her husband she has £4000, and he laughed. How much is a
good divorce lawyer?

£8000: Who is the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland?
A) Jack Cunningham B) Frank Dobson
C) Alistair Darling D) Peter Mandelson
"It's Peter Mandelson."
She's sure.
D) Peter Mandelson
She's right.

£16,000: Paul McCartney wrote the theme song for which James Bond film?
A) You Only Live Twice B) For Your Eyes Only
C) Live And Let Die D) Diamonds Are Forever
Caroline huffs, and doesn't have a clue.
She'll call Steve.
Caroline has very clear diction, a bit like Lisa Simpson.
"It's Live And Let Die, 100%"
"Quite sure?"
"Yep."
"Don't want to phone a friend?"
The audience laughs.
"If it's wrong, you die and I live."
The 30 seconds expire.
Chris asks if she's auditioning Steve.
C) Live And Let Die.
Correct.

£32,000: Which animal denotes a zoo on a British road sign?
A) Lion B) Chimpanzee
C) Bear D) Elephant
Caroline flutters her eyelashes.
"Elephant. Final answer."
She's never seen any of the others on a road sign.
D) Elephant.
"You've just won £32,000. Way-hey!" And a kiss.

There's a bear on Warwickshire county signs, and a lion on any with the
royal crest. Can't think of any with a chimp.

£64,000: To which royal house did Queen Victoria belong?
A) Windsor B) Hanover
C) Stuart D) Tudor
Caroline thinks.
"It's over to the audience."
A) Windsor 25% B) Hanover 43%
C) Stuart 5% D) Tudor 27%
"We'll go 50/50."
A) Windsor 25% B) Hanover 43%
Caroline's thinking Windsor is the current house, and too modern.
Time to take a guess.
"I wish I'd studied history at school."
"Windsor."
"It's up to you."
A) Windsor
Chris recaps the question.
"25% said Windsor, 43% said Hanover, you went with Windsor.
"Find out who was right in a couple of minutes, after the break."

This is becoming a bit old, Chris.

---<ten minutes, trev to break>---

University Challenge: University of Manchester Institute of Science and
Technology takes on Balliol College, Oxford. It's a one-man show, as
Bailey from Balliol gets huge numbers of starters, and even more bonus
questions. The final score: UMIST 110, Balliol 315.

---<buy westlife: celebrity auction: wed @ 8>---

Caroline Hughes, Windsor is the wrong answer. Hanover is correct,
Victoria the final monarch, before it changed to Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

Total winnings now above £9.5 million. Break.

---<16 minutes, that part>---

Remember That Half Million Question? About Amy Johnson and her plane,
called Jason. Reports in a local paper suggest that Amy named the plane
after her family's fish shop, named in turn after the Greek hero who
chased after the Golden Fleece. Jokes about the Green Ranger will go
over the head of anyone over 25.

He's going for it.
"Fish."
"Why the change?"
"Thinking of a fossil, a fossil of a fish, something like the ich- bit.
That vague enough for ya?"
"No."
"I'm gonna go with it. If I drop to £32,000, that's a fortune."
C) Fish
Chris smiles.
"If you had stuck with your initial instinct and gone with reptiles..."
Chris sounds concerned.
"...you would have lost £32,000."
The audience explodes. The cheque goes into the shirt pocket. Chris
knows how to build tension.

£250,000: Which building is known by the address "No 1, London."

Dan will take the money.

If he had stuck with Clarence House, if he'd been a bit braver, he
