The million dollar question took five minutes to answer. Mike isn't going
to spend as much time agonized with this one, though. He's taking his $500K
check--and a berth in the Millionaire Tourament of Champions on May 21, 23,
and 24--and going home. BTW, here are the top 8 American series winners:

$1,000,000 -- John Carpenter, Dan Blonsky, Joe Trela
$500,000 -- Michael Shutterly, David Fite, Rob Coughlin, Stephanie Girardi,
Mike Menz

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?
Thursday, April 27, 2000

PREVIOUSLY ON MILLIONAIRE:

The previous two contestants were on to something. Both took guesses at the
questions they passed on - and both guessed correctly! Maybe they might be
handy in picking out a million dollar winner... for the Kentucky Derby next
Saturday!

A Diamond Dozen... a Lucky 13 Clubber.... and perhaps a Fabulous 14 Clubber
next? We'll see what Scott Bickerstaff can do next on:

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?

Scott works at a summer camp, and he's going to do their version of
Millionaire. Perhaps JW Justice will give him a few pointers. Asks Scott,
"What would you do to speed contestants up?" Regis: "Good question. Patience."

When we last left off:
At $2000, 9 away, 4 more locks in $32K, all 3 LifeLines left.

If you want to play Enhanced TV, you must have Shockwave 4 installed.

Back to the game for $4000:
In what US state are counties known as parishes?
A. Louisiana B. Alabama C. New Hampshire D. Alaska

Let's see if the Audience knows this...

80-11-3-6

I think they're trying to tell him something!

So we go with A...

... and he has $4000.

For $8000: In Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" how many of the

dwarfs' names end in "-y"?

A. 4 B. 6 C. 7 D. 5

Scott and Regis help count off the dwarfs' names, and Regis "keeps score."
Regis: "How old am I doing this?"

He counts out to himself the names of each of the dwarfs and their names...
all of a sudden, "The name of the Smurfs keep popping into my head," says
Scott. Regis: "No Smurfs allowed here! We don't want those stupid Smurfs!"

By the time he's finished, Regis is holding up all five fingers on his right
hand and two on his left. "Looks like 5, Regis. I'm going to say (D) 5."

"Final answer?"

"Final, yes."

....

... and he has $8000. Good work!

Amy tells us something that happened in the wedding. "He fainted, Regis."
Regis: Is there a doctor in the house?

For $16,000:
From 1993 to 1995, who co-anchored the CBS Evening News?
A. Diane Sawyer B. Barbara Walters C. Connie Chung D. Lesley Stahl

He remembers Connie Chung....

.... and he's got $16,000.

For $32,000:
What group was the primary organizer of the 1995 Million Man March on
Washington, DC?
A. Nation of Islam B. Promise Keepers
C. Rainbow Coalition D. Christian Coalition

Kinda timely considering that this Sunday is the Millennium March on
Washington. (And ironic, too, considering that the WWF is holding a PPV later
that evening!)

Scott calls Uncle Dave for his Phone-a-Friend...

... he says Nation of Islam, 80% certainty. He's sure of Nation of Islam.

So he goes with his uncle...

... and locks in THIRTY-TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!

For $64,000:
In "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" what NFL team's mascot is kidnapped right
right before the Super Bowl?
He knows it. D - Miami Dolphins. He knows it.
See, he's right! He has SIXTY-FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS!

With the money, he'll pay off his loans, get his wife a new car, buy a new
house for the pet hamster, go to Disney World... House for the pet hamster?

For $125,000:
What form of transportation would you be using if you were on a caravel?
A. Double-decker bus B. Ship C. Camel D. Airplane

Let's knock out two wrong answers: A. Double-decker bus B. Ship

Looks like he's going to keep the money - he still has $64,000!
The correct answer is B. Who knew?

FASTEST FINGER FIRST: (Or shall we call it the Dextrous Digital Dash?)
Put these people knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the order of THEIR BIRTH,
EARLIEST first.
A. Sean Connery B. Alfred Hitchcock
C. Laurence Olivier D. Paul McCartney

I betcha we're going to get only one or two on this one...

Correct answer: B-C-A-D
Winner/Time (of 3): Mike Menz, 4.10 seconds!

Mike Menz is from Greeneville, TN, and an orthopedic surgeon. His brother is
an attorney, and his parents are here, and very prolific, with 12 children!

For $100:
If your are in trouble with our spouse, you are said to be in the what?
C - Doghouse. Not ferret farm.

For $200:
In the song that celebrates a hero, you sing "For he's a jolly good" what?

For $300: What is the sincerest form of flattery?
B - Imitation.

For $500: What is the traditional title for a respected musical conductor,
composer, or teacher?
B - Maestro.

For $1000: Reflexology deals primarily with the manipulation of what body part
to promote healing?
A. Back B. Head C. Throat D. Feet

For $2000: In baseball, what player is replaced with designated hitter in the
batting line-up?
A - Pitcher.

For $16,000: Which is NOT a characteristic of the Quaker on the Quaker Oats
cereal packages?
D - Glasses.

For $32,000: Which of Henry VIII's wives was the mother of Queen Elizabeth I?
A. Anne Boleyn B. Anne of Cleves C. Catherine of Aragon D. Jane Seymour

He says Anne Boleyn. He locks it in...

... and he has ....

THIRTY-TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!

For $64,000: Which film is NOT based on a famous stage production?
A. Agnes of God B. Driving Miss Daisy C. Terms of Endearment D. Evita

He blurts out that it's either B or C. But he uses the 50/50 anyway. Guess
which two it leaves.

We'll PAF, his sister-in-law Nina.

Terms of Endearment is her answer...

... as is Mike's...

... and ...

... she gave him the right answer!

For $125,000: James Meredith was the first African-American to attend waht
southern university?

A. U of Alabama B. U of South Carolina
C. U of Georgia D. U of Mississippi

He is going to risk half on Mississippi.

He has $64,000.

He could have walked away.

Mississippi...

THE RIGHT ANSWER!

He has ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS!

Now, for $250,000:
What is known for traded under the buttonwood tree in old New York?
A. Stocks B. Buttons C. Livestock D. Diamonds

He's sure it's A.

He locks it in.

The question says "*IS* known".

Had he said D, he would have lost.
Had he said B, he would have lost.

He said A...

... and ....

HE'S IN THE LUCKY 13 CLUB!

Fabulous 14 Club for $500,000:
What is the Middle Eastern area known as the Rub' al-Khali?
A. Rugged mountains B. Vast desert C. Grassy valley D. Fertile delta

He is going to put $218,000 on B.

He does it. He locks it in.

Well. He HAD $250,000.

He has a LOT of money on this question.

And... well...

He'll have a LOT more money to risk....

Even if he DID go to Atlantic City and put his money on Red on the wheel and
it did come up red.

He had $250,000...

AND HE NOW HAS HALF A MILLION!

For the NINTH time anywhere, for ONE MILLION DOLLARS:
Which of the following pieces of currency was the FIRST to use the motto "In

The way I remember the dwarfs' names is the Snow White episode of the Brady
Bunch.....Greg was Doc, Peter, Sneezy; Bobby, Bashful; Marcia, Sleepy; Jan,
Happy; and Cindy, Grumpy. All the kids wanted to play Dopey, who was played by
Sam the butcher. Take away Bashful and Doc, and that leaves five Y's :)

>Well. He HAD $250,000.

>AND HE NOW HAS HALF A MILLION!

That is being too risky (and very lucky!)

Also, it seems to me like the message of Today's Episode is to take risks and
gamble. I wonder how many people headed for a casino after this show and the
message it brought.

Personally, I would risk the $32,000 on a 50% guess on a $125,000 Question; but
I would NEVER risk blowing $218,000 on a $500,000 Question (or $468,000 on a
$1,000,000 Question). Also, I HAVE seen contestants blow $218,000 on wrong
guesses, so I still don't recommend taking risks.

But, the show does get more exciting when the contestants risk big money on
guesses. And it is a matter of different personalities: To risk or not to risk.

One $2000 question spoiler....

>For $2000: In baseball, what player is replaced with designated hitter in the

>A - Pitcher.

Hmm. I'd thought that this wasn't the case, in that the DH certainly usually
replaces the pitcher in the lineup, oh, 99.99% of the times, but that the
manager did have the option of saying that the DH replaced, say, the shortstop
if the pitcher was actually able to hit (Babe Ruth anyone? Although the
Babe was certainly long before the DH).

But checking the rules as found in the third edition of Total Baseball,
this isn't the case. The first clause says that "a hitter may be designated
to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequent pitchers...". While a
few other clauses about subbing the DH into the defense would seem to cause
some confusion about this, the final clause simplifies things by stating
that "Once a DH assumes a defensive position this move shall terminate the
DH role for the remainder of the game", so there is no DH at that point and
while there are situations where both a pitcher and the player who started
as a DH may bat in the same game, anytime such occurs there actually is no
longer a DH in the game. So the question/answer is completely correct.

So how exactly does the 50/50 work? The rules are very vague. When the
show first started, I expected the 50/50 to randomly remove two of the
wrong answers (after all, Regis asks the computer to do this), but the
choices that we often see left seem much more calculated. Does anyone
know if the 50/50 choices are determined in advance or chosen just when
the lifeline is used -- the above sort of suggests that because the player
blurted out B or C, that there was a greater chance that those would be
the 2 choices left. If the 50/50 was chosen randomly, and I had narrowed
it down to 2 possibilities, then using the 50/50 has a good chance of
eliminating one of those two.

50/50 are chosen in advance tothe question even being asked. They chose
of course the right answer, and then the "best wrong answer" as the
other to keep. This is mentioned in the UK Behind the Scenes book.

The only thing I find more fun that watching "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?"
is actually _playing_ the game with fellow players via ABC's Enhanced TV Link.
Some added comments to Jeremy Soria's summary of the show last Thursday night
(which he posted to a.t.g.s. right after the show ended).

«««If you want to play Enhanced TV, you must have Shockwave 4 installed.
»»»

[Yes, I had it!]

«««For $8000: In Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" how many of the

dwarfs' names end in "-y"?

A. 4 B. 6 C. 7 D. 5

»»»

After getting the first question right for 5000 points (4000 plus a 1000
"speed bonus"), I initially chose "B" as my answer — but changed it to "D"
(which is allowed in the on-line game) after Scott got to "Bashful" (who, along
with "Doc", were the two that didn't have names ending in "y"). That cost me
the "speed bonus", but I still got the 8000. Total up to now: 13,000, and I'm
on my way to a million!

«««With the money, he'll pay off his loans, get his wife a new car, buy a new

house for the pet hamster, go to Disney World... House for the pet hamster?

»»»

And maybe a dictionary for the Enhanced TV people — an on-screen graphic
that showed up on my computer monitor during the show said he'd buy a house for
his "pet hampster"!

«««For $125,000:

What form of transportation would you be using if you were on a caravel?
A. Double-decker bus B. Ship C. Camel D. Airplane

Let's knock out two wrong answers: A. Double-decker bus B. Ship

Looks like he's going to keep the money - he still has $64,000!
The correct answer is B. Who knew?

»»»

I KNEW! (Great to get those high-valued questions right and run up those
points in the on-line game!)

«««FASTEST FINGER FIRST: (Or shall we call it the Dextrous Digital Dash?)
»»»

In the on-line version, it's the "Speedy Gonzalez Round" — fastest mouse
gets the highest score if your answers are correct.

«««Put these people knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in the order of THEIR BIRTH,

EARLIEST first.
A. Sean Connery B. Alfred Hitchcock
C. Laurence Olivier D. Paul McCartney

Correct answer: B-C-A-D
»»»

I thought it was the order they were _knighted_ by the Queen, starting with
the earliest — but I got it right for 50,000 points plus the speed bonus! (It
still took me over 12 seconds, though — but that's not really comparable to the
button-pushing the FF players in the studio get to do.)

«««For $1000: Reflexology deals primarily with the manipulation of what body

part
to promote healing?
A. Back B. Head C. Throat D. Feet

Let's ATA: 24-3-7-66

D - Feet. He has $1000.

»»»

And I had 1000 points after changing from answer "A". Thanks, audience!

«««For $16,000: Which is NOT a characteristic of the Quaker on the Quaker Oats
cereal packages?

D - Glasses.
»»»

On my computer monitor screen while I was playing, the message area of the
screen went black while they were asking this question except for the words,
"Sorry, we can't show you the Quaker..." Then, when the correct answer was
revealed, up popped the Quaker (with his smile, long hair, and hat, but no
glasses), accompanied by the words, "...but we can now!" (What a gag!)

«««For the NINTH time anywhere, for ONE MILLION DOLLARS:

Which of the following pieces of currency was the FIRST to use the motto "In
God We Trust"?
A. Nickel B. One dollar bill C. Two-cent piece D. Five dollar bill

»»»

The two-cent piece was the correct answer here, and I missed it (I thought
it was the nickel, since I did know that "In God We Trust" did not appear on
