We've had enough gay fanfic stories, thank you. Whatever
happened to good old-fashioned heterosexual stories? How about Dax
banging Quark? Or Worf ramming Yar?
I waited over a week and there was only one heterosexual story
and it was a repost. MORE HETEROSEXUAL EROTICA PLEASE!

Who the hell died and made you Q? If you want het stuff go find it in the
archive or write *polite* encouraging letters to the people whose stories
you've liked. Coming on the newsgroup and making blank rude demands is not
going to win you any brownie points.

Yeah this is a flame, and I should be adult and above all that, but sometimes
it gets to be a little too much, ya know? If someone wants to tell me what I
can and can't write, they can bloody well hire me. As long as I do it for
love, I'll write what I want to, which happens to be queer TrekSmut.

Well, I do for one, and not just because I'm a slash writer! I presume
you mean the comments and not your reply.

I enjoy reading het stories just as much as I do slash, as long as they
are as well written.

I have a few het ideas at the moment as it happens, so as soon as I
finish them, they will be posted.

To quote Emma, in this case she was correct, "People are gonna write what
they want to write." So just because some of us want to write slash, we
will. Have you ever heard of the right to free speech? I believe it's
even in your Constitution if I recall correctly.

And I also find the idea of Dax and Quark together rather offensive,
thank you very much!

characterized by pre-apocalyptic-release beta-testing of hellfire and
brimstone, a strange ringing in the ears, often confused with the voice of
God (or The Public Mandate), and an overpowering urge to sound the final

Gawd, what the hell is the problem here lately? You think everyone just
crawled out from under a rock or something. We just had a thread like
this, except I think it was about the lack of "General" stories on this
newsgroup. And look where that got us - into a huge debate about the
validity of NC-17 on this newsgroup or even on Star Trek as a whole.
But, before I probably start this all up again, can I just point out the
fact that I am sick and tired of having people critise what the topics I
choose to write on? First it was no NC-17, now it's no Slash...what, do
we all live in a Vanilla world where no one has any sex and there are no
relationships beyond het ones? Did I miss this memo somewhere along the
line? From the sounds of it, people would rather see this newsgroup
die from lack of use than have "creative" stories from all sections
posted here.

You want to see more het fiction, then write it. At least
you are better than the one who started the less NC-17 debate, you've
actually written something. So now why don't you use that talent and figure
out a better way to vocalize your complaints instead of pissing off
the legions of slash/smut and homosexual writers out here.

Like Ruth who wrote a wonderful comment to this before me, I'm pissed
off - and I don't even focus on writing slash. And I also think that the
tone of this message is exactly what you deserve. I found this note
offensive and insulting and, being as sick as I am of having people tell
me what the hell I should be writing for this newsgroup, you're just
lucky the tone isn't even worse.

Free to write whatever I please...

I get rather tired of people saying "enough this kind of story" or
"enough that kind of story, we have too many."

If you want to see less of a particular kind of story, tough. That's what
your killfile or your skip button is for. People write for their
pleasure, not your approval.

If you want to see more of a particular kind of story, mention your
enthusiasm for that kind of story *without* denigrating others (ie, say
you would like to read more stories about weird aliens cultures *without*
saying "every other story here is a romance, what happened to the weird
aliens", or saying you would like to read more het without saying "we
have too many gay stories.") Or, write some your own damn self. I've seen
you post stories here so it's not like you don't write.

Common courtesy, people. No one should *ever* censor their personal
creative vision for the sake of others, but we all respond to people who
are enthusiastic about the kind of story we want to write. So if you
don't like a genre of story, skip it, and if you want to see more of
something, politely ask or write it yourself or both.

If you want to read about Dax banging
Quark or Worf ramming Yar, why don't
you write a story about it? Asking other
people to change their writing preference
to match your own fantasies isn't very
effective, because it *ain't* going to
happen. Contacting a fanfic writer whose
work you enjoy, or asking the ASC
community in general if they've considered
writing a particular scenario might be a
bit more productive and less offensive
than your post. Fanfic writers write
about what *they* like to read. They
aren't sitting there going, "Gee, I wonder
what tom_paris would like to read? I
think I'll write a story about that!"

Speaking for myself, I enjoy nearly all
the stories, slash *or* het-fic, and I
want to thank all the posters recently
for their contributions to fighting the
SPAM. Keep up the good work! :-)

Yes, there is. This is it. Star Trek fan fiction of all varieties
welcome here. You don't like it, fine. Don't try to deprive the rest
of us. No one's holding you down and making you read it, unless you're
a LOT kinkier than you'd have us all believe. ("Oooh, spank me baby!
And while you're at it, make me read some of that homo Trek smut!")

Get one of those plastic film keyboard covers, I once spilled cola on
mine and it was hell to clean. Better yet, just don't read the stuff
you don't like. Check out the codes in the ASC FAQ if you're not sure
what all those confusing letter/letter pairings mean.

So do I, but posts like yours still need to be addressed -- alas!!

> 4. Enough with the gay stories already!

You can just keep scrolling through the list and NOT READ THEM!! (Jeez,
is this concept THAT fucking difficult??)

Great. I'm swearing and it's barely 7 AM. Most unpleasant.

Personally, I write stuff that is almost exclusively heterosexual -- an
odd choice, perhaps, since I've been in a monogamous relationship with
another woman for nine years now. (Got to work those nasty heterosexual
fantasies out of my system SOME way! :D) But right now I'm tempted to
go write VOYAGER slash (truly frightening, as I consider VOYAGER as my
Wednesday night penance that occasionally affords a bit of guilty
pleasure). The thing is, the Internet is a big, messy place, full of
all sorts of things that I like, and things that I don't like. "Wading
through garbage" is part of the job description. If you go onto the
'net and forget to wear your rubbers (you may take that any way you
like), then you just don't get it.

Or, as the good constable would say, "Harumph!"

You know people like this are useful. Just when I am thinking, 'well things
aren't so bad,' because the (almost entirely straight) people are giving me
(almost entirely queer) a wedding shower, some jerk likethis comes along and
reminds me that people still hate people like me.

I logged onto ASC tonight only to be carried from my seat and into a
terrifying alternative universe of paranoia, prejudice and bitching, by
an immense tidal wave of deja vu...

As someone's already said, have we not HAD this argument already, in all
its manifold permutations? And were the following conclusions not
(implicitly at least) drawn:

1. No-one has the right to tell anyone else what to write.
2. Everyone has the right to post whatever manner of story they please.
3. If you don't like it, don't read it, and don't flame the authors or
the readers who do like it.

I'm aware that several thousand years of philosophical debate concerning
the background issues have exercised the minds of some of our greatest
thinkers, however, personally I would rather not see them repeated on
this newsgroup. Not again, any way.

I personaly find it very insulting that you find it nessicary to call my

Ms. Gifford:

I admit my feelings on the subject are a little, shall we say ambivalent?

Still, I have not found any way to tell hets from gays (and I admit I had
other words in mind), and I generally do not ask. Nobody has ever told me
either. There are rumors about a certain family member that I have chosen
not to inquire too deeply into.

The crux of my complaint is that there SEEMS to be nothing BUT gay stories
on what is supposed to be a general newsgroup.

Or seemed to at the time. I have come across other material since I posted
my response to this thread.

Hate you, Ms. Gifford? I don't know you. I will probably forget your
lifestyle choice the moment I log off this group. We may meet face to face

hate you. There's enough hate in the world already.

George was stating that he did not like gay stories. He did NOT say that
he didn't like gays, just gay stories.

And honestly Ruth, we could care less about your personal life, your
wedding, your sexual orientation, or your Pilgrim's Progress through
bondage. These topics are NOT of interest to people who read this group.
We are here for Star Trek stories. We are here to talk about Star Trek.
Please note for future reference that a reader does NOT need to know
personal details about an author in order to appreciate their stories. In
some cases, the less known, the better.

Discussion of personal matters, including weddings, belongs in private
email and there are other newsgroups more appropriate for debating gay
rights. This is supposed to be a STAR TREK group and Star Trek has
nothing to do with gay rights or wedding showers.

would dare write, "I'm tired of all these het'ro posts?" If they did that
they would get eaten alive. What rudeness! Sorry to rain on your parade,
but as has been so carefully marked, IT'S ALL IN THE HEADER. So frankly,
Scarlett, I don't give a damn about your opinions. That was just a rude
thing to say, and it deserved a snappy response from Ruth.

And Ruth would have to be more restrained than anyone else if she were not
to perceive such a statement as homophobic. Christ's sake, sounds too much
like "why can't you do that stuff in private?" and "Love the sinner, hate
the sin." It's unnecessary for her to shut up, especially since I see that
all the time the only people who get yelled at for dragging their life
into discussions are people who have queer lifestyles. DOUBLE STANDARD!

Keep on talking, Ruth, I applaud you and I didn't even notice you weren't
welcome.

ps. and frankly, the writing on this site is abfab, straight and queer,
erotic and not. Keep it ALL up people, I read it all.

But Ruth's and Atara's wedding *is* a Star Trek matter. If I understand
her posts correctly, they *met* on ASCE, and ASCE is part of ASC, isn't
it?

Please tell me whoever said this wasn't serious? Or that they weren't
just telling Ruth to keep her life quiet. Gawd...if I thought people
were closed minded before, they seem to be even more close minded now...
Actually to be perfectly honest, I DO find little tidbits about the
authors who write my fav stories interesting. Gives us a little look
into the creation of a story. Secondly, I think it is appropriate for
this newsgroup. We're making a statment about how insensitive you and
other people's BROAD, BIASED statements really are. Ruth's happened to
be a little more personal in nature, that's all...

>Discussion of personal matters, including weddings, belongs in private

Actually, this is a Star Trek CREATIVE group, dedicated to writing,
posting and discussion of creative works. Therefore, if Ruth wants
to discuss how Star Trek writings and her personal life are similar...
more power to her. (And Ruth...I'm sorry if I just totally put your
words WAY out of context...it wasn't intentional but was just my spin on
what you wrote...) I think I'm going to stop talking now, even though
I have more I would like to say...just because I don't think it's my
battle and I don't think I really have a right to say anymore.

So my apologies to Ruth, but to let you know...you go girl! You are most
definately welcome here...

Aside from this should have been posted on alt.startrek.creative.erotica,
LuvDS9 does have a point -- there is a dearth of hetero fiction on here.

I'll make a challenge to all my fellow writers (I'm on asce), if you
usually write m/m, or f/f, write a m/f for a change.

My current project is a f/f, but the next one I'll do is a m/f... Anyone
else up to the challenge?

Actually, I usually write m/f, when I write smut at all; for me the
challenge would be an f/f. Not because f/f disgusts me or something-- I'm
bi, so in RL f/f interests me quite a bit mroe than m/m, which I cannot
participate in-- but there are no interesting female characters who have
chemistry with one another in Trek.

Just wanted to second everything Susannah said, since she said it so
much better than I was going to. After 18 months on this group, I
consider many people here to be "long distance friends" and I care
about their lives. There's always room for a little sharing.

um, nope, sorry! LuvDS9 wrote in response to Greywolf's cheeky commentary
about a Klingon/Targ story, that she was looking forward to the

long-awaited and ultra-kinky Quark/Worf/tribble sex triangle. ;)

And LuvDS9 loves ALL fanfic, TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY (with a preference for DS9,
gee, why??) and reads and loves slash, het, smut, parody, and genfic.
Please don't put words in LuvDS9's mouth. Thanks! :) And IDIC.

I've explained my reasons for jumping to that conclusion in another post, but
think about it this way: suppose it happened (this is unlikely but bear with
me) that asc was suddenly flooded with stories (smut or not) about Ben Sisko
and/or Geordi LaForge (pause . . . you're way ahead of me aren't you?). Now
what if someone wanted to read about different characters, but instead of
asking nicely, they said "enough with the stories about black guys already!"
and went on to explain that stories about black people made them sick. I can
think of at least one person out here (although I don't claim to speak for
her) who would probably take serious offense at that. In fact *I* would take
serious offense at that and I glow in the freakin' dark. But it's OK to talk
about gays like that?

>And honestly Ruth, we could care less about your personal life, your
>wedding, your sexual orientation, or your Pilgrim's Progress through
>bondage.

So why *do* I talk about my sex life on asc? Well, we were talking about D/S
in regards to Killa's story. Some of the people who objected seemed to be
missing some of the concepts that go along with the lifestyle. I happen to
know about those concepts because I live that lifestyle. What should I have
done, just come out and said "it's this way and this way only" without
explaining that it's actually this way for myself and atara and that's why I
claim to know what I'm talking about? I *was* the person who said that the
discussion was getting rather adult and suggested that we put a warning on
it.

>These topics are NOT of interest to people who read this group.

Which readers do you speak for? At a guess, I'd say you're speaking for
yourself here. Funny, that's what I was doing in the big bdsm debate; I
didn't claim to speak for all of the readers of that story, or even the other
leatherfolk on this list, I simply spoke for myself. And why? To avoid
making broad sweeping statements like the one above. *This* reader (me) *is*
interested in personal details about the writers. Why? Well, asc is lucky
to have a bunch of diverse, talented, individuals who contribute on a regular
basis. The all have some interesting things to say. Why don't you go out and
slam Greywolf for the bits we see of his personality (a Wiccan furvert?
Cool!). Should I not be interested in the fact that Robin Lawrie just had a
baby? Why not, she's a contributing member of the community. Are you going
to slam her if she mentions it again? What about Macedon? He's said (on
more than one occasion) that one of the reasons he writes some of the stories
he writes is his dissatisfaction with the way TPTB handle Chakotay's
character. All well and good, but should we care that Macedon is Native
American? Yes we should, because we should also assume that he knows whereof
he writes, and maybe even understand his irritation with TPTB. So if you're
slamming me, you should be slamming Greywolf, Robin, and Macedon. You should
slamming Shannara (who got personal in explaining why Killa's story bugged
her) and Ellen (who got personal in explaining why Killa's story made sense
to her). You should be slamming Alara (who explained why she has problems
with bdsm, and has outed herself on the list as being bi). In fact do we
care about Alara's job and her travel arrangments? Well we should because
she's mentioned them while explaining her convoluted archiving methods

>Discussion of personal matters, including weddings, belongs in private
>email and there are other newsgroups more appropriate for debating gay

Now this is one of the reasons I waited a while to answer this post. The
other is that I was mad enough and hurt enough that a cooling off period
seemed like a good idea. But mainly, I thought, "gee, *I* think of asc/asce
in a certain way, but what others don't agree with me? I could be wrong
here.' So I waited to see what people thought. And what happened merely
backed up that feeling I have about asc/asce. The Trek fan fiction community
is just that, a community. Many of us are interested in the people we meet
here, the writers, the readers (the readers who are writers), the posters and
so on. In the NC-17 debate, I likened asc/asce to a bookstore. And the more
I think about it, the more I like the analogy. It's a local bookstore like
the new/used bookstore/hippie café I fell in love with when I was a kid. We
hang out here and we write and read. We talk about our stories and sometimes
about the issues those stories bring up. We gossip a little about the lives
that take place outside bookstore, and some of us care about each other. I'm
not the only person to have found *love* in the 'net Trek fan fic community
(Hi! You know who you are!), and I'm not the only person to have found
friends here. But you know what? When you go into Earthling Books (in Santa
Barbara CA) no one forces you to take part In the community. No one tells
you that you *have* to join the discussion. If you want to cruise asc/asce
and just pick up stories and leave, go right ahead, we won't stop you. But
if you want to sit down and talk about Trek fic, know that it's important to
the writers and readers and that we see and/or put ourselves into it. It may
get personal at times, but that's how some people are.

From here on in, you are talking through your hat, sirrah. It is
obvious to me that either you are fairly new here, or you have been
ignoring the majority of personal interactions among us. Insufficient
data at the moment to decide which.

>Discussion of personal matters, including weddings, belongs in private

It does in *this* group, bub! None of which, mind you, obliges *you*
to care -- but it does mean ye have no right to presume to speak for
the rest of us, many of whom most vehemently disagree with you and
your cohorts.
If you do not find a post interesting, hit delete and go on to
the next post. That's why they put that damned key on our keyboards,
you know. This newsgroup is and has been for quite some time a
community. If you do not like it, fine -- but you cannot tell the
rest of us what to do. And if you do, we shall quite properly ignore
you, and if you keep it up, we shall laugh our asses off at you.

Greywolf the Wanderer, wondering how many more of these are hiding in
the woodwork. Damn it, I thought we sprayed for this, guys -- I want
our money back!
