Greetings everyone!

At long last, www.botcon.com received a much needed facelift! We've
added some new content that should prove most interesting over the next year
or so, but more imminently, the dates and location of BotCon 2002 have been
decided and revealed!

Let us know what you think and prepare yourselves! Let the ride begin again!

Well, that certainly made me happy. Fort Wayne has been my favorite site
for BC out of all the ones I've been to (each since 98). Very convenient
location, nice convention center and hotel, decent little town, lots of
places to eat nearby (unlike Durham, unless you had a car). I wouldn't
complain if Fort Wayne was the place BC was held every year from now on.

Can't say the location is much of a suprise.

Well, so much for all my hopes...

At least it's only 8 hours away.

Yes, yes- yahooo!!! I was hoping it'd be Ft. Wayne again- really works well

Right now in Ft. Wayne, the few citizens who walk the streets are being
overcome by an unnaturally chilly gust of wind and darkening clouds
overhead. They hug their children close to them and scurry for safety. An

And it is 12 hours away from me. I am just happy I don't need to fly,
still nervous about air travel. Now I can got with a bunch of freinds
like I did the two previous years. Not to mention renting a van for
the trip with a bunch of people is very conveinent, cause it makes
halling stuff back and forth a bit more easier.

I am very happy with the location. The facilities for BC 2000 were
great, and there are lots of food places nearby.

again!

Well, I have a couple of thoughts on this...

I really like Fort Wayne. I understand the reasons for selecting it
repeatedly, given the fact that it is the back-up location. The facilities
are great, the city is decent, and I have fond memories of it from 2000. I
will probably attend again.

Otoh, I use Botcon as a vacation for my wife and I. As I can only afford 1
vacation a year, It is rather irritating to go to Indiana again after just
one year of not doing so.

Looking at the map on the Botcon site, there is a rather marked disparity of
east versus west. As I come from the northwest, I was hoping that since all
but 1 had been in middle to eastern locales, that this year it would be a
bit closer, or in the south. Maybe Denver, or Dallas, or someplace in New
Mexico, Arizona, or California!

Obviously, there are factors I have no idea about, such as how many fans
come from the east, etc. Perhaps there would be more attendance from people
in the west if it were closer to us. In fact, the 1998 Botcon drew the
largest percentage of non-preregistrants to the show. This helps to
increase the Fandom, as shown by the pre-registrant attendance jump of
64% -after- the California show. There would certainly be more diversity
among dealers if it were on the west coast, as Japanese dealers could get a
direct flight that is 4 hours shorter for them, not including any layovers.
Seems like this would be a good idea, as the Japanese stuff is the most
sought after. Also, there is more Japanese stuff on the west coast in
general, as that is the common point of entry for imports from the orient.

As a dealer I would like to have the opportunity the Eastern dealers do to
drive the product myself instead of shipping a vanload of goods back and
forth across the country. The last two years, shpping my product cost me
more than the whole rest of my show registration, meals, and hotel stay
combined (and I buy two of each toy, 2 dealer tables, and 1 of everything
else!.) I have two vehicles able to carry the amount of stuff I bring, but
it isn't affordable to drive more than 1,000 miles with either of them, nor
is it worth the time. Not to mention the fact that I could save on airfare,
etc... as most eastern dealers do by driving their product.

If there will never again be a Botcon held in a western state, perhaps a
split is in order, a Botcon East and a Botcon West. This creates problems,
and solves some too. Yes, it dilutes each show a bit, But there are many
who would attend both of them. Each show would be smaller logistically,
therefore easier to manage. There would be fewer guests at each one, due to
the cost of obtaining guests versus attendance numbers. But the exclusive
could be the same, plus it could be split into two orders for logistical
purposes, packaging, etc...

Please note that this is not bitching about it "not being in my town." I
think the reasons I've given are valid. As I have said before, I'd be
curious to know how many attendees are from the western states versus
eastern... perhaps a percentage thing. It just seems kinda unfair, that's
all.

That thought had occurred to me, and I'm glad to hear someone else say it.

In terms of US population alone, more people live toward the East Coast;
therefore, the farther west BC moves, the less central it is (generally
speaking). But people tend to forget that we Americans on the West _do_
have somebody to _our_ west, as well. It's a looooong way west, but
it's there all the same, and who can say what effect a
four-hours-shorter flight would have on Japanese dealer attendance?

> If there will never again be a Botcon held in a western state, perhaps a
> split is in order, a Botcon East and a Botcon West.

I'm not sure I'd go for that.

If I were to attend a BC, it would be mainly to meet all you freaks, so
see just who exactly I've been wasting my online life with. And there's
already going to be a fair amount of absence anyway, as people have
other obligations or lack of motivation or money or whatever that keeps
them from joining the party. Splitting the remaining ATTers up into two
groups would probably be enough to discourage _me_ from going. [sound
of the Hallits scrambling to create said schism]

Plus.... I don't think it would feel as "real" if there were another BC
somewhere else in the country. (Especially since _every_ BC has been
"BC East," so ours would probably feel like a knockoff.) Anyway, is
this fandom really big enough to support both simultaneously?

> Please note that this is not bitching about it "not being in my town."

I'm kinda bitching about that, but I'm ripping off your rationales and
using them as a skimpy, tattered loincloth over my thoughtlessly
self-centered naughty bits.

Well, on the bright side to those in the fine state of Washington, there's
always CybCon 2002. :)

Sure, there won't be any big-name guests, but there will likely be a bunch
of cool guys hanging out.

And then there's the CybCon 2002 exclusive toy. Let's just say BM/G1
Scavenger was just the beginning! ;)

They went with the Botcon Beyond look, and personally I like it. I also
like how they merged the sites. Very nice job, indeed.

Not just 4 hours, but no plane transfer... ie: less potential for lost
luggage.

Since there's been no Japanese Botcon for a couple years... it should be
worth considering for that reason alone.

Not to mention all the Aussies, Hawaians, Koreans and others fartehr west
who could probably travel a bit cheaper by just flying direct to the west
coast.

The true freaks would go to both of them.

All except for one of them...

so ours would probably feel like a knockoff.) Anyway, is
> this fandom really big enough to support both simultaneously?

Look at the attendance numbers for the past Botcons. If you consider that
the precentage of non-preregistrants was the highest at the 98 show when the
TF fandon was just ramping up, consider what it would be now! Transformers
is nowhere near the apex as far as fandom goes, and a west coast "official"
Botcon would rock the house. I would suspect that all previous attendance
numbers would be shattered. If it were me, I'd place them near opposite
ends of the summer, with one in late June, and one in late August. Plus I'd
make sure a few unique gueasts would be at each one. That way, the insane
people would have more incentive to attend both of them.

A primary reason why the non-preregistrant attendance was higher is that
California already has numerous and sundry tourist attractions drawing
people from around the US and the world. A Transfamily could plan an entire
vacation with Botcon as its centerpiece. Plus, Westerners are more likely to
drive a fair distance to see something, as they do it all the time. We have
no turnpikes and/or other travel nuisances stopping us from moving the vast
distances in our states. So I'd be far more likely to drive to Arizona,
Colorado, or Wyoming, than to drive much farther than that, particularly to
be someplace I've already been to once. Frankly, FW isn't that great,
certainly not worth a 3 day drive (with hotel stays, 2 days dead-heading.)

Heaven forbid they hold it in Vegas, where the airlines were offering
incentives to travel there BEFORE the terrorist attacks. I'll be damned if
you can't find something to do in Vegas, home of the $2 steak dinner, and
topless jousting! (well, maybe not both together...)

>

Hell, I live in Oregon. Portland would be a great town for the show, but I
know it'll never -ever- come here. I'd be fully willing to drive 1000 or so
miles to go to BC. There are numerous accounts of BC road trips on the net,
but the most I've ever gotten to talk aout was the lack of cohesive compass
point labeling in Durham (South was really East), and insane hick drivers
crossing the centerline in Ft. Wayne. At this point, I'd -drive- to
Minneapolis St. Paul, rather than fly the unfriendly skies. I suspect that
the recent events had a part in the decision. Ft. Wayne is central/eastern,
so that -perhaps- a larger number of people could attend by driving instead
of flying. It sucks to be me, and everyone else west of the rockies.

Placing BC in Detroit or Chicago would have this same effect, as there are
many airlines that fly over the arctic circle from Japan to these cities.
I know many people have said that despite the lack of events, BC 96 in
Chicago had some of the best selections and prices for Japanese stuff.

Curse you! Someday, you and I *will* be at the same BotCon, and on that
day, the world shall tremble.

Only 7 for me. Best part is, Monday Aug 5 is a holiday in Ontario, so I
have a long weekend. Hmmm, Chicago's only 4 hours out...

The day I get my balls back, I s'pose...

The pattern: When Hooks has a girlfriend, Hooks does not attend Botcons. Hooks
was SINGLE in '98. Not so every following year.

I need to cut this damn chain around my neck...

Personally, I attribute that more to both the general US fandom not having
"caught up" with what all was available overseas, and the Japanese dealers
not having quite "caught up" with the rising prices and interest in TFs in
general. And most of that selection w/ excellent price WAS at the one
"table" (where I did most of my shopping that year)...

I mean, '97 boasted a LOT more tables with Japanese TFs, but prices had also
jumped considerably. And the fandom was larger and much more AWARE of what
existed o'er there.

All I have to say is...FUCKIN' A!

I was intending to not go to BotCon, 'cause I'm falling out of this
Transformers thing, but now that I know it's in Fort Wayne, a 2-2 1/2
hour drive from here, you can COUNT on me being there.

Mmmm...toys, booze, midwestern cigarettes and fireworks.

God bless Indiana.
